DVD News: Animation legends Joe Ruby and Ken Spears discuss today's release of Ruby-Spears Superman on DVD by Warner Home Video

More than two decades after its television premiere, the popular Ruby-Spears Superman animated series returns to TV screens via Warner Home Video as a two-disc DVD collection of cartoons. The DVD is available today, November 3.



Debuting in 1988, the Ruby-Spears Superman series brought back some familiar foes and new unfriendly faces for battles against the Man of Steel. In addition to the thrills of Superman’s weekly adventures, each episode included a mini-segment called Superman Family Album that told the “real” story of what it was like to grow up as the most powerful boy in Smallville.

Produced at Ruby-Spears Productions right next door to Hanna-Barbera Studios, and animated in Japan and Korea at Toei Animation and Dai Won Animation, the series benefited by a stellar production team of writers and artists (including supervising producer John Dorman, story editor Marv Wolfman, and production designer Gil Kane), solid voice acting, and an immediate link with Christopher Reeve’s popular films via an opening theme score that was remarkably similar to John Williams’ acclaimed Superman music.

Ruby-Spears Productions was founded in 1977 by veteran writers Joe Ruby and Ken Spears. The team started as sound editors at Hanna-Barbera Studios, branched out into writing, and eventually went on to create “Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!” In total, Ruby-Spears Productions produced 36 different TV series including the hit, “Alvin and the Chipmunks.” They continue to be a creative force in the industry today.

Joe Ruby and Ken Spears took a few minutes to reminisce about the creation, development and production of their landmark 1988 series in a recent conversation. Here’s what the animation veterans had to say:

QUESTION:
How was the title character developed for your Superman series?

JOE RUBY:
“We went through a lot of different directions in development as to what kind of Superman we wanted. We had several different models – the crying/feeling Superman, the lecturing/do-gooder/save-the-day Superman, then there was the hip Superman and even the long-haired Superman. And, of course, there was the old straight-as-an-arrow Superman. Ultimately, we settled on the Christopher Reeve model – he had personality and a sense of humor, and yet he was still Superman. We figured that it worked for the films, so it would work well for us.”



QUESTION:
Why were there only 13 episodes to the entire series?

JOE RUBY:
“I think the problem for us was our timeslot. It turned out 8:30 in the morning was a killer for Superman. Only the little kids were up, and they don’t understand Superman as well as the older kids. It wasn’t for 4- to 5-year-olds”



QUESTION:
Was there a guiding theme to the series?

KEN SPEARS:
“I think we were true to Superman to begin with – we produced a show that the audience expected Superman to be. He was the tried and true Superman, That’s who they wanted to see – that’s the feedback that we continue to get today.”

JOE RUBY:
“We basically had Superman tackling anything and everything, with the marching orders to have bigger-than-life fights.”



QUESTION:
What did you see as the strength of your Superman series?

KEN SPEARS:
“We had the best talent in the business at the time – that was our strength. They were excellent. When you first create a show, you hope your talent will be able to plus it – and they really plussed it. There are so many shots in the show that weren’t written into the script – those kind of great additions come straight from the artists and the storyboarders.

JOE RUBY:
“We had a pretty amazing crew – and an especially great crew of artists – including some of the best comic book guys in the business, and that made for good filmmaking. Guys like John Dorman and Gil Kane – we had an army of great talent on that show. Give credit to John Dorman – he’s a filmmaker and that’s the difference. He made sure the show had all the creative shots, the movement, some of that great left-to-right or down-angle camera moves. The show was well paced, well boarded, and I think John really put these things together well.”



QUESTION:
Did splitting the production between two overseas studios in Japan and Korea cause any problems?

JOE RUBY:
“It was an experience for us, from a production standpoint, traveling overseas and working with two different interpreters having to translate in three different languages. They’d be answering before I’d get done with my question. It was the worst torture I ever had in my life.”



QUESTION:
Looking back now, can you see how Ruby-Spears Superman fits in the canon of productions surrounding the Man of Steel?

JOE RUBY:
“As a kid, we all grew up with Superman. He’s the favorite, always. Your heroes stick with you. So we wanted to make the best Superman show we could, to really set it apart. I think everyone that worked on it felt that way. He’s Superman.”

KEN SPEARS:
“It was like an honor to do something that classy and classic as Superman. He’s the No. 1 guy. We wanted to do it justice.”

Comic News: TODD MCFARLANE TEAMS UP WITH IMAGE FOUNDER AND YOUNGBLOOD CREATOR ROB LIEFELD ON SPAWN #196!

Image Comics founders and IMAGE UNITED collaborators join forces on the highly anticipated finale to SPAWN: ENDGAME!

For the past year, SPAWN: ENDGAME has riveted readers with its game-changing story line featuring the death of Al Simmons and Todd McFarlane's return to illustrating his seminal creation. In November's SPAWN #196, ENDGAME concludes with a bang as McFarlane shares art duties with fellow Image Comics founder Rob Liefeld.

