CHEW #1 BITES ITS WAY INTO A SELL OUT

The cannibalistic crime thriller, CHEW, sells out with a second printing on the way!

CHEW, the all-new crime series with a cannibalistic twist from writer John Layman and illustrator Rob Guillory, debuted to a near immediate distribution-level sell out despite a significant overprint, resulting in a second printing.

"I've been insisting for years that the comic book industry has been clamoring for more books with double page spreads of non-costumed characters eating soup, and it's gratifying to see there indeed is a robust market for such a book," Layman said. "Big thanks to everybody --retailers, readers and reviewers-- who came out in such shocking numbers to check out something new and different, and more than a little bit weird. Rob Guillory's amazing art certainly played a big part in attracting people's attention, so I want to thank him for his great work as well."

CHEW's star, Detective Tony Chu, is a cop with a secret. As a Cibopath, Detective Chu gets a psychic impression from whatever he eats. While it means he's a hell of a Detective if he can stomach the evidence, once his secret gets out the government makes plans for him, whether he likes it or not. CHEW blends horror, mystery and the strangest ability of them all in an ongoing series of horrific crimes solved in the most horrific way possible. Since its release the book has been receiving an immense amount of buzz with many retailers directly contacting Image for as many copies as they can spare. Even Layman's fellow creators have been talking up the book.

CASANOVA and Uncanny X-Men Writer Matt Fraction commented, "Of all the times John Layman has made me want to throw up, this was the best. CHEW is disturbed and disturbing and warped and grotesque and hilarious and horrifying-- in short, exactly the kind of book we were all afraid John Layman had hiding inside of him somewhere. Now when they find the bodies, we can all hold up copies of CHEW and say SEE? WE TOLD YOU THIS WAS COMING. Oh, and Rob Gullory is going to helllllllllll."

CHEW #1 2nd Printing (APR098373) and CHEW #2 (MAY090346), both thirty-two page full color comic books for $2.99, will be in stores July 1st, 2009.

Adam' Adventures: Batman & Robin #1 (DC Comics) Review by Adam P.

For Batman’s 70th anniversary, this is what readers get?

Take a piece of paper and photocopy it. Then take the resulting photocopy and use that to produce yet another copy. Repeat this process enough times and you'll end up with a blotchy and unintelligible document. That's what Batman & Robin #1 feels like.

Writer Grant Morrison has produced something that manages to combine different elements of the Batman mythos in the worst possible way. It has extremely unrealistic comic book elements with attempts at horrific seriousness—for example, oscillating between half-serious amphibian villains and disgusting scenes of torture. Quitely’s artwork is very wispy and although this conveys a certain realism, it makes the book seem limp and weak, a far cry from the strong lines of Mark Bagley or Ed McGuinness.

For a comic that is clearly meant to have major sales (there’s a special 1 in 250 variant and lots of promotion), the entire concept of a new Batman and Robin is never clearly explained for readers who have no foreknowledge of current goings-on in the Batman Family. The book would have benefited from a few introductory paragraphs before the tale begins.

One of my major dislikes of this book is the new Robin. He is a total pest—an arrogant child who is the most irritating character I’ve had the misfortune of meeting in a long, long time. Although I didn’t grieve the death of Jason Todd, I would be even less mournful if the Joker were to terminate Damian Wayne—the kid is an absolute nightmare. He’s what my dad used to call “a snot-nosed brat”.

The only thing I appreciated about the book was the honest exchanges between Dick Grayson and Alfred where we see the new Batman earnestly expressing how his greatest fear had been realized—having to don the cowl in place of Bruce Wayne.

This issue seems like a custom-made dream team gone awry. On paper it seems attractive. Someone, somewhere, surely didn’t have any trouble pitching the idea. However, the issue is an example of the whole being much less than the sum of its parts. Sorry folks, but I prefer my Batman to be a campy Adam West or Frank Miller’s broody Dark Knight… but not both at the same time!

6/10

BRAND NEW SERIES LAUNCH INCLUDES 5000 FREE COMICS

BERSERKER #1 KICKS OFF WITH JUNE’S “LET US WIN YOU OVER” PROMOTION

Publisher unveils 25 participating retailers for month of June

Top Cow Productions, Inc. revealed today the names of the participating retailers in their “Let Us Win YOU Over” initiative for June and the next free issue in the program – Berserker #1.

The “Let Us Win YOU Over” initiative is a yearlong campaign by Top Cow Productions to give out free copies of its regular comics to potential fans in the U.S. and Canada through participating comic book stores. Each month, a different set of stores, each month a different free comic. The stores vary by geography and demographics. Top Cow has partnered with ComicsPRO to bring this promotion to fans and a portion of June’s retailers are members of ComicsPRO. Top Cow reminds retailers that any direct market retailer with a Diamond account is eligible to participate and should contact their Diamond Customer Service representative for information on signing up.

