COMIC REVIEW: Aladdin: Legacy of the Lost #2 (Radical Publishing)

Adventure reigns supreme in the second issue of Radical Publishing's three-issue miniseries, Aladdin: Legacy of the Lost. Though I wasn't blown away by the first issue in terms of action, Ian Edginton's story did keep me engaged enough to see if this issue would deliver. This issue delivered in so many ways.




The story so far, if you missed the first issue, follows Aladdin, who has escaped after being betrayed by the sorcerer Qassim and discovered a magic lamp. Now he lives in an opulent palace outside his hometown of Shambhalla as a "Golden Prince" with the Djinn of the Lamp beside him. This issue opens with Aladdin parading through Shambhalla, creating a spectacle that has piqued the interest of King Rhokari and awakened the ire of Princess Soraya. After a visit as the Prince, Aladdin reveals himself to Soraya. He returns to help the king regain his love, and is once again betrayed by Qassim. Through the fray, Soraya is captured, and the adventure begins. The next 40 pages bring Aladdin (and us) on an adventure you'd expect from a tale of Aladdin. Part Arabian Nights, part Ray Harryhausen, we see creatures, magic, action, and so much more.

Just like with the first issue, Patrick Reilly and Stjepan Sejic outdo themselves with the lush paintings that accompany Edginton's story. From the Shambhalla city streets to the lands above and below, we are treated to a feast for the eyes that never leaves the reader wanting.

With films like Clash of the Titans and Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, I'm sure stories like this will be in high demand. Readers should pick up this series to get a dose of classic adventure and beautiful sights.

COMIC REVIEW: FVZA #3 (Radical)

You can't go anywhere at all without encountering vampires. They have taken over every form of media, from literature to TV to movies to licensing, and good or bad, they are here to stay. I could go on about the finer points of what's good and horribly bad in the vampire invasion, but that's another post for another time. Radical Publishing's FVZA 3-part miniseries, thankfully, falls into the good column.





David Hine's story centers around the Federal Vampire and Zombie Agency, specifically its leader, Hugo Pecos, and his grandchildren Landra and Vidal. The FVZA has returned in response to a zombie outbreak, but soon begin dealing with a nest of vampires. The interesting part is that Hugo's wife is Yaelis, queen of the vampires. Issue 3 begins right after this revelation, leading to the showdown between Hugo and his former love.

The story is half Bram Stoker, half Tom Clancy. As Pecos sends his agents out to clear the vampires' nest, I was even reminded of the beginning of Hill Street Blues, when the captain says "Let's be careful out there." (But I think that's just my pop culture filled brain.) The vampires are plotting to release the zombie virus on Halloween of all days, so the FVZA is out to stop them. The action, skillfully drawn by Roy Allan Martinez and Wayne Nichols, is interesting to see. I'm not usually a fan of painting style comic art, but it suited this story.

I didn't really know what to expect from this book, but I enjoyed it. It was a traditional vampire story with a modern twist, and was a bright spot among all the vampire noise out there. It's definitely a buy if you are looking for a good horror comic.

Comic Review: Aladdin: Legacy of the Lost #1 (Radical)

Radical Comics returns to mystic Arabian nights with Ian Edginton’s Aladdin: Legacy of the Lost. This revisit to the classic story of the boy and his genie is very faithful to what I remember of the old story, with a few new twists and turns. The story is interesting enough, but almost seems like a story better suited for cut scenes in a video game. However, Patrick Reilly’s lush landscapes and storybook-like illustrations are a feast for the eyes.




To begin, I am not saying I didn’t like the story. On the contrary, I actually liked the story, but in this issue, it was more setup and rehashing than “Wow, wait to see what happens next!” That can be a positive, though, because readers may stay tuned to see what’s new. Others may pick this up and realize they’ve heard it all before and not come back. My take on it is that if you’re a fan of Aladdin and Aladdin-type stories, you’ll enjoy it.

Reilly’s art is the star of this book. It reminds me of an old leather-bound storybook with gilded pages. The inks are warm and suit the richness of the story’s setting very well. He captures the action of the story as well as the magic of the old tale. The cover duties are shared by revered cover artists Marko Djurdjevic, Arthur Suydam of Marvel Zombies fame, and Clayton Crain, and all are equally beautiful, though I’m partial to Suydam’s art myself.

I would recommend this book to anyone who’s looking to add a few new adventures to an Aladdin collection, or to anyone who likes a good old-fashioned adventure tale. Though this first issue was, in my eyes, little more than setup, I can see that this story has potential.

Comic News: Rick Remender begins the countdown to The Last Days of American Crime

In the not-too-distant future, as a final response to terrorism and crime, the U.S. government plans in secret to broadcast a signal making it impossible for anyone to knowingly commit unlawful acts. To keep this from the public, the government creates a distraction, installing a new currency system using digital charge cards.


Radical Publishing is excited to announce the December 2009 debut of The Last Days of American Crime, created and written by critically acclaimed author Rick Remender (Punisher, Fear Agent) and Illustrated by Greg Tocchini (Thor, 1602: New World). The three-issue miniseries will be the latest in Radical Publishing’s 64-page bookshelf format with a low $4.99 price point.

The Last Days of AmericanCrime tells the story of Graham Brick, a petty criminal never quite able to hit the big score.
