Comic Review: Fallen Angel: Reborn #3 (IDW) By Matt Hill

Peter David tries again with his character Liandra the fallen guardian angel in Fallen Angel: Reborn,(fitting). This issue features Illyria, who turns out to be a character from the long canceled Angel (spin-off of Buffy the Vampire Slayer).

The story begins with a scene at a rained on cemetery. Illyria is marveling at her mystical, bladed weapon when Liandra tries to grab the weapon from her, and with a white flash they are transported from the city of Bete Noire to the Arctic. That white flash sets the tone for the art work throughout the rest of the book. Apparently the Arctic at daylight makes for so much white scenery. I so wish this story was set when the Arctic was at dusk. Not only would it have been easier on the eyes, but it would have also given the artist an excuse to create some visually stunning scenery. I'm guessing the artist needed the break from all the dark shading that this series usually entails. The characters, at least, are done well.

Illyria has been mounted by a polar bear, and in an especially grisly scene Liandra decapitates the animal. Though enemies, they don't fight. Instead they agree to cooperate, and trek through the snow to where the mate of Illyria's blade is.

Disregarding the novelty of having this character in the book, Illyria seems to fit well. In fact, this former demon goddess, and warlord is even more interesting, and likable than the eponymous Fallen Angel. This says much about Liandra's glowering disposition. Both characters exchange retort, and say dark, over dramatic things. After a strange transition involving the cub of the beheaded polar bear, and the two women deciding to work together, Liandra exclaims that she (Liandra) has “no heart”, and adds that “[she] probably did at one time”. Since this story is relatively low in the action department, and set in bland scenery, most of the enjoyment in this book is drawn from the dialogue. Fun with language. Illyria has a cold, erudite way of speaking, where as Liandra has a more modern, brash tongue. While Illyria's vocabulary seems forced at times, she is less dramatic than Liandra, and not all that dark considering the fact she is a demon goddess. This is a good thing because the contrast between the two characters actually becomes enjoyable about half way through the book. Liandra even rattles off one, or two good, super hero one-liners.

If this run of the Fallen Angel title does survive, Peter David would do well to write Illyria in to the series as much as possible. It seems to me that this comic would surely delight the same audience that teen, vampire literature would.

6/10

Toy News: NECA Acquires WizKids Assets from Topps

The National Entertainment Collectibles Association, Inc. (NECA) has purchased the majority of the assets of WizKids, Inc. from The Topps Company, Inc., including the award-winning Clix family of games, which includes HeroClix, ActionClix, HorrorClix and SportsClix.

NECA will also acquire the WizKids brand, the Pocketmodel Game family of games, including the Pirates of the Crimson Coast, Pirates of the Spanish Main and Pirates of the Cursed Seas games, and the Mage Knight line of games.

The assets of WizKids that were purchased by NECA have been transferred to a wholly owned NECA subsidiary operating out of its offices in Hillside, New Jersey, which will operate under the WizKids name.

Clix pioneered the collectible miniature category and HeroClix has been the leading collectible game in the comic genre since its 2002 debut, due to its innovative game platform and deep collection of characters from the respective worlds of Marvel and DC Comics. NECA will continue the successful HeroClix product lines from powerhouse brands DC Comics and Marvel.

The Pocketmodel Game family of games includes the Pirates of the Cursed Seas PocketModel Trading Card Game, which is the latest in the successful line of Pirates card games that has run since selling out its first run in 2004.

“WizKids has created the best games within the collectible miniature and constructible genres and NECA is proud to help continue this great legacy,” said Joel Weinshanker, President and CEO of NECA. “The HeroClix engine is the envy of the industry and many companies have attempted to emulate it without success. We’re thrilled to deliver HeroClix to the gamers.”

NECA has hired Lax Chandra, who ran the WizKids subsidiary for The Topps Company, to be the President of NECA’s newly formed subsidiary, which will operate under the WizKids name. Former WizKids employees Chas Delong, Wade Sugiyama and Mike Elliott have also been brought on to help with the transition.

In the coming days and weeks, the new WizKids company will make further announcements about upcoming release plans.

Comics News: IDW Announces Family Circus Collection

IDW and the Library of American Comics Announces

The Family Circus Library, Volume 1

First ever chronological collection coming in November

As the 50th anniversary of this iconic strip approaches, IDW and the Library of American Comics are proud to announce that The Family Circus Library, Volume 1 will be available in November.

Creator Bil Keane debuted The Family Circus in February 1960 and for fifty years has delighted audiences worldwide with the simple humor of every day life. The endlessly curious, often too clever children and their loving, long-suffering parents capture the essence of every family.

“As a parent, I see these cartoons come to life everyday in my home,” said series editor, Scott Dunbier. “Keane’s terrific sense of humor and visual wit are evident in every panel—and with the 50th anniversary of the Family Circus on the horizon, there’s no better time to rediscover this timeless classic.”

