Comic Review: Angel: Not Fade Away #3(IDW Publishing) By John H

Much of the Same…

I have been a fan of the “Whedonverse” for close to twelve years now. Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel are two of the best shows ever written in my book, and I have followed the iconic character’s journey from the screen, to novels, to comic books, and the thrill is still there. And with every issue I cannot wait to find out what is going to happen next.

Angel: Not Fade Away#3 is a recap of the awesome fifth season series finale by the same name. Beautifully drawn, the images add a depth and feeling to the story that live actors couldn’t. These frozen images bestow an almost serene like feel to the violent end of Wesley’s magic slinging. The story somehow feels more real when read like this. As the story unfolds panel by panel, it doesn’t feel rushed, and you get to sense the hopelessness of their situation in a much more surreal way. The look on their individual faces as they scan the innumerable demon horde is both priceless and poignant.

It was great to see this story again in a different format, but then again it could have been a bit better. I felt like there was a lack of initiative to showcase the same scenes from different angles, perhaps showing what happens to some of the characters when they went off screen. Possibly they might have shown scenes from the perspective of the Senior Partners, or from some of the villain’s point of view, or even other inhabitants of the “Whedonverse”. Overall it was not bad recap of past events, but I just feel the writers could have done more with it.

Comic Review: Greek Street #1 (Vertigo) By John H

What a mess…

Funny how if for one second you think life has finally giving you a break, then you find out the brief reprise you were experiencing, was fate preparing to take a swing at your head. Really, how can you tell when something bad is going to happen? I mean, sometimes our deluded senses think well we can’t go any lower, but then they decide “Hey, let’s make this fall from grace a @#$%^&* spectacle”.

This was the overall impression I got when I read Greek Street #1. The characters seem to be on the verge of various epiphanies or inward voyages. The various protagonists (if you can imagine these characters as do-gooders) are involved in various dealings on this particular street. This is a very loose introduction; the authors do not delve too deeply into the individual storylines, preferring rather to rely on the visually poignant and violent scenes set upon this lugubrious street.

The cast of characters seem to be a mixed lot: A deluded teen who was put in a home as a toddler, seeks out his mother and will do anything to make sure she remembers him. A closeted detective, who while investigating a gruesome murder site, seems to be haunted by trio of spectres. A Mafioso, with a decidedly wicked sense of justice, is willing to use his own son to prevent a gang war from erupting. A down on her luck stripper, who thinks her ticket out of hell, is becoming a mistress to one of her clients. These are just a few of the characters whom seek redemption, but cannot for the life of them see the light, as they are so blinded by their inner darkness.

The story is very much like a car accident: you know you shouldn’t look, but you can’t help yourself. The scenes are very graphic, almost too graphic at times, and the writing is as equally vivid. This is definitely not a book for kids, but adults will find this haunting comic a guilty pleasure in itself. The last page alone is enough to make you want the next issue!

8.5/10

Comic News: IMAGE COMICS AND THE SKY PIRATES OF NEO TERRA TAKE FLIGHT THIS SEPTEMBER!

SKY PIRATES OF NEO TERRA to set the stage this September for the upcoming Nintendo DStm fantasy racing game!

THE SKY PIRATES OF NEO TERRA saga begins in a new five issue series with BURN illustrator Camilla D’Errico, FICTION CLEMENS writer Josh Wagner and SKY PIRATES creator Sean Megaw, setting the stage for the upcoming Nintendo DStm racer from Day 21 Studios and Big Sandwich Games, this September.

"Normally writing for an established property is a strict creative process, but the flush world of SKY PIRATES OF NEO TERRA has given us the freedom to have a lot of fun,“ writer Josh Wagner said. "In addition, since the video game uses Camilla’s art for character conversations, it’s very natural to take those illustrations to the next level.”

SKY PIRATES OF NEO TERRA is the tale of a fantasy world once devastated by global catastrophe. Through the tradition of Glidewing racing, order is preserved amongst the remaining tribes with an annual Great Race, where the winner of five consecutive glidewing races selects a leader for the Great Tribal Council. The Pirate King has won four victories leaving him poised to undo the order the tribes of Neo Terra have worked to preserve. With the help of friends, an impulsive young glide wing pilot named Billy Boom Boom must stop the Pirate King before he unleashes dark forces that would change existence, as they know it.

SKY PIRATES OF NEO TERRA (JUL090343), a 32-page full color comic book for $2.99, will be in stores September 30, 2009.

SYNOPSIS
Wendy Watson (Morales) is a 22 year-old art school graduate struggling to stay afloat at a series of dead-end temp jobs. Living with her best friend Lacey (Morgan) in an illegal sublet, she bounces from one temp job to another while putting off her mother’s daily inquiries to what she is going to do with her life. Wendy’s situation takes a drastic turn during a routine temp assignment at a local laboratory, when she is thrown into the middle of a science experiment gone very wrong. If that weren’t bizarre enough, who should show up to save the day, but a mysterious, handsome, gun-wielding stranger who introduces himself only as…The Middleman (Keeslar).

