Adam's Adventures: Batman #687 (DC Comics) Review by Adam P.

Passing the Cowl.

Who would have thought that Batman's young ward Dick Grayson would eventually don the cowl in his stead? Batman #687 serves as an epilogue to Battle for the Cowl and reveals that unthinkable reality. Oddly enough, it arrives a week after Batman & Robin #1 and is far better on every level.

In Batman & Robin, Grant Morrison makes the new Robin, Damian Wayne, appear to be little more than a bothersome nuisance. Here, writer Judd Winick shows us that Damian's brashness will be a foil to Dick's calm demeanour... and perhaps prove to be a real thorn in his side. A character as prickly as Damian is understandably difficult to manage, but Winick succeeds magnificently. In the hands of a less skilful writer, readers might be left wishing for Damian to be next Robin to bite the big one. Here, we're honestly concerned that this kid is going to get himself killed if Dick doesn't figure out how to reel him in.

The crux of the tale is the interplay between Alfred the butler's grief at his “son's” passing, and Dick's hesitation about stepping into the shadow of the Bat. Seeing them both cry together as they discuss the suddenness of Bruce Wayne's disappearance while planning the inevitable continuation of his legacy is an authentic sequence of human grief and resolve. This issue reveals a real human depth to Alfred and Dick. They're not just steel-faced crime fighters. They struggle and yearn to do the right thing. In some ways, Dick is a more appealing character than Bruce, because of this strong human element: his very reluctance to assume the persona of Batman is a refreshing change to the heroes who act more like invincible gods than the average Joe.

If the goal of this comic was to draw you into its world for 22 pages, and leave you wanting more, then mission accomplished. Judd Winick and Ed Benes have crafted a thoroughly believable Bat tale which shows us that Superheroes are just like everyone else.

I.M.O. Review: Booster Gold #21 (DC Comics) By Eddie R

Holy unofficial time travel crossovers Batman!

For a couple of weeks now I have been asking myself the following question: If Booster Gold knows Batman’s dead, why can’t he just go back in time and stop it? I mean is Bruce, and in fact the whole Batman Family, THAT much of a keystone in the DCU?? If you remove one, or try to alter something attached to them, the whole universe falls apart? Well after reading the beginning of this four part “Day of Death” story arc, it looks like we are going to find this out, and many more answers to some of the burning questions surrounding the “death” of The Batman.

Booster Gold#21 opens with a 3- page action sequence of Rip Hunter trying to break into Vanishing Point. Once inside, Rip is confronted by a voice, telling him he is basically a fraud, and will be found out very soon. Apparently this villain has been trying to discover Dr. Hunter’s true identity, but since Rip has hidden it so well, the only way this villain can go after him is via people who know his secret. One of those people is Booster. The other is Batman.

Summoning Booster to the Time lab, Rip makes Booster realize how the pictures Batman had of him trying to save Barbara Gordon from The Joker, which are still in the Batcave, pose a very big security threat. Therefore, Booster must go and get those pictures back in order to protect the mission.

Once at the Batcave, it doesn’t take long for Booster to break in and try to steal the photos back, but this only puts him face to face with the new inheritor of the Cowl: Dick Grayson, whom Booster guesses his secret identity in about 30 seconds. As Booster explains to Dick why he is in the cave, out of nowhere appears the mystery villain, who manages to alter the time line just enough so Booster will have to travel back into the past, and save the mantle of the Bat. So the adventure begins........

Well it seemed this week in the DCU was all about Dick Grayson, and him taking up his role as the new Batman. I have to say, depending on which writer and artist got their hands on Mr. Grayson wearing the cowl, some of this week’s bat offerings were either a joy to read or a chore. And I am glad mine turned out to be the first of the two.

I.M.O. Review: The Flash: Rebirth #3 (DC Comics) By Eddie R.

Sideswiped.

I like it when a story can throw me off now and then. I mean, after all the reading I do for my reviews, eventually things become blurred. Everything starts sounding and looking the same. You start seeing patterns. And just when you think you got everything figured out, out of left field (or possibly a corn field), comes something totally unexpected. This is what makes a good story great, and this one is only half way done.

The Flash: Rebirth#3 gives us a bit of foreshadowing of what’s to come within the first 5 panels of the issue, during which a fight takes place between an unknown assailant and Abra Kadabra. I like how the use of both words and visual aids allows the reader to read between the lines. There’s a reason why the Flash puppet gets burned. Question is by who and why?

As we read further into the issue, we see the heroes of the DCU working together to remove the black aura from Barry. The device they are building is like a lightning rod, which is suppose to extract the black aura from Barry’s body, but at the same time leave him essentially grounded and powerless. What happens next will be shocking to some, and feel like déjà vu to others. One of the major revelations I will tell you about is we finally get to see inside of the Speed Force. Well it’s not as much as what the interior of the Speed Force is like, but WHO is in there...

Now, I know the major talk about this issue will be the revealing of the mastermind behind all of this chaos. I am not going to go and ruin the surprise for anyone, but I will say the last time we saw this villain was in the "Return of Barry Allen" Storyline in The Flash (Vol.2) #74-79. Before that, he tried to replace Barry as the Flash, using his knowledge of past history in order to ruin Barry’s life. Now I know some of you out there will feel that this is a cop out, but don’t. As anyone who has read the Flash over the years knows, time travel is a tricky business, so all of this is plausible.

Now after reading this issue, my only question is this: Just whose charred remains are those in that field?
