Comic Review: Transformers: All Hail Megatron #13 (IDW Publishing) by Adam P.

Strap Yourself In For Some Classic Transformers Goodness

Originally planned as a 12-issue limited series, Transformers: All Hail Megatron #13 kicks off a four-issue coda that IDW is serving up to meet fans' demand for more. The issue is a terrific jumping off point for new readers as a fresh story arc kicks into motion in the wake of the events in the maxi-series.

I've recently been enjoying the twenty-fifth anniversary DVD re-release of season one of the Transformers animated series. Everything in All Hail Megatron is reminiscent of what was great about the mid-80's cartoon show: Autobot camaraderie, Optimus Prime's humility, the scarcity of Energon, Starscream's plans to usurp Megatron's leadership, Soundwave's dogged allegiance to the Decepticon ruler, the fickleness and infighting between Decepticons. Even despite the great strides made by the feature films, my conception of Transformers is anchored in the original G1 toy line, which is used in this series.

There are two separate stories in this issue, with quite different artwork. First we see Ironhide discuss his future involvement in the war on the Decepticons with his old comrade-in-arms, Optimus Prime. Their conversation is of course surprisingly human and cleverly interspersed with sepia-toned flashbacks from their first encounters and early battles together. It's the perfect mix of dialogue and action and we even get a rare glimpse of Optimus Prime without a mask.

The second story focuses on the Decepticons, now hundreds of light years from earth. Starscream is Megatron's heir apparent as the ailing leader is on his proverbial deathbed. But don't name the series All Hail Starscream just yet: even with his vital signs critically low, Soundwave and other loyalists are sticking by his side and attempting to nurse him back to health. Meanwhile Starscream nearly throws away an Autbot artifact before realizing it could hold the key to his permanent assumption of power.

The issue is everything you could hope for from a Transformers comic, is immensely satisfying and leaves you hungry for more.

Comic Review: The Art of Top Cow (Top Cow Productions) by Adam P.

Angels and Demons and Lascivious Ladies

How do you define art? One story that helps me understand the very human concept of artistry is the painting of an old chair. Consider any old chair that you could buy for a song at a thrift shop or find at the curbside on garbage collection day. For all intents and purposes the chair has almost no value. But suppose Van Gogh were to have made a painting of that same chair in his inimitable style. That painting would be priceless though its subject be worthless. That is the paradox and the logic behind what we call art: transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary, making concepts truly sublime.

Consider similarly the fine line between pop and art in the field of music. Some songs are obvious throwaways, meant to move some bottoms on the dancefloor for a few weeks until being relegated to one-hit-wonder retrospectives. Other music stands the test of time and is passed on from generation to generation like the cultural treasure that it is.

So too we have in comic books the same conundrum. What can truly be classified as art, like the classic panels of the silver age? What is meant for the 50-cent comic bins, like all those wild specialty covers and gimmicks of the early nineties?

By its very title, the massive coffee-table book The Art of Top Cow would hope to be classified as art. A simple inspection of its contents has me begging to differ. The entire book is riddled with exploitative poses of women who are unbelievably scantily clad appearing ridiculously calm in outrageously dangerous situations. The overall impression, is that yes, Mark Silvestri has done something amazing in raising up a stable of extremely capable and talented artists at Top Cow in the wake of Image's boom and bust. But too much of what is found here is just the same tired repetition of illustrated male adolescent fantasies. It's almost a wonder that feminists aren't up in arms about it.

Granted, the entire 320-page book is well-paced and well-produced, often placing pencilwork beside the finished product and highlighting characters and artists from Top Cow's entire universe. Certainly a lot of thought and care went into producing this $50 behemoth.

And there are some interesting and shocking religious and fantasy themes developed with crucifixions, broken stained glass windows, dragons and downright hellfire. But soon enough another bombastic babe will appear and shatter any illusion of who Top Cow is trying to get through to.

It's a shame, really. Women are so much more complex and interesting than the buxom exhibitionists we find here. Couldn't they have found some regular down-to-earth next-door-neighbor type of gal to inherit these ancient relics that are going around?

So it's certainly impressive illustration, but I'd argue it's missing that special something to truly elevate it to the level of art. This book should mainly appeal to those who've already pre-ordered it and own much of the material re-presented here.

Comics Review: Doctor Who: Room with a DĂ©jĂ  Vu #1(IDW Comics) By Eddie R

DĂ©jĂ - Vu Askew

When a book advises you that it might be easier to read it backwards, you know you’re in for a good story, and that’s what you get here with Doctor Who: Room with a DĂ©jĂ  Vu #1.

Taking place in a sector of the galaxy called the Dead zone, we find the Doctor on his latest solo adventure, confronted with receiving a mysterious distress signal from a cobbled together space station called the Great Refuge. It seems a plague of sorts has been affecting this sector of the galaxy for centuries, and this station is the result of the survivors finding one another. But not is all well on this station. There is an even deeper mystery as to why the Doctor would have received a distress call in the first place. Such transmissions are forbidden on the station due to the plague, but yet one has managed to be sent never the less.