A covert hero who neutralizes any and all danger humanity isn’t prepared to face, the milk-drinking, ruggedly wholesome Middleman is in need of a new colleague in the fight against other worldly evil and thinks Wendy fits the bill. After a series of tests that would make grown astronauts weep and Navy Seals beg for mercy, Wendy is quickly recruited into the Middleman ranks. Now fighting criminals under the guidance of her new boss, Wendy tries to wrap her head around the new and definitely weird situation. But the Middleman is sure she can do the job, even though his cranky robot assistant Ida (Gleason) questions his choice every step of the way.

Soon Wendy learns that there will always be another unfathomable peril to contain and focusing on her painting will be easier said than done. Now living a double life, can Wendy balance an undercover Middleman mission with “normal” life in her offbeat circle of artist friends?

“The Middleman” is created and executive produced by Javier Grillo-Marxuach, based on his Viper Comics Graphic Novels (illustrated by Les McClaine). The series is also executive produced by John Ziffren and co-executive produced by Hans Beimler. Director Jeremiah Chechik acts as supervising producer, with producer Jon Pare, co-producer Sarah Watson and supervising producer Tracey Stern.

Comic Review: Star Trek: Crew #5 (IDW Publishing) By Eddie R

Well on her way to becoming Number One.

One of the things I used to like about the Star Trek: the Next Generation TV series was the briefing meetings the Senior Staff used to have. It was those meetings which gave the show a sense of reality in my opinion, and I am glad John Byrne has managed to bring that feeling to this book.

Star Trek: Crew #5 flash forwards three years from where the previous issue ended, where we find our female lieutenant is still serving aboard the U.S.S Enterprise alongside Captain Robert April, his wife Dr. Sarah April, and first officer Christopher Pike. Along with these old faces, we have a few new ones. I won’t say who they are, but it’s safe to bet the future bridge crew under Captain Pike will be taking shape very shortly.

The story itself is one which could be used for anyone one of the previous incarnations of the Star Trek TV franchise. But Mr. Byrne uses it very well here, and makes it his own. The plot revolves around the disappearance of entire solar systems and time travel, but it is the way Mr. Byrne draws the action sequences, and how the story is written, which makes you wish this comic book series would become an actual TV Show. But until that happens, this will have to satisfy any fan of the Original series. And trust me, it does.

All the little details are there; from the mention of Lithium Crystals to the term “Time warp factor”, which are both relevant to the time period, along with the little touches Mr. Byrne puts into the ships decor and crews uniforms. It is truly a feast for the eyes as much as it is for the mind. The colors and tones used are those which you would find in the original series, giving this book a very rich and nostalgic feeling.

Even though this book is set in the Pre- classical era of the original Star Trek universe, this series is bound to become a classic in its own right.

Comic Review: Green Lantern Corps # 38 (DC Comics) By Eddie R.

Shattered

Green lantern Corps #38 to me is a fine example of how a comic book should end when a new story arc is just about to take over. While this issue leaves more us with more questions than it answers, the questions it does raise are quite valid, and set the tone for the upcoming Blackest Night event.

The biggest highlight of the issue has to be the showdown between Guy Gardener, Kyle Rayner and the Alpha Lanterns. A new order has been invoked by the returning Guardians, and the morality issues it raises not only will have fans wondering what has gone wrong, but it seems even the characters themselves. Kyle especially has a hard time trying to understand why this action is being taken. But I can see why the Guardians have asked the Alpha Lanterns to do such a task. Only a machine with no heart would be able to.

Intertwined between those major plot developments, we are given glimpses into the other story lines which have been part of this tale. On Korugar, we see the aftermath of Soranik’s encounter with her alleged father Sinestro, and how she is trying to come to grips with this revelation. We also witness the fallout from the transformation of the Daxamites due to being exposed to the rays of a yellow sun, as Arisia leads an all out assault on Mongul, causing him to change both his base and course of action.

But for me, the most telling scene of things to come happens when the battery shell surrounding Oa breaks apart at the beginning of this issue. This one act, exposing the planet to the rest of the universe, and the symbolism it implies as something seeming indestructible lies in ruin, is very much a perfect example of foreshadowing. It is here where Guy Gardener makes a very astute observation: “Anything that gets made can be unmade”. And I think that once sentence sums up this current issue of GLC and the conclusion to the Emerald Eclipse story arc.

8.5/10

Toy News: Doctor Who at SDCC!

Exciting things happening with Underground Toys this July at San Diego Comic Con!

Underground Toys has no less than 6 exclusive items this year!! 5 Doctor Who’s and one great Torchwood item (details to be officially released very soon).
Also the BBC have recently confirmed that the star of the show, our very own 10th Doctor – David Tennant – is visiting the show along with his buddies Russell T Davies (Writer) and Julie Gardner (Producer)!

