I.M.O. Review: Booster Gold #21 (DC Comics) By Eddie R

Holy unofficial time travel crossovers Batman!

For a couple of weeks now I have been asking myself the following question: If Booster Gold knows Batman’s dead, why can’t he just go back in time and stop it? I mean is Bruce, and in fact the whole Batman Family, THAT much of a keystone in the DCU?? If you remove one, or try to alter something attached to them, the whole universe falls apart? Well after reading the beginning of this four part “Day of Death” story arc, it looks like we are going to find this out, and many more answers to some of the burning questions surrounding the “death” of The Batman.

Booster Gold#21 opens with a 3- page action sequence of Rip Hunter trying to break into Vanishing Point. Once inside, Rip is confronted by a voice, telling him he is basically a fraud, and will be found out very soon. Apparently this villain has been trying to discover Dr. Hunter’s true identity, but since Rip has hidden it so well, the only way this villain can go after him is via people who know his secret. One of those people is Booster. The other is Batman.

Summoning Booster to the Time lab, Rip makes Booster realize how the pictures Batman had of him trying to save Barbara Gordon from The Joker, which are still in the Batcave, pose a very big security threat. Therefore, Booster must go and get those pictures back in order to protect the mission.

Once at the Batcave, it doesn’t take long for Booster to break in and try to steal the photos back, but this only puts him face to face with the new inheritor of the Cowl: Dick Grayson, whom Booster guesses his secret identity in about 30 seconds. As Booster explains to Dick why he is in the cave, out of nowhere appears the mystery villain, who manages to alter the time line just enough so Booster will have to travel back into the past, and save the mantle of the Bat. So the adventure begins........

Well it seemed this week in the DCU was all about Dick Grayson, and him taking up his role as the new Batman. I have to say, depending on which writer and artist got their hands on Mr. Grayson wearing the cowl, some of this week’s bat offerings were either a joy to read or a chore. And I am glad mine turned out to be the first of the two.

I.M.O. Review: The Flash: Rebirth #3 (DC Comics) By Eddie R.

Sideswiped.

I like it when a story can throw me off now and then. I mean, after all the reading I do for my reviews, eventually things become blurred. Everything starts sounding and looking the same. You start seeing patterns. And just when you think you got everything figured out, out of left field (or possibly a corn field), comes something totally unexpected. This is what makes a good story great, and this one is only half way done.

The Flash: Rebirth#3 gives us a bit of foreshadowing of what’s to come within the first 5 panels of the issue, during which a fight takes place between an unknown assailant and Abra Kadabra. I like how the use of both words and visual aids allows the reader to read between the lines. There’s a reason why the Flash puppet gets burned. Question is by who and why?

As we read further into the issue, we see the heroes of the DCU working together to remove the black aura from Barry. The device they are building is like a lightning rod, which is suppose to extract the black aura from Barry’s body, but at the same time leave him essentially grounded and powerless. What happens next will be shocking to some, and feel like déjà vu to others. One of the major revelations I will tell you about is we finally get to see inside of the Speed Force. Well it’s not as much as what the interior of the Speed Force is like, but WHO is in there...

Now, I know the major talk about this issue will be the revealing of the mastermind behind all of this chaos. I am not going to go and ruin the surprise for anyone, but I will say the last time we saw this villain was in the "Return of Barry Allen" Storyline in The Flash (Vol.2) #74-79. Before that, he tried to replace Barry as the Flash, using his knowledge of past history in order to ruin Barry’s life. Now I know some of you out there will feel that this is a cop out, but don’t. As anyone who has read the Flash over the years knows, time travel is a tricky business, so all of this is plausible.

Now after reading this issue, my only question is this: Just whose charred remains are those in that field?

5 Quick Questions with ChrisCross

ChrisCross (born Christopher Williams) is a comic book illustrator, known mostly for his stints pencilling Milestone Comics' Blood Syndicate and Heroes also Marvel Comics' Captain Marvel and Slingers.

Williams attended New York City's School of Visual Arts in the early 1990s. While doing so, he caught his big break doing work for the DC Comics imprint, Milestone Comics, which sought to publish a line of comics aimed at attracting a more multicultural audience.

He has also worked on other series such as Firestorm and The Outsiders for DC comics. He is currently working on a series of hardcover graphic novels for a France-based company named Humanoids Publishing and has returned to the States to continue American comics, starting on Midnighter #11.

He has also been hired to do illustrations and storyboards for commercials and magazines.

ChrisCross agreed to answer 5 Quick Questions

1) What would you say is your greatest achievement in comics?