“I was looking for good artistic help, and remembered inking over Rob on his New Mutant covers back in the Marvel days, and most recently a little bit of IMAGE UNITED," McFarlane said. "I thought it would be a fun experiment to see what Capullo layouts, Liefeld pencils and my inks looked like together on a handful of pages.”

In the conclusion of SPAWN: ENDGAME, reporter Marc Rosen connects the miracle patient stories to the new SPAWN, Jim Downing, as detectives Sam, Twitch and Rowand discover the association between Downing's awakening, Bill Winston’s suicide and the Nortego crime syndicate.

SPAWN #196 (JUL090355), a 32-page full color comic book for $2.95, will be in-stores November 25th, 2009.

Comic News: Bat Boy and Weekly World News Come to Comics

Bat Boy and the Weekly World News come to comics in January

First-ever comic series for fan-favorite tabloid characters

For years, Bat Boy and the other bizarre denizens of the Weekly World News universe have delighted millions in the long-running tabloid newspaper. Now, those same colorful characters are headed to full-color comic books for the first time with IDW Publishing's Weekly World News, a new four-issue miniseries starting in January.

Written by IDW's Publisher/Editor-in-Chief and WWN fanatic Chris Ryall, with art by Alan Robinson, Weekly World News revives the tabloid's best and sees them band together to take on, among other things, the world-destroying threat of Chaos Cloud. Each issue will also feature original articles from the original Weekly World News, and a variant cover that pays insane "tribute" to a classic image.
"Some would say my interest in bringing the Weekly World News characters to comics borders on crazed obsession," said Ryall, "and far be it from me to disagree with them. I'm just happy Bat Boy comic books never happened before, so we could break new ground here. It's been especially gratifying because Alan is well up to the task of drawing every insane thing asked of him ("Draw an angry storm cloud with the face of a former French leader? No problem!"), and the Weekly World News people have been incredibly enthusiastic about bringing their iconic characters to comics."

The series kicks off with a cover featuring Joe Corroney's version of Bat Boy, inspired by Alex Ross's painted Barack Obama pose, and a special retailer incentive Alan Robinson sketch cover of Bat Boy as Rodin's "Thinker." As another added bonus, Issue #1 will feature some of the classic Bat Boy strips by the great Peter Bagge.

"In short, Eisner Award judges, get ready to mark your ballots when you see this series," added Ryall.

This first Weekly World News miniseries gives the world a new vocabulary word in its subtitle, "The Irredemption of Ed Anger." The series unites the beloved Bat Boy with PhD Ape (simian psychologist to the stars), UFO Alien (presidential-predicting pundit from the stars), Manigator (half-man/half-gator good ol' boy), Lemmie (the Lake Erie Monster) as they battle Chaos Cloud (unpredictable weather front with the face of François Mitterand). Caught in the middle of all of this is the far-right-wing columnist Ed Anger ("pave the Rain Forest!"), who thinks inhuman freaks have as much place in America as liberals, female voters and foreign beer. Along the way, the series pays tribute to other comics and numerous other pop-culture visuals and references (so many that Ryall will be offering annotations in the back of each issue, too).

Mattel took time out their busy schedule to answer some questions

1) The aesthetic for the MOTUC line seems to be about 80% 1980's design and about 20% 200X but in cases where the 1980's figures were limited by technology or dominated by an action feature are you still going to try and stick close to the classic look? A good example would be Leech. Since there are no action features in this line, would we expect him to look more like his station or would he still have his flat sucker mouth as a nod to the original figure?

There is a good chance we would do two heads on Leech to capture his vintage action feature face and his 2002 redesign look. But he is not planned for release quite yet!

2) What are the chances of Mattel adopting a resalable kind of packaging for the MOTUC line so collectors don't need to ruin the awesome package art to get to their even more awesome figures?

Not at this time. It is something we will continue to explore.

3) Can you give us any info on the weapons packs? It was said that they would be seasonal but when do they start and when can we expect to get an idea of what kinds of things will be in them?

We are still working on this pack and are not ready to reveal details yet. When we do, we’ll make a big announcement.

4) A rumor has circulated that Mattel may be able to offer Public Enemies and poorly distributed or retail exclusive waves of the DCUC line at some point in the future through the mattycollector website. Is there any truth to that rumor?

We do plan more re-releases of older hard to find product starting with Hawkman and Robin from Superfriends later this winter.

5) Like you done for 2009: Could you say us how many MOTUC figures in 2010 are never been made before, never released as 200X and how many females could we get?

Not quite yet. We do not yet know how many bonus figures we are doing in 2010, so it is hard to give a count right now. After we see how the first few figures, including Battlecat, perform we’ll have a better idea of what 2010 will look like. Read more...

