So I Married A Fanboy - My Marriage To A Comic Collector

You’d never know it by looking at me but, I’m married to a comic book geek.

All those years ago, when I met my husband, I thought “How cute, he reads comic books.” I really had no idea what I was getting myself into. We were in college, so I did not know the amount of issues his collection entailed.

He was smart by introducing me to his passion in small doses. I’d see a book here or there and he would play them off as a casual pastime. I did not realize the full extent of his love of comics until we had been together for a few months. I went to his house to meet his parents and his collection.

I had never seen anything like it in my life. In his parents’ basement were boxes and boxes of comics. He would leave me alone so that he could search through the “stacks” for what he wanted to read. It was then that I realized that I was in love with a comic book geek.

It definitely evolved from there. He would take me to the comic shop and occasionally, I would be enlisted to pick up his weekly stash. (I have to admit, at times that was scary, some of the guys in the stores would act as if they’d never seen a girl before). One thing was for sure, I never had trouble getting help there.

I have and will continue to go to comic book conventions with him (please remember to shower and use deodorant if you go). He tries to “pimp” me out, encouraging me to wear makeup when I go. Artists and writers have introduced themselves to me and I have been the go between when my husband has been too shy to talk to people himself.

And don’t tell anybody, I’ve read a few titles myself…..

Comic Review: Farscape: D'Argo's Lament #4 Review by Lisa L.

Comics have a lot of bonuses. One of the bonuses I've come to discover is they create endless story possibilities. Especially in the case of stories that seem to have ended. I've already mentioned my love of the t.v. series Farscape, and my sadness at its end. Boom! Studio's new series carries on with the stories of Moya and her crew.

Farscape: D'Argo's Lament, written by Keith R.A. Decandido and illustrated by Neil Edwards, is a 4-part series before the Peacekeeper Wars. When a deal made by Rygel to obtain orujna (a vital oil needed to keep Moya's collar-damaged skin from flaking away) dissolves, D'Argo and Jool must travel to Egrof to find it right at the source. Once there, they are caught in the middle of two warring crime lords under the impression that D'Argo is the Luxan general hired as a mercenary to shift the balance of power. When the mercenary in question turns out to be a face from D'Argo's past his mission and Moya are in jeopardy.

Issue #4 picks up with the carnage released by a mercenary Luxan and D'Argo's former superior, General Fin Sterikk. Kitrap's distillery is in flames, a move made by Sterikk to swing the balance of power in rival crime lord Esseret's favour. And now Sterikk stands between D'Argo and the orujna he needs to help Moya. Kitrap tries to convince D'Argo the answer is to strike back at Esseret, but D'Argo knows the answer is to face the General in combat.

The really great thing about this series is it focuses solely on D'Argo and Jool and opens up a little background on D'Argo in a way that couldn't really be explored in the t.v. series. The soul of the characters is there and the series is really well drawn. It's a great companion to the other comics in the Boom! Farscape series.

Comic Review: The Unknown#3 (BOOM! Studios) By John H

What you don’t know can’t hurt you, can it?

Belief is a weird thing. You either have it or you don’t. It can change or evolve over time, but it never completely goes away. To acknowledge a higher power requires a certain leap of faith, to believe in something you cannot see, a little like particle physicist‘s did before C.T.R. Wilson invented the cloud chamber, and proved the existence of atoms and nuclei. When proof will finally surface about life on other planets, what will the god fearing masses think then? What would a fact finding atheist do when shown insurmountable evidence of the supernatural?

Would you, like Catherine Allingham in The Unknown #3, try and disprove the various theories on the after life or would you just let the mystery lie, especially if you only had 6 months to live? As an atheist detective whose “faith” resides solely in the realm of science, Catherine happens unto certain individuals and events that begin to shake her beliefs.

A certain box, with the ability to judge the value of human existence, leads her and her companion on an adventure that will put her on a path fraught with danger. The path leads her to an orthodox priest who claims to have lived three hundred years since discovering a door to the underworld, while seeking treasure in a chasm.Demanding a price for intruding upon their realm, the spirits grant the unlucky spelunker immortality in exchange for being the door’s eternal guardian. This old priest believes that any form of proof of the existence of the afterlife, from the esoteric to modern science, must be destroyed. Problem is the highly sought after box is in the possession of the maniacal priest.

All this leads our dear heroine to the fabled door to the Underworld, and when she finds herself trapped on the other side with the encroaching darkness creeping upon her, questions are raised as how can she not believe what is happening around her.

A surprisingly entertaining read which I can’t wait to see the conclusion to next month.

Comic Review: Fallen Angels: Reborn #1(IDW Publishing) By John H

In a time before night and day.

