Toy Review: Masters of the Universe Classics King Randor

December’s Masters of the Universe Classics entry was the new King Randor action figure who surprised many by selling out in a matter of days on the mattycollector.com website. Randor is the first action figure update of this character since he was released at the end of the original Masters of the Universe line back in the 1980’s, not counting his stactions released after the demise of the 200X line. With this new release, Matty gives us a major, if somewhat dull, core character from the world of Eternia.

King Randor has one of the more eventful bios so far and makes a lot of connections to other characters and events that have already been referenced in other bios, such as Keldor, King Miro, and the Great Unrest. Naturally, being King, he is a major player in Eternian goings on. The bio also references Count Marzo and a series of uprisings with which he was apparently involved. This gives me hope that we will one day see a Count Marzo figure. Another little nugget tucked away in the bio is the question of the fate of King Miro, who mysteriously disappeared.

King Randor's MOTUC figure is faithful to his vintage look to a fault. With the exception of his accessories, Randor has taken almost no visual cues from the more serious and muted 200X version of the character. This is particularly jarring in the figure’s color scheme which employs cartoony, too-bright colors.

Randor wears removable torso armor with a built in cape, much like He-Ro and Hordak. The dominant color on his upper body is a rather nauseating red-orange with gold highlights with a matching color on his furry loin cloth. The paint applications on mine were a little sloppy, especially in the loincloth where a big patch seems to be missing a coat of dark wash that is on the rest. Randor’s legs are painted a vaguely flesh-colored orange (like a bad spray tan) which gives the impression that the king is wearing short short. This is usually not an issue on the other characters because they are wearing next to nothing on their chests but with Randor it looks like he is wearing an armored long-sleeved garment with tiny shorts. It makes him seem kind of top heavy.

The headsculpt is a decent, although it makes Randor look a little too much like a 1970’s country singer. This reinforces the overall quality that the figure has of being a big burly guy who is running around in his underwear. The crown is molded into the head and seems like a generic king’s crown that you would pick up at a costume store instead of something specific to Eternia.

Where the figure really shines is in the staff and sword which are included as accessories. These items are both 200X inspired and replace the simple spear which came with the 1980’s fugure. The Sword of Eternos, in particular, is a nice piece of work with dark gray metallic paint on the blade and a golden hilt with additional gold detail on the blade face. Both weapons feature the same Celtic-inspired squared-off cross with a spherical gemstone painted on in metallic blue. It would have been nice if they had carried this motif into the sculpt of the crown to make it a little more specific. The paint and sculpting on these weapons are beautiful and they are great additions to the ever-growing MOTUC weapons arsenal (can we get a weapons rack, please?). Both pieces are very similar to the weapons included with the King Randor staction from a few years ago.

So, December was a kind of dull month for Masters of the Universe Classics, with a pair of characters who, while pivotal, are not terribly exciting. I guess this is okay as the next few months are going to be bananas with the release of Adora, Battle Armor He-Man, Trap Jaw, Battle Cat, Wun-Dar and Moss Man. MOTUC is without any doubt a great toy line but-apart from Digital River issues-its only real weakness is a tendency to fall back far too much on the original 1980’s designs. I’m fine with the fact that these figures start off as being an update of the 1980’s style but they have proven in the past that they are willing to use other elements. The real goal should not be updating the 1980’s figures but producing quality action figures with strong designs. I have no doubt that the Horsemen could have made a kick ass King Randor figure, but here Matty has chosen to go the fanwank route and recreate a dated and silly looking figure concept instead. King Randor is going straight into my Shoebox of Despondos (although his weapons will be reassigned to He-Ro).

Toy Review: Masters of the Universe Classics The Goddess

The December bonus figure for the Masters of the Universe Classics toyline was The Goddess, a long-anticipated figure based on one of MOTU’s initial character concepts from the days of the earliest minicomics. Originally known by fans as The Green Goddess, she is the prototypical sorceress/warrior/mentor character in MOTU which later split off into Teela, The Sorceress and, to a lesser extent, Evil-Lyn. As of this writing, this Teela repaint is still on sale at mattycollector.com, but if the previous bonus figure, Zodak, is any indication, The Goddess shouldn’t be available much longer. So how did this first-time-in-action-figure-form character turn out? Read on…

I rarely pay attention to packaging on my action figures as I like to open them and put them up on my display shelf, but in the case of The Goddess, I have to note the really cool way that this figure is packaged. You can see that she is posed in a way that is nearly identical to a panel from the first Masters of the Universe minicomic (her sole media appearance to date) in which she gives the barbarian He-Man his weapons. She also includes the harness, battle axe, and shield that were originally included with He-Man and I am guessing that they are included only to recreate this iconic scene in the packaging. I’m impressed that Mattel would spend the extra money to include these items only for the sake of creating a cool packaging display.

As usual, a short bio is included for this character that for years has been known as The Green Goddess but now she is officially called The Goddess of Eternia, which I suppose is somewhat of a promotion. These bios always involve a delicate dance to preserve as much of the popular continuity as possible while incorporating other narratives as well. As The Goddess is a character from the early minicomics, she doesn’t fit into the main story established by the later comics and the 200X media from which most of the MOTUC bios are drawn. With The Goddess, Mattel has introduced both a new historical era, a

kind of Eternian Dark Ages that take place in the centuries after King Grayskull and before the time of Randor and Keldor and the concept of other warriors that have taken the name “He-Man” during that time. The Goddess has the role of trainer of these He-Men, much as she was in here minicomic appearance. Recently, Wundar has been revealed to be one of these He-Men in his own bio.