Comic Review: House of Mystery Halloween Annual (DC Comics) by Stacey Rader

House of Mystery is a book that I have consistently enjoyed from the beginning. I started reading it on the merits of Bill Willingham’s writing, and being a fan of the old DC title. Taking its cue from its predecessor, the book mixes suspenseful, sometimes horrifying, sometimes humorous stories with a continuing story of Fig and the other denizens of the House of Mystery. It fits well within the confines of the Vertigo imprint, and this book shows that.



The Halloween Annual opens with Fig trying to choose a costume and recounting the reason she hates Halloween. She decides on an unusual mask and her street clothes, and the group heads out to the bar. All of a sudden Fig begins feeling the effects of the mask and has visions of characters around the Vertigo universe. The first story, “High Spirits” (Mark Buckingham and Bill Willingham) features Merv Pumpkinhead, a character fans of the Sandman series will undoubtedly recognize. This lighthearted story is a fun peek into what happens when our nightmares party a little too hard. After a cut back to Fig and friends, we move to “Letter From a Suicide” (Peter Milligan), a John Constantine: Hellblazer story that has an unusual twist on suicide. Having not been familiar with the character, I still thought this story was well written. Next was my favorite story, “Trick or Treat! An I, Zombie Story” (Chris Roberson and Mike Allred). I, Zombie is an upcoming series from Vertigo and judging from this short sneak preview, I’m going to be adding this to my pull list, especially if Mike Allred continues to be involved. The story was equal parts horror and smart humor (like the main character being a zombie and dressing as Shaun from Shaun of the Dead) and left me wanting more. The final story, “Captive Audience” (Matt Wagner and Amy Reeder Hadley) takes place in the Madame Xanadu corner of Vertigo. It centers around a young girl and her desire to escape her difficult adolescent life. Then we return to the House of Mystery cast to close out the story.

In the tradition of comics and movies before it, each story features the mysterious mask in one way or another. I won’t reveal how here, since that’s part of the fun of this book. All in all this Annual not only introduces new readers to the fun of House of Mystery, but also why comic readers should buy Vertigo titles. The book epitomizes the quality of writing and art readers expect from these titles. At first I was a little disappointed that Fables wasn’t included in the fun, but I think that world is so self-contained it would have been a stretch. Even though I wasn’t 100% familiar with the details of every character, I didn’t feel like I was coming into the middle of any of the stories needing background information. If anything, it made me want to check out back issues of titles like Constantine: Hellblazer and Sandman.

Even though it’s past Halloween, I highly recommend picking up this title if you’ve ever been curious about characters in the Vertigo universe. It’s definitely a fun read, even if you don’t regularly read House of Mystery, which you should.

Book Review: Pixarpedia (DK Books)

In February 1986 Pixar was founded. At first, Pixar was just producing computer animated shorts, but 1995, they released their first full length feature film, Toy Story. From there on, Pixar has created 10 animated films and continues to be the leader in computer animation.

DK has released a book celebrating Pixar entitled Pixarpedia: A Complete Guide To The World Of Pixar...And Beyond!

The book goes into great detail about each movie. It has character backgrounds, detailed locations, and other interesting facts. The first chapter deals with all the movies, and the second chapter takes your further beyond the scenes of each movie. Actually getting inside the creator minds.

One of my favorite parts of the Behind Scenes chapters is how the book points out which character John Ratzanberger played in each movie. It's hilarious to think that he has become a Pixar staple.

The pure level of detail in this book makes it a very entertaining read. With colorful pictures and easy to follow explanations, this book is great for any age level.

Like all the visual dictionaries from DK, this one doesn't disappoint.

Definitely a must buy for the Pixar fan in your family. It's the perfect movie companion.

Book Review: Lego Star Wars: The Visual Dictionary (DK Books)

When I was growing up there were two things I loved, Star Wars and Lego. 1999, when Lego acquired the license of Star Wars I thought it was a great pairing. Unfortunately, I thought I was too old to start buying these Lego sets, but I could admire them. But the way the set came out, I was losing track as to what was what. DK books has now put together another book in their incredible Visual Dictionary series. Lego Star Wars.

The book is broken down into four chapters:
* Movie Saga - All the Lego toys based on all 6 movies.
* The Clone Wars - Lego sets based on the current cartoon.
* Specialist Sets - More advanced Lego sets.
* Beyond The Brick - Behind the design of these sets.

Like all DK Visual Dictionaries, this is a colorful book just filled with pictures and facts. It goes into details about the characters, the sets, release date etc. This book just goes into amazing detail with every explanation. DK really does their homework in every one of these books.

The book also comes with a Lego Luke Skywalker, in his celebration clothing, shown at the end of Star Wars Episode IV. Also in the corner of the pages is two flip cartoons. The first one is Luke in his Return of the Jedi outfit, practicing his Jedi training. The second one is of Clone Troopers marching.

This is a great book for any Lego or Star Wars fan.

I would recommend going out and buying this book immediately.