Was there ever Time before time itself began? A place where the primordial powers strewed the vastness of nothing, with thoughts of life and dreams and of suns and stars? Perhaps, those Gods are gone and the one we worship is just the last of his kind? Perhaps he is a tyrant rearing us in time to be his replacements. If so, what if he wasn’t the last? What if some of his brethren were locked away in some dimensional dungeon, waiting and plotting for the seals to fall? How would they react, if they saw what once belonged to them completely usurped and changed? How would you react?

In Fallen Angels: Reborn #1, one of the Old Ones ,Illyria, returns to mourn her lost godhood, powers and her worshippers. Being set in a time before Not Fade Away (the season five series finale), Illyria remembers her last fading moments being sliced open by her own weapons, and seeing a single blade of grass standing proudly and defiantly on that plain, surviving where demon, human and deity had fallen in the Godwar.

The blade of grass had prophesized that Illyria would one day be reborn, although it forgot to mention into what form she would be revived. Who knew grass would not be omniscient? Returning from her thoughts, Illyria is greeted by a man who claims to work for old clients of the Wolfram & Hart team. He promises Illyria to return her to her former godlike self, if only she could kill someone for his clients. Illyria only has to retrieve the old blades and helm to return her powers to their proper glory. She is sent to the town of Bete Noir where the first blade lies, but soon she will come to realize she has perhaps finally met her match.

The authors of the Whedonverse never cease to amaze with great storytelling, because filling out a character like Illyria is no easy task. Keep up the good work!

Comic Review: Fall of Cthulhu: Apocalypse TPB (BOOM! Studios) By John H

When the Gods war…

How would you comprehend the unknowable? How would we as mortals fight back when out of the vastness of nothing, would appear the horror that is our collective nightmares, here to end our very existence? When the vast hordes of the Ether seek to fight amongst themselves in a race to oblivion on our home planet, how could we possibly hope to survive?

In Fall of Cthulhu: Apocalypse TPB, a rag tag groups of survivors seek to do just that. But not only just to survive, but beat the Gods at their own games. Nyarlothep is a godling who seeks to welcome back the Great Cthulhu from his long slumber, by destroying our world before his godhead awakens. There are a variety of factions, who although they are not human, nevertheless try to help our down on their luck heroes.

A Poseidon like Elder God named Noden, is responsible for the last magical slumber of the Great Cthulhu. Noden is first in line in attempting to stop Nyarlothep at his rush for planetary annihilation. A fierce struggle ensues, with the crawling chaos which is Nyarlothep being victorious by destroying the water dwelling deity’s vast army.

A cryptic and crone-like demon, by the name of the Harlot the Keeper of Secrets, offers her aid to the characters, whom both fear and mistrust her. With the Keeper’s aid, the courageous protagonists are able to travel to another dimension in order to carry out their mission…but at what cost?

This book brings all the mythos of the Lovecratian genre to bear remarkably well. Each individual panel is full of oddities, beasts and demons straight out of any nightmarish hell. It sets the tone for when the reader is finally face to face with the vastness that is Cthulhu…an event which does not disappoint!

This collection is great …or is it but a beginning to a new saga?

Comic review: Poe #1(BOOM! Studios) by John H

When Haunted by the past…

To see death, and those that reside on the other side, could be considered a dream to some and a nightmare for others. What if you can’t control the visions? If the dead come to talk and ask for favors, or ask for revenge? And amidst all this, what if you were haunted by the vision of your passing wife, the love of your life, called on by the Grim Reaper? Would you stay sane? Could you? Would you even want to?

In Poe #1, this series of unfathomable circumstances occurs to one of America’s most beloved authors, Edgar Allen Poe. In the first issue, we are set upon the path of a young man who has just lost his wife, and he cannot rest for fear I believe of missing her soul. Locked in an insane asylum, he is constantly haunted by the figure of a small girl, who took her life several years before his own internment.

Having grown tired of Edgar Allen Poe’s bothersome attitude, the nuns request Edgar’s younger brother to please take their patient away. This is where we are treated to Edgar savvy and intellect, for you see Edgar’s brother is a constable for the city of Baltimore and the police have discovered a slew of new murders. Having written a few books on a certain detective, Edgar is surprised to notice things he constables seem to take for granted.

After demonstrating to the assembled police corps several piece of evidence they had not taken into account, Edgar asks his brother if he may help him on the case. Eventually his brother acquiesces, and the two are off quickly following the path of clues Mr. Poe had assembled at the murder scene. However, very soon they realize this case is much more than it seems, when supernatural elements seem to pop up more and more frequently. The murders it seems are centered on five roman coins of the Augustus Denarus denomination, and all but one of the owners is dead.

It's always nice to be surprised by a book, and this one with its Sherlock Holmes overtones is my new favorite of the moment. This is an awesome story that kept me turning the pages till the very end. The artist uses his colors to full gloriously lugubrious effect. A must have for murder and mystery enthusiasts!

TYRESE GIBSON's MAYHEM and Image Comics announce their presale efforts through a partnership with Los Angeles, CA's Meltdown Comics have exceeded single store records not seen since the early nineties with over ten thousand units sold.