Berserker #1 is a brutal new series, co-produced with DiVide Pictures, offers a blend of Norse mythology with contemporary characters. The story focuses on an American war veteran and a high school athlete coming to grip with the animalistic and uncontrollable rage living inside them. Berserker #1 is written by screenwriter and creator Rick Loverd and drawn by artist Jeremy Haun (Battle for the Cowl: Arkham Asylum). Series artist Haun and artist Dale Keown (The Darkness/Pitt) will provide illustrations to the two cover variants featured on Berserker #1. The issue will be in comic shops on Wednesday, June 24th, 2009 and normally retails for $2.99.
“We're incredibly proud of the work Rick and Jeremy have done on Berserker #1 and excited that Top Cow believes in the series enough to give out free copies to retailers and fans,” said Milo Ventimiglia, star of NBC’s Heroes and co-founder of DiVide Pictures.

“We are very much looking forward to the being a "Let Us Win You Over" store. Not very many promotions come along where we can give away free comics and when they do we try our hardest to take advantage of them to help both the publisher and ourselves,” explained Mike Cresser of Crush Comics in Castro Valley, CA, “We are hoping to increase our sales on Top Cow titles due to this and very much appreciate the effort being put forward by Top Cow.“

A list of the participating retailers during the month of June (listed alphabetically by state) is included below. Additional information can be found at the official online home of the “Let Us Win YOU Over” initiative – www.topcow.com/freecomics. Customers who currently purchase Berserker at the stores below will be able to purchase an extremely limited “All Beef” Edition (limited to just the stores listed below) at the regular cover price. Fans are encouraged to contact the retailer they wish to visit for specific details:

IDW Releases ComicMix's GrimJack: The Manx Cat

First series to be published under exclusive agreement

DW Publishing is pleased to announce the upcoming launch of the first series of ComicMix.com properties, GrimJack: The Manx Cat. For the first time in print, fans can now enjoy the adventures of GrimJack in 26 full color pages published straight from the online comic. Writer John Ostrander and artist Timothy Truman skillfully return to the grim and gritty interdimensional land of Cynosure, in which gun-for-hire GrimJack holds court in the fabled Munden's Bar.

"We're excited to be bring some of the best ComicMix properties to real-world books, and GrimJack is a great way to start," said Greg Goldstein, chief operating officer of IDW. "The new books are a great new way to enjoy ComicMix fans to enjoy their favorite comics, and expose the properties to new fans."

GrimJack debuted in the mid-80s and rapidly became one of First Comics' best-selling titles. Created by Ostrander and Truman, the series was revived in 2005 for the graphic novel Killer Instinct, published by IDW, which is also home to the trade paperback reprints of the First Comics' material.

"It's sort of a homecoming for us," GrimJack and ComicMix editor-in-chief Mike Gold notes. "We've had a long and productive relationship with IDW - absolutely the best I've had in my career. There's no better choice to restart at the place we took off initially, with a brand-new GrimJack mini-series."

GrimJack: The Manx Cat #1 will be available in stores in August. Diamond order code JUN09 0951

5 Quick Questions With Francis Manapul

Francis Manapul is the acclaimed artist of DC's new series Adventure Comics. He has also illustrated Superman/Batman, The Legion of Super-Heroes, Tomb Raider, and Witchblade, as well as a French graphic album Sept Guierrieres for Editions Delcourt.

Francis was born in Manila, Philippines and grew up in Toronto, Canada. Fueled by the comics he read as a child (Superman in particular), it was his discovery of Jim Lee's early work that inspired him to pursue a career in comics. Other influences include Marc Silvestri, Darwyn Cooke, Michael Turner, Tim Sale, Eduardo Risso, Enrico Marini and Massimiliano Frezzato.

Today he's enjoying his ride with Geoff Johns on Adventure Comics, and is continuously trying to improve his skills...at poker. He also enjoys an In-n-Out burger—or two or three.

He agreed to answer 5 Quick Questions

1) What would you say is your greatest achievement in comics?

There's still a LOT that I want to accomplish so this question will sorta remain unanswered. I'm not even sure if I can answer this 20 years from now as goals always change and the list gets longer. I will say though that I'm most proud of the fact that I was able to break in and make a career out of it.

2) Who was your favorite writer or artist that you worked with & why?