Sixth Doctor with ‘Real Time’ Blue coat - $20
This alternative costume was most visibly used in the BBC webcast 'Real Time' (having previously appeared on a few book and audio book covers). It varies vastly from the gaudy coat of many colors normally worn by Colin Baker's sixth Doctor whilst retaining some design elements including the dandy's tie and question mark shirt collar. For many fans this has become almost the preferred costume with it's more muted, less frivolous, colorways.

Second Doctor with Telos Cyber Tombs Cyberman 2 Pack (colour) - $40
This is the first appearance of the second Doctor, Patrick Troughton as part of Character Options classic figure series. Troughton was the first actor to experience the Doctor’s regeneration in the Cybermen storyline ‘The Tenth Planet’ first broadcast on 29th October 1966. At the time the show was shown in black and white and the color used on these figures are authenticated by the many existing ‘behind the scene’ shots. The Cyberman is the version which appears, discovered in the cyber-tombs of the planet Telos, in the episode ‘The Tomb of the Cybermen’ (Sept 1967).

First Doctor with Dalek Invasion Of Earth ‘Black’ Dalek 2 Pack (colour) - $40
This is the first appearance of the first Doctor, William Hartnell as part of Character Options classic figure series. It was Hartnell who brought the Doctor to our screens in that very first broadcast on 23rd November 1963. At the time the show was shown in black and white and the color used on these figures are authenticated by the many existing ‘behind the scene’ shots. The Dalek is from the ‘’Dalek Invasion of Earth’ (Dec 1964) storyline and varies most conspicuously from later versions by the double neck banding and the energy dish collecting aerial on the rear. The Black Dalek was designated by rank as the ‘Supreme Controller’.

TV News: JIM CAVIEZEL, JAMIE CAMPBELL-BOWER & LENNIE JAMES DESCEND ON COMIC CON 2009 TO PRESENT AMC’S EPIC MINI-SERIES “THE PRISONER”

“The Prisoner” Panel Event and Exclusive Sneak Preview Take Place
Friday, July 24th at 11:30am

Highly Anticipated Six-Part TV Event Premieres in November on AMC

Stars of AMC’s highly anticipated mini-series “The Prisoner,” including Jim Caviezel (The Passion of the Christ, Thin Red Line, Pay It Forward), Jamie Campbell-Bower (Sweeney Todd, The Twilight Saga: New Moon) and Lennie James (“Jericho”) descend on Comic Con 2009 for a panel event and exclusive sneak preview of the highly anticipated six-part series. “The Prisoner” panel, scheduled for Friday, July 24 at 11:30am, also features “The Prisoner” writer Bill Gallagher (Conviction, Clocking Off) and AMC’s Vlad Wolynetz, vice president of production, and will be moderated by producer and director Robert Meyer Burnett. “The Prisoner,” a re-imagination of the 1960s cult classic created by the late Patrick McGoohan, premieres this November on AMC.

During the hour-long event, Burnett will lead panelists in a discussion about their personal experience making “The Prisoner,” shooting the series in Namibia and South Africa, and the various themes explored in the re-imagination, among other topics, followed by an exclusive first look at the mini-series, and a Q&A session with attendees.

“The Prisoner” panel will be complemented by a number of on-the-ground activities taking place throughout Comic Con:
• Attendees will have an opportunity to obtain their own Village identity by visiting “The Prisoner” booth to pick-up an official Village ID badge, on which they will be identified by number only.
• AMC will distribute a mini comic book created by Marvel Comics, based on the mini-series first hour.
• AMC will distribute limited edition items featuring the original series’ iconic taglines such as “Be Seeing You,” “You Only Think You’re Free” and “I Am Not A Number.”

About “The Prisoner”
“The Prisoner” tells the story of a man, “Six” (Caviezel), who wakes up to find himself inexplicably trapped in a mysterious and surreal place, The Village, with no memory of how he arrived. As he frantically explores his new environment, he discovers that Village residents are identified by number, have no memory of any prior existence, and are under constant surveillance. The Village is controlled by one man - the sinister and charismatic “Two” (Ian McKellen). Throughout the series, “Six” and “Two” are locked in a battle of wits, as “Six” challenges the oppressive nature of The Village and struggles to learn the truth behind it.

“The Prisoner” is AMC’s second original mini-series and combines a wide range of genres, including espionage, thriller and sci-fi, into a unique and compelling drama. The six part mini-series will reflect the same key elements of paranoia, surveillance, liberty, and socio-political commentary seen in McGoohan’s enigmatic original.

AMC co-produced “The Prisoner” with UK producer Granada and ITV. Granada International will distribute the series worldwide. Produced by Michelle Buck and Damien Timmer of Granada, the new series is written by Bill Gallagher and directed by Nick Hurran (It’s a Boy Girl Thing, Little Black Book).