The Family Circus Library, Volume 1 collects the classic newspaper strip in chronological order for the very first time, in beautifully designed hardcover books. Starting with the very first strip, originally published on Leap Year Day - February 29, 1960, The Family Circus Library, Volume 1 will feature a complete run of the first two years, including dailies and Sundays. Volume will also include a thoughtful essay written by Keane’s son, Christopher, accompanied by many pieces of pre-Family Circus art and family photographs. The book has been beautifully produced by Eisner award-winning designer, Dean Mullaney.

“Having truly enjoyed drawing my Family Circus cartoons, it is icing on the cake to see them now preserved in these very special volumes that will go on and on and on!” Bil Keane said. “Realizing that future generations may read the Keane family drawings that I penned so long ago is a happy bonus for this old cartoonist. I am eternally grateful.”

The Family Circus Library Volume 1 debuts in November 2009. Diamond order code SEP09 0891

Comic News: Tor announces Heavy Metal Pulp

TOR Books announces the HEAVY METAL PULP project!

PLEASURE MODEL
Netherworld: Book One

Christopher Rowley to pen the first in a new line of 21st century noir pulp novels featuring the themes and graphic styles of Heavy Metal magazine

Tor Books, an imprint of Tom Doherty Associates, LLC—the largest publisher of science fiction in the world—and Heavy Metal magazine are pleased to announce the Heavy Metal Pulp project, a line of illustrated novels that will incorporate the sensuous artistic style and graphic imagery of the iconic fantasy magazine with noir fiction stories to create a brand new series for the 21st century. Heavy Metal Pulp will partner the top illustrators and designers from Heavy Metal with today’s most talented science fiction and fantasy writers. PLEASURE MODEL, the first book in the “Netherworld” from the “Heavy Metal Pulp” project, is due out from Tor Books in February 2010.

“I grew up reading comics and pulp novels,” says Kevin Eastman, Publisher Heavy Metal Magazine. “Heavy Metal Pulp is the perfect combination of the two genres, the perfect format for science fiction, detective noir, horror, and fantasy. I’m very excited to work with Tor Books, they are an innovative company breaking new ground with this hybrid graphic novel concept.”

PLEASURE MODEL stars down-and-out police detective Rook, who gets a big break when he's assigned to a bizarre and vicious murder case. The clues are colder than the corpse and the case looks like it'll remain unsolved—until an eyewitness is discovered. But the witness is an illegal gene-grown human with no emotion or empathy—Plesur's only purpose is to provide satisfaction to her owner, in any way. When the murderer targets Plesur in order to eliminate the one witness, Rook takes her into hiding to protect her. Thus begins a descent into the dark world of exotic pleasure bots and their illicit international buyers and manufacturers as Rook frantically looks for clues. But is Rook falling under Plesur's spell . . . ?

PLEASURE MODEL is a spellbinding combination of hardboiled action and fantastic graphic art, and a perfect showcase for this exciting collaborative project from the two leading publishing partners in their respective fields. Heavy Metal Pulp is a joint venture between Heavy Metal, the world’s foremost brand for science fiction and fantasy, Red Sky Entertainment, a design/production company focused on innovative publishing content, and Tor Books.

5 Quick Questions with Dave Johnson

Dave Johnson’s stunning cover art for titles such as Detective Comics and 100 Bullets earned him the 2002 Eisner Award for Best Cover Artist.

Johnson’s graphic treatments have graced the covers of 100 Bullets since the beginning of the series, which ends in February 2009. In addition, Johnson worked on the critically acclaimed DC Elseworlds miniseries Superman: Red Son, which was nominated for a 2004 Eisner Award for Best Limited Series.

He agreed to answer 5 Quick Questions:

1) What would you say is your greatest achievement in comics?

Probably doing all the covers for 100 Bullets. I don't think I've ever done ANYTHING that long in my life. 10 years

2) Who was your favorite writer or artist that you worked with & why?

Once again, I gotta go back to 100 Bullets and say that Brian Azzarello was a dream to work with. But I also have to give credit to the editors Axel Alonso and Will Dennis for not only not getting in the way, but supporting my crazy cover ideas. And of course, Mark Chiarello for giving me the chance in the first place

3) What character you have never worked .., would you like to do & why?

I get this question a lot. The answer is none. I'm more interested in the project and what I'm going to be allowed to do on it. Some of my best work has been on books that nobody cared about and vice versa.

4) Who are your influences?

Everybody and everything. It's constantly changing. As a teenager, it started out with Byrne and Golden. But that list has grown so big it's hard to say any one artist/style has driven me into a definable direction.

5) What hero or villain would you like to change if you could and why?

If you had asked me that question about 10 to 15 years ago I could tell you. But to be honest, that stuff doesn't really factor in my way of thinking anymore. I can tell you it was fun changing Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman into Russians. Plus it's cool putting my own design stamp on Punisher right now. Hell, I guess I did something right on his skull logo because they're making t-shirts sporting the graphic.
