COMIC REVIEW: Cold Space (BOOM! Studios)

Cold Space takes place 2000 years in the future. This futuristic tale of space cowboys is about an arms dealer on the run from the galactic officials. Our hero crashes lands on a planet torn apart by civil war. This accident turns in to an opportunity for him to make some quick cash. This story is written by Samuel L. Jackson and Eric Calderon. This team is also known for their pervious story of Afro Samurai.

I find this comic a repeat of an old gun runner stories. Our hero is in need of some quick cash and conveniently after his crash landing he is surrounded by friends. This could easily be called Pulp Fiction in space. I don’t consider this a bad thing, but the first issue did not blow me away. I do have hope for this series. This story needs a lot of work on originality and character development.

The artwork puts me in mind of old Heavy Metal comics. While I was reading this I could almost hear Dio playing in the background. This is nice and basic, not a lot of elaborate colors. Each one of the character that are drawn have great detail. Samuel L. Jackson characters look like he was just put right in the pages of the comic. I give high kudos to the artist.

Dexter Morgan, recently of Miami, is now securely detained and immobilized in a sculptural facsimile limited-edition bust. He is slated for release in July.

Dexter Morgan, Miami Metro Police Department blood spatter analyst, has a double life. When he's not helping the Homicide division solve murders, he spends his time hunting and killing bad guys who slip through the justice system.

These days, America's favorite serial killer has gone from freewheeling bachelor to doting dad. Maintaining an average-guy facade while satisfying his need to kill has never been easy. But now, after being drawn into a deadly game with The Trinity Killer, a killer every bit as dangerous and conflicted as he is, last season’s shocking finale has left him dealing with the devastating consequence of his own actions.

In bringing the SHOWTIME® character, brilliantly portrayed by recent Golden Globe® and Screen Actors Guild Award® winner, Michael C. Hall, into a sculpture, Dark Horse wanted to capture both “sides” of Dexter. Their solution: viewed from the front, he is examining a blood spatter slide, as he would do in his job for the police. But danger lurks hidden behind his back, as evidenced by a razor-sharp blade.

The detailed sculpture re-creates Dexter’s signature knit shirt, right down to the weave of the fabric. The likeness of Michael C. Hall is spot-on, sculpted expressly for the Dark Horse project by the artisans at Gentle Giant Studios, who are recognized as industry leaders in the collectibles and filmed entertainment fields.

The Dexter limited-edition bust is a hand-painted, numbered edition. It is produced under license with the cooperation and participation of Showtime Networks and Michael C. Hall. It will be packaged in full-color collector packaging, and contains a Certificate of Authenticity. Release is slated for August, 2010. Fans will have the chance to see the piece in person at this weekend’s C2E2 convention in Chicago.

COMIC NEWS: PREVIEWS Next: May issue Spotlights Dark Horse’s Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom #1 and DC’s Batman: Odyssey #1

New issue arrives in comic shops April 28 and features products on sale beginning July 2010

In the 1990s, Valiant Comics’ Jim Shooter put his mark on several beloved characters originally brought to comics by Gold Key Comics. Among them was Doctor Solar. May PREVIEWS’ back cover is just as eye-catching and features DC Comics’ BATMAN: ODYSSEY #1, the first chapter of a six-part mini-series from legendary creator Neal Adams. Along with writer Dennis O’Neil, Adams added many layers to Batman for DC during the Silver Age of comics, and his fans have long waited for him to the world of the Caped Crusader. Adams gives fans their wish by serving as Odyssey’s writer and artist, telling a story that sees the Dark Knight Detective face a series of seemingly unrelated challenges. “I have an ancient cell phone given to me by a relative that's so old it can't take pictures so this tech is so far away from me it might as well be science fiction,” said Kick-Ass writer and co-creator Mark Millar. “But I read about it on Comic Book Resources and the guys seemed excited so consider me excited by osmosis. More readers and new readers is always a good thing.”

John Romita Jr, artist and co-creator of Kick-Ass, said, “I'm excited about these advances in technology that I have been hearing about for, what seems like ten years. Now it has arrived, and all I can think of is that it advances the state of ‘comic books’ in that it will direct people to the source material. I believe this will cement the tangible material, the comics themselves, into the hands and minds of future ‘young’ generations! It always comes down to the quality of writing and the sequential art. Holding a comic and turning the page for more will forever be a novelty, even with advanced technology as an option.”
