The 2009 Harvey Awards Nominees have been announced with the release of the final ballot, presented by the Executive Committees of the Harvey Awards and the Baltimore Comic-Con. Named in honor of the late Harvey Kurtzman, one of the industry's most innovative talents, the Harvey Awards recognize outstanding work in comics and sequential art. They will be presented October 10, 2009 in Baltimore, MD, in conjunction with the Baltimore Comic-Con.
Nominations for the Harvey Awards are selected exclusively by creators - those who write, draw, ink, letter, color, design, edit or are otherwise involved in a creative capacity in the comics field. They are the only industry awards both nominated and selected by the full body of comic book professionals. Professionals who participate will be joining nearly 2,000 other comics professionals in honoring the outstanding comics achievements of 2008. Thank you to all that have already participated by submitting a nomination ballot.
Final ballots are due to the Harvey Awards by Friday, August 28, 2009. Full details for submission of completed ballots can be found on the final ballot. Voting is open to anyone professionally involved in a creative capacity within the comics field. Final ballots are available for download at www.harveyawards.org. When all hope seems goneWhat can you do when all that which is humanly possible and beyond, has been done and it still isn’t enough? When you’re faced with odds so great, it makes you question your faith in everything? How can you face those odds, again and again, knowing in the end that you cannot win? When all hope is gone and nothing remains.
In Irredeemable #4,the world’s most powerful hero known as The Plutonian, who has power levels which could be compared to that of a certain Son of Krypton, has gone rogue. His former teammates, the Paradigm, have come to realize the little information they thought they knew about The Plutonian was all a lie.
After killing a few of his former companions, The Plutonian heads to the U.N. where many countries, just out of fear and an act of self preservation, begin offering the unstable alien a seat as head of their respected governments. Not seeming to care about their pathetic grovelling, The Plutonian continues listening to them, floating above like some angry god.
Choosing a country at random, The Plutonian asks the diplomat of Singapore why he should choose them, with the diplomat responding with a few compliments towards The Plutonian’s past service. Not knowing or realizing the omnipotent godhead before him is scanning his thoughts for sincerity, the diplomat continues his fawning. Having felt the fear and lies with his telepathic abilities, The Plutonian rushes off to space to administer his kind of justice.
It’s a good story, albeit a dark one. There is a sense of hopelessness on every page, with the colors and lines seemingly adding to the scope of loss. I liked the reactions on the Plutonian’s face, the way he seems so tired of the whining and the complaining by us mere mortals. He acts as if we are in his way, and that we should move when we are told.
Let’s hope the series last long enough in order for some hope to return.

When the mighty fall…Lord John Dalberg-Acton is quoted as saying “Power tends to corrupt, absolute power corrupts absolutely”, and never was this as true as when we sometimes witness our most trusted figures in society fall. Now imagine if the utterly unimpeachable and pure were to fall. One of the greatest symbols of purity is surely that of an Angel, but now imagine if they had human emotions, and were as corruptible as we are? What kind of world would that be if these powerful patrons of good could be consumed by greed? In WitchBlade #128: War of the Witchblades, this is exactly what happens.
After a fight between the two bearers of the Witchblade, Danielle Baptiste lies unconscious, and Sara Pezzini is left for dead. The Angelic servants of the light seek out Danielle, who is bearer of the Good side of the Witchblade. Their leader, a female Angel by the name of Sabine, seeks to be the new host to the Angelus, parent of the Witchblade, and the ultimate manifestation of good.
Ready to take Danielle away, the Angels are confronted with Det. Patrick Gleason, Sara’s boyfriend. He arrives with Hope, Sara’s daughter, and proceeds to shoot one of the Angels. Sabine orders the other Angels to kill him, but then Patrick threatens the Servants with Sara’s daughter, asking Sabine to remember what happened last time she menaced the toddler. Sabine relents, but asks Patrick to choose which girl he wants, for he can only have one of them. He begrudgingly tells Sabine to leave his love behind, and the Angel’s take Danielle and depart. Sara soon rises from her coma, healed by the Witchblade but begins to attack Patrick, not recognizing him, and turning a blind eye towards her daughter, as if the Witchblade had taken possession of her.
Sara then leaves to find Danielle, who in turn is preparing to seek out Sara herself, accompanied by the Servants, whom it seems Danielle has entered in some unholy pact with. Elsewhere, nebulous events that transpire in the midst of small antique shop will surely make Sara forget the drastic actions she took toward her loved ones, and perhaps even deter her from finding the other half of the Witchblade.
The art in this book is breathtaking; one could buy this book based solely on the artist’s depictions of the Witchblade. Never has blood and violence been rendered so well on the printed page. The author leaves tiny clues for you to follow, which in turn makes you want to follow this story even more. Any story which makes you curious about what going to happen next has succeeded, in my opinion, in telling a good story.
Although, a novice to this title would be a little lost for lack of a synopsis, but the writers do try to situate you in the grand scheme of things. An excellent story with equally excellent art, coupled with an intriguing back story, makes this a great continuation into the saga of the Witchblade.