"The success of MAYHEM is a golden opportunity for all retailers to tap into this new influx of readers and in-store foot traffic that Tyrese brings with him,” Meltdown owner Gaston Dominguez said. “Tyrese is a 2.0 celebrity who is a marketing workhorse and whose brand spans across movies, music, and TV. Team MAYHEM are in it to win it! They are sincere and want to put out good products that cater to their fan base and beyond. Image is looking forward to having a long sustained run with him on MAYHEM and some of the other ideas he's talked about for the future."

TYRESE GIBSON'S MAYHEM has not only been pushed by Gibson's own efforts through Twitter and his personal outreach to comics retailers, but its also been the center of a world wide publicity campaign tied into his starring role in the recent blockbuster film, Transformers 2. Thus far MAYHEM has been featured by CNN, MTV, The Today Show, Complex, USA Today, E!'s Chelsea Lately, Access Hollywood, Essence, among many others. The tour continues as Gibson, along with MAYHEM's artist, Tone Rodriguez, and co-writers, Mike Le and Will Wilson, will be in attendance during this month's San Diego Comic Con International at Image Comics, booth #2729. MAYHEM is fresh, fun and most importantly, from the heart."

Comic Review: Red Robin #2(DC Comics) By Eddie R

Dealing with loss..

Red Robin #2 continues the four part “The Grail” storyline, where Tim Wayne is on the hunt for his missing adoptive father, Bruce Wayne. Of course Tim isn’t the only one looking for Bruce. Now joining in the hunt is Ra's al Ghul, whose motives are still unclear.

But now, another group has taken interest in Tim’s adventure. It seems the rest of the Batman Family has realized Tim has gone on this quest, and is trying to contact him via any means necessary, in order to stop Tim in this pursuit. They even send an emissary to try to convince Tim to come home and talk. But in Tim’s mind, the time for talk is over, and action is what’s needed. And there is defiantly enough of that to go around in this issue.

On the other hand, the talk which I do find affective is the self narrative Tim does throughout the book. It gives us an insight into the mind of a man, who is just trying to preserve what is left of the world he knows, after such a tragic loss. grief does strange things to people. It can make them irrational, unpredictable, and unreceptive to what’s really going on around them. But grief can also be a healing process, a time where one goes and looks for answers, both inwards and outwards, and allows a person to find the inner strength to deal with situations, which they never thought they had in the first place. I find this book is showing both sides of the effects of grief on equal footing. I feel Red Robin is Tim’s way of dealing with the loss of Bruce. But is also the means to find the answers, so Tim can have some sort of closure.

I just hope Tim doesn’t lose himself while on this quest. Because I defiantly loose myself every time I read this book.

Comic News: IDW Announces Yoe! Books

Publishing company to release Craig Yoe books under new imprint

First book releasing in fall, 2009

Yoe is coming to IDW! On the heels of the media frenzy surrounding his highly-acclaimed new book, Secret Identity: The Fetish Art of Superman's Co-Creator Joe Shuster, IDW is proud to announce Yoe! Books, a new imprint that will publish numerous books by the author, editor and designer Craig Yoe, beginning with The Art of Ditko, a large-format book and The Complete Milt Gross Life Story and Comic Books, both releasing this fall. Ditko features little-seen stories and original artwork and an introduction by Stan Lee. Milt Gross sports a FOLD-INtroduction by Mad magazine's Al Jaffee and scarce ephemera and comics. These first two offerings foretell the genre-spanning range of Yoe! Books.

"IDW is committed to expanding our book collections, and continuing to offer readers a wide variety of unique and historical material," said Greg Goldstein, IDW's chief operating officer. "We're excited to be the home of Craig's imprint, Yoe! Books, highlighting unknown geniuses and revelatory books on well-known names."

Co-founder of YOE! Studio, Eisner Award-winner Yoe is highly-regarded throughout the entertainment industry for his creative and out-of-the-box books, which often focus on historical comic art. Yoe! Books at IDW will release many such books, starting with The Art of Ditko, which boasts an introduction by Lee. Ditko showcases the best of this seminal artist, who co-created Spider-Man and Dr. Strange with Lee and includes the artist's most innovative and rare stories, original art presented in full color and essays by Jerry Robinson, John Romita, and P. Craig Russell.

A ground-breaking Jewish cartoonist, Milt Gross was a celebrity in his time, capping his career with hilarious stories for the comic book industry. Yoe! Books will commemorate the life of this great cartoonist with The Complete Milt Gross Life Story and Comic Books, reprinting every one of his rare comic book tales, plus offering a career-spanning biography based on interviews with those who knew and worked with him.

"I'm looking forward to spitting on my hands, pulling on my briefs, and tag-teaming with IDW. Together, we're going to wrestle some great books to the ground," said Yoe. "With my good looks and IDW's beefy muscle, we make a winning team."