At the moment, I'm really enjoying working with Geoff Johns. He really took the time to listen to the kind of story I like to tell and the how. When I read the script to the first issue of Adventure Comics #1 it really felt like it was written for me. He really captured the type of aesthetic that I like and it just felt natural from the start. I've also enjoyed working with David Wohl on Witchblade he really taught me a lot, I just feel bad for him having to work with me at such an inexperienced stage of my career. I also enjoyed my collaboration with Joshua Ortega on Necromancer, he's one of the most unique minds I've met, and never a boring moment! And of course I can't forget about my constant collaborator, Brian Buccellato, we've worked together for years now and I think he's probably the only colorist that could stand all my notes. Our work together on Adventures is a real learning experience since we're both "changing" it up, so it's experiencing some growing pains but that's cause we're always aiming to hit it out of the stadium rather than base hits. And I think we're starting to do that now.

3) What character you have never worked .., would you like to do & why?

I checked off 3 major ones within the past 6 months which is fantastic, that being Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. Others that I've enjoyed reading as a kid and would love to draw are the Flash, Wolverine and of course Spider-Man. I'd really love to take a longer crack at Batman, and Superman those two characters really dominated my childhood.

4) Who are your influences?

Jim Lee was a huge influence on me wanting to get into the field of comics along with the rest of the Image explosion with the likes of Marc Silvestri, Rob Liefeld and Whilce Portacio. They were making some very exciting comics and before them comics felt sort of bland. Then out of no where these guys just came in and turned it on it's head. It was a very exciting time in comics visually. They really got me excited over comics. I also am very inspired by numerous international artists like Enrico Marini, Frezzato, Toppi. Currently I'm really enjoying the work of Darwyn Cooke, Tim Sale, Leinil Yu and way too many to list. I just love the art of comics and I buy a lotta books mostly for the art. I like art that inspires me, not so much influence. I think early on when I was younger I was very influenced by what I looked at, but now that I'm older and have a better idea of who I am and what I want to be, I just appreciate art that inspires me to get better.

5) What hero or villain would you like to change if you could and why?

hmm.. this is gonna sound totally self serving..but I'd have to say Superboy. Not so much changing the character but more exploring him and bringing him to a wider audience. Geoff believes that Superboy is right up there as one of the greater characters at DC and I'm totally with him. Hopefully after it's all said and done we'll have accomplished something that would bring a wider spotlight on the character. Because it's just too cool to not be in said spotlight. That we'd like to try and change.

Colorada Springs Gazette reminds you watch out for DDP's Obama comics

They aren't the first, but the Colorado Springs Gazette is certainly the latest newspaper to take notice of Barack Obama's conquest of comics, dropping a note into their story that should remind everyone to watch their store shelves later this month for DDP's two new Obama titles:

"This month from Devil's Due Publishing, there's 'Barack The Barbarian: Quest for the Treasure of Stimuli' and an alien-fighting Obama in the sci-fi title 'Drafted: One Hundred Days.'"

Reviews form a Noob: The Muppet Show Comic Book #1-3 review by Lisa L.

I grew up in the 80s which, of course, means I grew up with reruns of The Muppet Show. The whole family used to sit down to watch. My folks would giggle over stuff we didn't get and we laughed out loud at things that made my folks smile. It was the epitome of family TV, a little something for everyone wrapped up in a fuzzy slapstick ribbon. And when I watch the DVD releases now, I smile at the simple jokes and roar at the ones that went over my head as a 5 year old.

So I was pretty keen when BOOM! Kids' new series The Muppet Show Comic Book landed in my lap. The 4-part series, written and illustrated by Roger Langridge, brings back the familiar faces and skits of the show. The comic is issued monthly, with issue one having been released in March.

The format of the comic matches the format of the show, minus the theme song. Langridge uses some of the same skits from the show as breaks in the ongoing story of each comic. Like the show there's no ties to the main story from one book to the next but there is a series theme, "The Story of...", with issue one focusing on Kermit, two on Fozzie, and three on Gonzo. (Anyone want to run a pool on issue four? My bet is Rowlf.) The stories aren't "origin stories", just the main character in the story that issue. Skits that make an appearance are Pigs in Space (in all 3 so far), Muppet Labs, Veterinarian's Hospital, and the Swedish Chef. And, of course, every one's favourite critics, Statler and Waldorf. The stories are all very kid-friendly, with happy resolutions and little lessons. Kermit gets news about the old swamp and feels homesick but realizes he'll always carry a part of the swamp with him. Fozzie hits a comedy roadblock and after trying to reinvent his act realizes he was always funniest when being himself. And after everyone tries to figure out just what Gonzo is, he reminds us (in a subtle way) it's not what you are but who you are that's important.