You’re the Devil in disguise…You know those evil thoughts you think of when you get mad: the ones where you tear somebody’s head off, or wish them dead in a hundred different ways? Well imagine that your conscience took a leave of absence and you did just that, you started to commit every single act of violence, torture and degradation you ever thought of, over and over and over again....And you like it. It’s a drug, you love it and then like a car crash, your consciousness comes back and you’re hit head on with what you have done. All the horrible, nightmarish things right there in front of you. Could you handle it? Would you stay sane?
In Angel: After the fall #23, this is exactly what happens to Gunn. See after participating in the fall of Los Angeles, Gunn is again human and is incapable of dealing with his self-loathing. After committing innumerable acts of depredation, his conscience can barely endure the anguish he feels and seeks to end the pain: he doesn’t see why he should be allowed to live. Illyria, oddly enough, having some small “sparks” of Fred left in her, feels for him, wants him to heal. Through Fred’s memories and Gunn’s love of her, they seem to come to a mutual understanding. Plus with the help of Betta George, Gunn is able to talk to others about his problems at the Mosaic Wellness Center, a community center for all sorts of supernatural beings.
Although at first I was a little bummed out that the Angel character was taking a two month hiatus from the comic because, quite frankly, Gunn was never my favorite character to begin with. But the writers did surprise me. They gave Gunn a bit more of a personality than what we saw on the show. Plus, it is very nice to see them give second and third rate characters a little limelight. Overall this is a good read for fans of the show, but new comers to the series will feel a little lost.

Locke & Key should be kept under Lock & KeyLocke & Key: Head Games #6 is the end of the six-issue “Head Games” series, but asks more questions than it answers. It is a psychological thriller, as the sadistic Dodge holds Ellie Whedon in thrall, and seeks to erase all her memories of him so as to cover his tracks. The issue is an extended flashback of Ellie at a New England beach house with her evil mother and mentally retarded 14-year-old son.
The comic book exudes an aura of pure nastiness through the characters of Dodge and Ellie's mother. Dodge has Ellie's skull open with a mystical key and taunts her in her helplessness. There's a phenomenon called “sleep paralysis” (which I've experienced) where you awake from sleep while your body is still unable to move. It's rather horrific and is the best metaphor for how Dodge deals with Ellie.
In the flashback his magical control generates, Ellie's mother is an old crone who constantly insults and demeans her daughter. She constantly chain smokes, despite her grandson's health problems, and even burns him with a cigarette. Ellie's mother is completely revolting and hatred emanates from her. She reminds Ellie that her son's father left them, that men have taken advantage of her in the past, etc.
Although the book ends on a note of defiance towards Dodge, which will lead into further Locke & Key tales in the fall, I just felt glad that the whole thing was over. It's a comic so nasty it almost makes you want to take a bubble bath and eat ice cream just to forget about it. As art, it is an incisive look at injustices perpetrated on the innocent and helpless, while those who could otherwise intervene stand as frozen onlookers. However, that sort of message is conveyed far more clearly in other comics, for instance, in something more realistic and accessible like Maus.
For me, Locke & Key is too magical, too impossible, and too bizarre to feel anything other than just plain “icky”.