Soon we learn there is has been a murder on the station, and the authorities enlist the aid of the Doctor in interrogating the alien responsible. Why the Doctor you may ask? Well let’s just say the alien in question is sort of a reverse Time Lord, and only someone with the doctor’s expertise would be able to interview him to find out if he is guilty of this crime or not. This leads of a brilliant sequence where you must read it in order to fully understand it. And I applaud the writer for pulling it off.

This is your standard Doctor Who adventure, complete with temporal paradoxes and all. The end of the story does foreshadow about something coming, and getting prepared for it. But until then, let’s continue with these well written adventures, and in the words of the Doctor himself “Allons-Y!”

Comic Review: Star Trek: Spock Reflections #1 (IDW Publishing) By Eddie R

Looking back in order to move forward

As a loyal Star Trek fan, I am used to the scenario where within the space of one or two episodes, the entire Star Trek timeline gets altered in one way or another. Usually this is something localized, or having more of a widespread effect throughout the Federation. But usually, this altered timeline gets corrected and resolved within this one or two episode span. Hence a good story, but no major changes done to the overall Star Trek universe. This time around however, things are different.

Star Trek: Spock Reflections #1 deals with the aftermath of the recent continuity change surrounding Spock from the newest Star Trek film. What struck me the most was where the writers decided to begin this fill-in-the-blanks story: the aftermath of the death of Captain James T. Kirk, which in itself was very controversial when the seventh Star Trek movie, Generations, came out in 1994. But rest assured this matter, among others, is addressed quite tastefully in this issue.

The second flashback has to deal with Spock’s childhood on Vulcan. And I must say its pretty standard fair. All Trek fans know Spock had a hard time fitting in on Vulcan, being half human- half Vulcan himself, and this put quite a strain on his relationship with his father Sarek. This flashback deals with that strain in a bit more detail, but not much.

So the big question is does this series address the changes to Spock’s timeline as a result of what happened in the new Star Trek movie? I would have to say somewhat. But then again it’s only the first issue, and I do like what I have seen so far.

As I read this issue, it felt like this could be very easily made into a movie. You can sense the writers took great care in crafting a plausible scenario for this story to take place in, and build it upon the already well known history most Trek fans hold dear.

The only way of truly moving forward is looking back from where we came, and this first issue does just that.

Comic Review: Fall of Cthulhu: Nemesis #4(BOOM! Studios) by John H

Keep your friends close and your enemies even closer…

What goes around comes round. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Judge not lest ye be judged. Does any of this sound familiar? All these old adages about being good, keeping your nose clean and basically warning us of the dire circumstances of committing vile acts seem to be lost at times, and this is even more apparent in Fall of Cthulhu: Nemesis #4

In this final issue of the four part story, King Levin’s plans to become both King and D’Harin come full circle, but perhaps not in the way he had intended. The D’Harin has plans of his own. However, for his former nemesis, a priest of Nyarlothep, who has seemingly helped the D’Harin gain allies among the varying factions of Atlantean society, treachery may be afoot. How will the gods’ pass judgment on these two brothers, both bent on usurping the others power by any means necessary? The end results will be quite surprising to the reader.

Overall I found the various levels of intrigue and deception in this comic to be laughable at best. This series seems to me as to been written as a synopsis for an afterthought. I found the story to be nonsensical and bland. This story could have been great if it had a bit of passion or imagination. It is nothing spectacular compared to previous chapters in this series.

EA AND DARK HORSE COMICS BLAST OFF WITH MASS EFFECT COMIC SERIES

Sci-Fi Comic Prequel Bridges Heroic conclusion of Mass Effect and Mysterious Beginning of Mass Effect 2

BioWare™, a studio of Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) and Dark Horse Comics today announced a new comic book series based on Mass Effect™, the blockbuster sci-fi action videogame that IGN.com rated the #1 Xbox 360™ game of all time. In Mass Effect: Redemption, the story takes readers through the treacherous events leading up to Mass Effect 2 which opens with galactic hero Commander Shepard having mysteriously gone missing and left to fight for survival. What unfolds next will expose readers to new locations, aliens and extended storyline in the Mass Effect universe. Mass Effect: Redemption is scheduled to launch in January 6, 2010.

The Mass Effect: Redemption story is written by Lead Writer Mac Walters at BioWare. Walters is the script writer behind Mass Effect 2. He brings unique insight to the Mass Effect comic and nuance of the world within. The comic is scripted by John Jackson Miller (Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, The Invincible Iron Man) and drawn by Omar Francia (Star Wars Legacy). This first four-part series explores the exotic and dangerous future Milky Way of Mass Effect, revealing previously unseen locations, aliens, and enemies of this rich science fiction landscape.

Mac Walters and Omar Francia will be autographing a Comic-con exclusive Mass Effect signing card at the Dark Horse booth (#2615) on July 24th at 4:00pm – 5:00pm at Comic-Con International 2009 in San Diego, CA.