Getting in there and staying there and being relevant. I'm the deluded type. I never thought about how hard it would take to get in. i just made my mind up that if i wanted something i had to make myself good enough to get it. I still haven't changed that kind of thought process. Believing that God would make a way didn't hurt either. Heck, i don't think i'm slowing down either.

2) Who was your favorite writer or artist that you worked with & why?

Now that's kind of hard to say. Joe Casey thinks like i do. But i've worked with Peter David, Christopher Priest and Keith Giffen.... Ivan Velez back in the day... i worked the longest with Peter. They all have something to offer in their own ways and the reason we all made memorable projects is because we pushed each other, for the most part. Joe Casey is kicking my behind all over the place. More than Christopher Priest did. But i don't mind. I figure they know that i can handle anything they throw at me. It's kind of like getting the PS3 for the first time. WIth a Sony Bravia 52 incher. IF they make that size. :D

3) What character you have never worked .., would you like to do & why?

I've never worked on Fantastic Four. I would like to see what i could do with that book. Nor have i drawn Captain America or SHAZAM!! I would love to draw those for obvious reasons.. that being i grew up reading those books and it would be great to have a footprint in those books. Spider-man would be another book. You can do a lot of great animated action with him. NO one moves like Spidey.

4) Who are your influences?

Too many too mention. Let's just say most of old Marvel, a lot of anime and manga artists.... Usually anyone that i see has a great knack for doing a particular thing that helps me figure out something that i'm have difficulty with. Then i add it to the fold.

5) What hero or villain would you like to change if you could and why?

Believe it or not, a villain. Crusher Creel would be a cool character. I think there's a lot you could learn from him. He's seen a lot and probably one of the few characters that has battled Thor and Hulk and... heck, the AVENGERS, and came out smelling like a rose... so to speak.

I say Crusher. Mostly cuz i love the name. :D

Friday the 13th Jason Voorhees Statue

Jason Voorhees Statue a Cut Above

Because he stabs people. Get it?

This really swell Friday the 13th Jason Voorhees Statue features everything you want in a horror statue, including a disgusting-looking bed, an old teddy bear, and of course, Jason Voorhees. There's a decaying wooden floor, a bloody machete, and a whole laundry list of amazing details. What's particularly neat about it is that it depicts the slasher star in a quiet moment, rather than in mid-slash. We love it, and you will too… if you pre-order, that is.

Friday the 13th Jason Voorhees Statue
Description:

* Sweet dreams Freddy!
* Even coldblooded killers need a rest!
* Time to reflect with Jason Voorhees!

With over 300 kills to his credit, it's no wonder that the guy needs to sit down and take a break for a minute. Seen here in an outtake from the Freddy vs. Jason feature film; Jason sits atop his old childhood bed and reflects on…well simpler days. Note the sinister Freddy Krueger glove and trademark Fedora in the piece! A fantastic companion to Gentle Giant's previous Nightmare on Elm St. statue (sold separately). This piece is hand painted and cast in durable a poly-stone material. Another strictly limited edition just in time for Halloween. Includes matching hand numbered certificate of authenticity.

IDW Releases The Veil #1

New series from El Torres and Gabriel Hernandez

Blurring the line between the living and the dead, IDW is proud to launch a new comic series from writer El Torres (Zombies!: Eclipse of the Undead) and artist Gabriel Hernandez (Clive Barker’s The Thief of Always).

The Veil, with the first issue available in stores today, chronicles Chris Luna, a private eye whose clients are all dead. Unable to make a living, she is forced to move back to Maine and confront the darkness lurking in her sleepy hometown.
“Gabriel showed us what he could do when he illustrated The Thief of Always, and it’s great to have him once again put his ability to convey otherworldly concepts to good use on The Veil,” said Chris Ryall IDW’s Publisher/Editor-in-Chief. “Between his artistry and the great story telling of El Torres, we are very enthusiastic about The Veil.”
In the four-issue series, El Torres sets a truly eerie scene of ghosts wandering the streets of Crooksville, Maine and of residents slowly being driven insane by a supernatural force. Hernandez masterfully illustrates each nuance, including a malevolent presence known only as the Slug Man who threatens to rip the veil between the living and the dead.
In addition to covers by Hernandez, each issue will also feature a cover by award-winning designer/artist Ashley Wood.
“It’s said that humans only use ten percent of our brains, but we don’t think that’s true,” commented El Torres and Hernandez. “As you’ll see in The Veil, the other 90 percent is frantically trying to hide the horror of reality from us.”

The Veil #1 is now available in stores. Diamond order code APR09 0872.