The World’s Greatest Super Heroes become America’s most wanted criminals – and are hunted by friends and foes alike – in “Superman/Batman: Public Enemies,” the sixth entry in the popular DVD series of DC Universe Animated Original PG-13 Movies. A co-production of Warner Premiere, DC Comics and Warner Bros. Animation, the full-length animated film will be distributed by Warner Home Video on September 29, 2009. “Superman/Batman: Public Enemies” will be available as a Special Edition 2-disc version on DVD and Blu-ray™ Hi-Def for $24.98 (SRP) and $29.99 (SRP), respectively, as well as single disc DVD for $19.98 (SRP) and On Demand. Order due date for all versions is August 25, 2009.
“Superman/Batman: Public Enemies” is based on the popular Jeph Loeb/Ed McGuinness comic series/graphic novel. Animation legend Bruce Timm (“Superman Doomsday,” “Green Lantern”) is executive producer. Michael Goguen (“Justice League: The New Frontier”) is supervising producer. Sam Liu (“The Batman”) is directing a script written by Stan Berkowitz (“Justice League: The New Frontier”).
In the film, United States President Lex Luthor uses the oncoming trajectory of a Kryptonite asteroid to frame Superman and declare a $1 billion bounty on the heads of the Man of Steel and his “partner in crime,” Batman. Heroes and villains alike launch a relentless pursuit of Superman and Batman, who must unite – and recruit help – to stave off the action-packed onslaught, stop the asteroid, and uncover Luthor’s devious plot to take command of far more than North America.

As real as it getsTo me, this issue of Justice Society is exactly why I like the series. Even though sometimes it does get bogged down with either some very campy storylines, or polar opposite ones which have darker overtones, there is one thing which is consistent: It feels real and believable.
Justice Society of America # 28 opens with the dramatic exit of the Spectre and the rest of the JSA, who are crossing over to a limbo, where the missing JSA members from the previous issue are being held by Kung. The way the news media, outside the JSA headquarters, acts when they see this grand exit is exactly what I would expect to happen. I mean, it’s kind of hard to ignore a pink elephant in the room, especially if he’s The Spectre.
As for the JSA members who were abducted, they are having a hard time trying to figure out if they really have been transported to the middle of the Second World War, or is it just an illusion created by Kung? All their senses say that this feels real, but is it? And if it is, will this adventure do any damage to the timeline?
The best part of this issue for me was the revelation of how Kung and the Spirits got out of their limbo in the first place. I enjoyed seeing how a previous storyline was tied into this one, and how the spirits escape route was well planned out. Even the vessel, which Kung chose once as a means of convenience, seemed to feel appropriate. Although I am surprised at how out of all the members of the Marvel Family, Kung chose the oldest and most unreliable. No wonder he had to change bodies again.
Another highlight for me was to see the Spectre return to the JSA. There is just something electric about him which feels right when he is working with this group. And I feel that it is this spark which is the only thing lacking in the JSA roster. With so many new recruits coming aboard, I guess I long for a touch of something familiar.
The end of the story is a bit heartbreaking though , as Atom Smasher tells Stargirl something which she doesn’t want to hear, but must accept. Atom Smasher must accept the reality of this situation also, but you can tell that even though the story might say “The End” in the final panel on the page, it feels like it really isn’t in this case.

Crisis AvertedJustice league of America #34 is the conclusion to “The Dharma Initiative” storyline.Finally coming face to face with Starbreaker, the JLA manages to pull itself together long enough in order to take down the Cosmic Vampire. It is during this battle where we learn some interesting background information about Starbreaker: The larval state of his species is apparently what we would call a Sun Eater. And this revelation is what I would call the highlight of this entire story arc.
Another development I would like to point out is the female Dr. Light seems to be cured of her fear of darkness. Now, I have always felt this was kind of an ironic situation. You have someone with complete control over the power of Light, but yet was fearful of what lurked in the shadows. To me, that doesn’t do much for the character. However, I am very happy to see how Dr. Light has evolved during this story arc. She appears to be much stronger and more confident, almost to a point where she could possibly lead the team. But with everything being up in the air at the moment, I have my doubts this would ever come to pass.
As for the conclusion of the story, I have to say it feels weak and over used. A Crisis on Infinite Earths type of merger between two parallel worlds should only be used on a grand scale, not as an afterthought in order to conclude, or explain a badly written storyline. I have a hard time believing Dharma has that kind of power and skill in order to do something like this , which BTW I have only seen one other DC character be able to pull off and make it believable: The Spectre.
I just hope now that since this Crisis has been averted, the next major one will actually bring some concrete results.