“Fans of Mass Effect are going to be pleasantly shocked by the events in these comics," says Mac Walters. "We worked very closely with Dark Horse to make sure this story was built in to the Mass Effect 2 arc, right from the ground up. Reading the series won’t just add to your experience of the universe, it will change the way you look at Mass Effect 2… and beyond.”
“Those familiar with Mass Effect are aware that it offers one of the deepest and most compelling universes in the history of space adventure,” says Dark Horse President and Publisher Mike Richardson. “We have a long history of successfully adapting properties such as Aliens, Star Wars, and Serenity into comics, and we feel that Mass Effect has tremendous potential with regard to graphic storytelling.”

The narrative in Mass Effect: Redemption picks up just as Commander Shepard disappears and is left without the support of the crew on the Normandy in the lawless Terminus Systems. Shepard must fight for survival, and will be assisted by close companion, Dr. Liara T’Soni, to come home alive. This story is sure to be a must-read for fans looking to fill the gap between the first and second game.

Mass Effect: Redemption issue 1 hits comic shop shelves in January 6, 2010.

Mass Effect 2 is scheduled for release on Xbox 360 and PC in early 2010. Follow us on Twitter at: www.Twitter.com/masseffect2. For more information about BioWare please visit www.bioware.com

Movie News: John Fusco to Write Screenplay for “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” Motion Picture

Veteran Hollywood Scribe to Write Screenplay for Film Scheduled for 2011 Release

TMNT Productions, in association with Mirage Studios, has signed veteran screenwriter John Fusco to create the script for the upcoming live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles theatrical film targeted for release in 2011. Fusco joins the creative team with producers Scott Mednick (“300,” “Superman Returns”) and Galen Walker (“TMNT”) to re-tell the origin story of the legendary foursome co-created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird.

Fusco brings a unique perspective to the classic property, with credits ranging from the original “Young Guns” and its sequel, to "Hidalgo" and last year's "The Forbidden Kingdom" starring Jet Li and Jackie Chan. He also recently completed the script for a contemporary version of the classic "Seven Samurai" for The Weinstein Company.

In addition to his film industry credits, Fusco brings years of martial arts training and inspiration to the new screenplay. His interest in Korean martial arts began at age 12, and his passion continues today through ongoing study of Shaolin Kung Fu as well as the history and culture behind these ancient practices.

"It is always exciting when you can come aboard a project that bridges the worlds of what you do with what you love,” said Fusco. “I have always been a fan of the Turtles and the world of martial arts is my lifelong passion. I look forward to this great opportunity."

“John brings to our team the perfect blend of talent, expertise and enthusiasm for the property and the genre,” said Mednick. "We are committed to bringing to the screen a vital, vibrant and contemporary effort that is the next chapter in this venerable franchise."

“Working with the original comics created by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman will allow both the new and first generations of fans to experience the Turtles in a whole new light,” said Walker. “Tapping into the rich of history of these heroic and loved brethren should prove to be a phenomenal collaborative adventure for us all.”

“From the first stages of planning this movie, we were committed to finding a group of the most passionate, creative and experienced individuals who appreciated the history and myth of the TMNT, to craft a new vision of the Turtles for Mirage to share with current fans and to captivate a whole new generation,” said Gary Richardson CEO, Mirage Studios.

Announcement of Fusco’s role comes as the Turtles’ 25th Anniversary “Shell-ebration” culminates its cross-country tour at San Diego Comic-Con where Fusco, Mednick and Walker will join Turtles co-creator Kevin Eastman and Steve Barron (director of the original 1990's film) and others on a panel to discuss the project and the history of the property on Friday, July 24.

Peter Laird, Gary Richardson, Frederick Fierst, Eric Crown and Napoleon Smith III will serve as executive producers of the film. The project is being funded through Lightbox Productions, LLC.

4Kids Entertainment, master licensing agency for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles property, will handle all licensing activity on TMNT movie-related merchandise.

Additional information is available on the www.tmnt25.com and www.4kids.tv Websites.

FANTASTIC FOUR VISIONARIES: JOHN BYRNE VOL. 1 TPB (NEW PRINTING)
Written by JOHN BYRNE
Penciled by JOHN BYRNE
Cover by JOHN BYRNE
It was the world’s greatest comic magazine. Again. Not since the days of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the trailblazers of the very mythology known as the Marvel Universe, had someone so perfectly captured the intense mood, cosmic style and classic sense of adventure of Marvel’s first family of heroes – the Fantastic Four. Writer. Penciler. Inker. Visionary. John Byrne took these characters, whose powers resulted from each of them being bathed in cosmic rays during a flight into space, and launched them into realms where few creators before this had dared to go… Byrne reminded us all there was a family at the heart of this team of adventurers. The Fantastic Four has always been called “The World’s Greatest Comics Magazine.” The evidence is found in these very pages. Collecting FANTASTIC FOUR #232-240.