While this has been controversial with some Masters of the Universe fundamentalists, I think it is a clever way to incorporate some He-Man variants and give us some characters that fans have been wanting for a while. I also like that it ties together the Ancient Eternia Era (He-Ro, Hordak, Grayskull) to the Modern Era. Masters of the Universe is really starting to have a big expansive fantasy world feel to it. Eternia is becoming a world with tons of history.

The bio still leaves me a little confused about the relationship between The Goddess, The Sorceress and Teela. In terms of story and design, The Sorceress has been an evolution of The Goddess. Teela is the cloned daughter of The Sorceress yet her action figure is a “clone” of The Goddess. Perhaps, in this new continuity, The Goddess later becomes the Sorceress, or is somehow related to her. Maybe there is more magical cloning to come. Needless to say, the bio for The Sorceress is the one to to which I am most

looking forward.

The Goddess is a straight repaint of Teela and is cast in a green translucent plastic for a ghostly look. The effect is pretty cool, although I would have probably preferred the original non-translucent, more matte finish of the prototype. Especially since the plastic used is fairly brittle. My Goddess' wrist broke off since the joint was too tight for the weak plastic.

Her molded outfit is painted in a not-particularly-nice green and gold. The “bobblehead” effect is in full force on my Goddess. This is much more noticeable since she will be likely wearing her armor most of

the time.

The figure includes some of the original Teela accessories, such as the shield and cobra armor and he head is exactly the same as the alternate Teela head. Oddly, the eyes in The Goddess’ cobra armor are painted metallic blue instead of the green used on Teela’s armor. You would think it would be the other way around. I’m finding myself wanting to switch around accessories on the figures a lot lately and I will probably give her Teela’s armor and Staff of Ka. The Goddess also comes with her own golden staff that is topped with a kind of fleur-de-lis spearhead.

In addition to all this, she comes with the He-Man accessories mentioned above, which is fine because you can never have too many battle axes, in my opinion. The harness was slightly warped due to the way it was packaged to appear as though hanging as in the minicomic. It would have been nice if there had been a little more synergy between the figure releases so that you could actually do something with this armor. For example if Battle Armor He-Man had been given an unpainted stomach, you could have slapped this extra armor on him and had yourself a He-Man. I suppose you can use put this extra armor on your Wun-Dar if you like.

Overall, The Goddess is a great character to have but I wish she would have been released a little farther down the line from Teela, as the only difference between the two is the paint and the plastic used. Personally, I display my Teela without the cobra armor so that helps differentiate them a little more. The Goddess is a pivotal character from the long and expansive history of Masters of the Universe Classics. If you don’t get her before she sells out you may not see here again for a very long time, if at all according the Matty’s official statements on re-releases.

Toy Review: Justice Guild 4-Pack (Mattel)

The Justice League Unlimited line, somewhat forgotten in the shadow of the popular DC Universe Classics, continues to provide an unprecedented array of characters spanning all regions of the DC Universe. With its next JLU MattyCollector.com release, Mattel once again presents a first with action figure versions of the Justice Guild. No specific release date has been announced.



Based on the 2002 two-part "Legends" episode of the Justice League animated series, the figures comprise four of the five members of the Justice Guild, a Golden Age-styled superhero group created for the show. Missing is Cat Man, a Batman-type caped crusader with utility belt and pointy ears. Given the plethora of repainted Batmans we've seen over the years, maybe it's destined for solo release at a later date.



What we get are Tom Turbine, The Streak, Black Siren and the Green Guardsman. Tom Turbine's the only one who's not patterned directly off of a Justice Society character. I've read suggestions that have him pegged as the Atom, Superman, Mr. Terrific (I'm guessing that's because of the big "T" on his chest and the wrestling-like belt around his waist) or a combination of characters, but he appears to be a generic powerhouse hero - the kind that does the heavy lifting for the group. The Streak (the Flash), Black Siren (Black Canary) and Green Guardsman (Green Lantern) were certainly created with JSA characters in mind.




As with other JLU figures, this foursome lacks the articulation that makes lines like DCUC so popular. No knee joints, wrists or elbows to allow for a variety of poses. However, the trade-off comes in the form of clean lines that don't distract from the highly stylized "animated" look of the figures. While it's nice to have figures that bend all over the place, sometimes those joints stand out too much and distract your focus.



Since the Justice Guild was created for the animated series, it's a natural that they join the JLU line. The bright colors and cheesy grins work in providing an animated appearance of Golden Age greats. I'd be more excited about these if they were released around the time of the first-season episodes they appeared in, but it's always a welcome surprise to see new character releases - that's part of what makes me a collector of the JLU line. A DC fan has to love the variety JLU has provided.



The major drawback, however, is that these are tough to keep standing. Black Siren has to have a stand to stay up (one is included) and the weight of Green Guardsman's cape makes him a struggle to stay upright as well.

The Justice Guild is a perfect release for MattyCollector.com because hardcore fans will definitely want these, while I wouldn't expect these figures to have much mass market appeal. Mattel officials have said they will keep releasing JLU online as long as collectors keep buying. As long as they're producing new characters, it's a chance to build a DC Universe larger than you can get with any other toy line. I say keep 'em coming.

"Unflinching" graphic novel biography of legendary heavyweight champion now in stores

The 120-page hard cover chronicles the life of the “Galveston Giant,” telling the gripping story of one man’s fight for equality. Long time comics mainstay Trevor Von Eeden (Batman, Green Arrow) captures the essence of a nation’s struggle through the lens of one of the best boxers of all time. In 1908, Jack Johnson beat a white boxer for the heavyweight world championship, sparking racial clashes around the country. Between his conquests across the color line both in and out of the boxing ring, this son of former slaves came to embody the struggle again racism that still plagues society today and an inspiration for generations of people fighting discrimination and inequality.