Not just full of fluff.In this day and age, when everyone is fearful of big brother watching over their shoulder, and the triumphs and pitfalls of technological advancement seem to be in the news every day, it’s not hard to imagine how a simple computerized children’s toy could be turned into a possible weapon. Usually Artificial intelligence is portrayed as being soulless, cold, and very calculating. I am glad to say that Mr. Stuffins #3 by BOOM! Studios show us that anyone can override their basic programming, and become something much more in the end.
Now for a bit of back story: Mr. Stuffins used to be a run-of- the- mill interactive toy teddy bear, until he accidentally gets installed with an experimental artificial intelligence, granting him the abilities of some of the world’s most deadly spies and assassins. Now I bet your wondering what does this A.I. do to Mr. Stuffins exactly? Well, it basically turns him into a kind of furry Dirty Harry. But appearances can be deceiving. I mean yes Mr. Stuffins might be gruff, tough, and an excellent shot, but he pulls it all off while still looking cute. Now that’s my kind of toy.
As the story progresses, Mr. Stuffins soon realizes he needs to protect Zack, the boy who recently bought him from the local toy store, from the bad guys who are on the hunt for Mr. Stuffins , and the missing A.I. disc. Along the way, Mr. Stuffins, Zack, and the rest of Zack’s family discover that they are all much more than what they seem, and what they are truly capable of accomplishing.
What really surprised me about this book was how the A.I had given Mr. Stuffins such a strict moral code. Whether or not this is a by product of the bears original programming merging with the A.I is hard to tell. The scientist who created the A.I mentions at the end of the book how he intended it to be used to help people, and in the end, you can see how much Mr.Stuffins cares for Zack, and vice-versa. This is especially true when Mr. Stuffins goes and sacrifices himself in order to save Zack’s family. But this saving goes much deeper than a simple rescue from the bad guys. I must admit it’s very rare I get emotionally touched by a book, but this one did it to me at the end. And I am glad for it.
This book is one where there is something for everyone to enjoy, making reading the series an experience to be shared, or read as a guilty pleasure. I would have to say I personally fall into the second category.

Official G.I. Joe Rise of the Cobra Movie Adaptation #1 IDWAction packed and loaded!I never read any of the old G.I. Joe comics nor watched the TV. show but I am excited to see the new movie one on top of that: to read the rest of the comics.
This comic starts off slow, with talk about a new weapon to make war ‘safer’ and it slowly introduces a few characters. While a package is being transported and protected by a special elite nato unit, enemies attack and try to steal it. This is where it gets good. Neck breaking, sword slicing, and lots and lots of explosions. Not to mention the very sexy Ana.
The action in this really seemed to explode from the pages, and the characters were instantly part of me. Almost everything in this comic was well done. In the beginning I was just utterly confused. I seemed to get distracted and bored. I did know that these boring parts were crucial for the rest of the book, if I didn't read the first half I wouldn't understand the other.
Ill say it once more: The killing and explosions were awesome! The many things going on make you look over the frames more than once. This issue #1 of G.I. Joe really seems to promise a good series about to unfold.
The story moves along quickly and it’s not at all hard to follow. The artwork is nice (as always) and a beautifully done front cover. If you ever read or watched the old G.I. Joe comics/cartoons I can’t tell you if this comic here is anything compared to the original. But for those of you who are hoping to get this comic and learn about G.I. Joe for the first time I recommend this.
This is no better or worse than a normal comic book, nor is it very exciting or suspenseful. But remember: it’s only the first issue, and it will get better. I liked it, and I would like to read more to come.

Dead Run #2Nick Masters has problems. Never mind the fact that he lives in a post apocalyptic United States, he's learned to make due by being the best courier around, but when a delivery to a crime lord named Kane got botched that's when things get interesting, he now has 24 hours to save his sister before Kane gets satisfaction one way or another.
When Nick's best route of travel gets turned into a new Grand Canyon he and his reluctant passenger Becki try to hide from a horde of mutant attackers but are quickly discovered. Nick defends them before an even lager gang descends and it's through teamwork that they narrowly escape. As they enter the Zone, they make use of Nick's armor plated car to crash through a barrier setting off a landmine and even more problems for Masters.
Dead Run reads like a comic book version of Mad Max, Cherry 2000 and Total Recall with it's grizzled survivor, companions being as different as night and day and various mutant population but all these elements mesh well together to create a story that entertains the guts and gore crowd as well as action fans. Personally, my favorite part was one of the quieter moments with a small argument over someone and it's that human interaction I enjoyed most. Andrew Crosby and Michael Alan Nelson's writing style compliment each other and Francesco Biagini's art is a good fit as well.