Now, as a longtime Muppet fan (and fan of Jim Henson in general), I have to say for me the show didn't translate so well to print. Slapstick really is a live action comedy genre, although kids may be able to get it better than me. Another thing I couldn't get into was the characters had facial expressions. And gestures. And legs. That they walked on. Okay, yes, they had things like that in the TV show as well, but in illustrated format the motions are more Muppet Babies than Muppet Show. Again, this just could be my 30-something brain screaming "But it's NOT the SAME!!", and a kid will have no issues with it. Although one skit just didn't translate at all, and that was the Swedish Chef. His humour really lies in being able to hear him speak, reading it just didn't work. Well, maybe to a kid it would.

Okay, so, that said, if you grew up watching the Muppets, and loved them, get this for your kids, nieces, nephews, or grand kids to introduce them to the Muppets and comics in general. It's fun and light and a great way to encourage kids to read. And it's a nice way to give them more than the DVD seasons of The Muppet Show. But if you're looking to drum up a little nostalgia? Stick with the DVDs.

“Smallville: The Complete Eighth Season” Collectible Multi-Disc Set On DVD And Blu-Ray™ Hi-Def Available August 25, 2009 From Warner Home Video

Another season of “Smallville” means more exciting new characters, adventure and conflict, as the longest running “Superman” TV series continues to deliver great entertainment with the release of “Smallville: The Complete Eighth Season” on DVD and Blu-ray™ on August 25th.

Fans will thrill to this collectible multi-disc set with all 22 episodes of the eighth season, plus amazing bonus features, including unaired scenes, cast & crew commentaries, and several never-before-seen featurettes including “Smallville’s Doomsday: The Making of a Monster.” The six-disc DVD set is priced at $59.98 SRP, and the four-disc Blu-ray set is priced at $79.98 SRP; both have an order due date of July 21, 2009.

In Season Eight – starring Tom Welling, Allison Mack, Erica Durance, Aaron Ashmore, Cassidy Freeman, Sam Witwer and Justin Hartley – there’s a new reporter at the Daily Planet: Clark Kent, who shares a workspace with Lois Lane. There’s a new hero in Metropolis, too. No one knows who he is. But Jimmy Olsen was on the scene of one of the do-gooder’s exploits, and he snapped a blurred photo of the hero in superspeed action – a hero everyone now calls the Red-Blue Blur.

Red-jacketed, blue-shirted Clark Kent draws closer to his Superman destiny, and another Kryptonian destiny also takes shape as Davis Bloome begins to realize he is Doomsday. His mission on Earth: kill Clark Kent. So many new events (Will Jimmy and Chloe’s marriage last?), so many new faces (Tess Mercer, Saturn Girl and Cosmic Boy among them!), so many state-of-the-art effects – so don’t miss a single thrill-packed moment!

“‘Smallville’ is the longest running live-action ’Superman‘ TV series, a testament to its popularity and loyal fan base,” said Rosemary Markson, WHV Vice President, TV and Special Interest Marketing. “This is one of the most memorable shows on TV and a must-have on DVD. As with prior seasons, ‘Smallville: The Complete Eighth Season’ is timed for release just in time for the Season Nine premiere of the series on The CW.”

“Smallville” was developed for television by Alfred Gough & Miles Millar, and is based on DC Comics characters. The executive producers for Season Eight are Kelly Souders & Brian Peterson, Todd Slavkin & Darren Swimmer, James Marshall, Mike Tollin, Brian Robbins and Joe Davola. “Superman” was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. The series is from Tollin/Robbins Productions and Warner Bros. Television. Beginning this fall, “Smallville” will air Fridays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW Television Network.

DEAD@17 creator Josh Howard celebrates his acclaimed horror series' move to Image Comics in a big way with a World Premiere party for DEAD@17: AFTERBIRTH at Lone Star Comics in Southwest Arlington on Saturday, June 13th!

"Launching DEAD@17: AFTERBIRTH at Lone Star Comics feels right as they've been supporters of mine since I started," Howard said. "The mini-series acts as a new beginning for the series, yet also ties in together threads long time fans have been following for a long time. Nara's new role in The Zodiac is going to really shake things up and bring out some more skeletons from the series' closet."

DEAD@17: AFTERBIRTH catches fans up with Nara Kilday, the demonslayer recently resurrected to become an agent of the covert ops force, The Zodiac. Her new role sets up an all-new stage for the series as she attempts to safe guard her best friend, who may be key to the upcoming apocalypse. During Lone Star's World Premiere, Howard will be signing and doing free sketches for fans who purchase DEAD@17: AFTERBIRTH #1, the latest Dead@17 series and the first to be published by Image Comics, or DEAD@17: ULTIMATE EDITION collection, which collects all four previous series. The event begins at 5 PM with food and drink made available throughout the night.

DEAD @ 17: AFTERBIRTH #1 (APR090331), a 32-page full color comic book for $2.99, will be in-stores June 17th, 2009. Lone Star Comics is located at 4001 W. Green Oaks Suite 153, Arlington, TX 76016.
