Plans to party with Kirby Krackle and The Fuglees, tattoo a lucky fan and release new Witchblade fragrances!
All in the name of charity!
C2E2 – short for the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo – is the latest convention spanning the greatest in the worlds of comics and pop entertainment. Hero Initiative, the non-profit organization raising money for comic creators in hard times, will be joining in the fun April 16-18 at the Lakeside Center McCormick Place in Chicago, IL. Action-packed weekend festivities include artists such as Adam Kubert sketching for fans, parties at nearby Reggie’s Rock Club, auctioning off a custom tattoo, and premiering new fragrances. And it all happens in the middle of the best gathering of popular culture in downtown Chicago!
The most generous and talented Adam Kubert will sketch four—only four!—drawings the whole weekend at C2E2, and will do these exclusively for Hero. Raffle tickets to purchase these coveted gems will be available at the booth Friday and Saturday morning for $1 each. Winning tickets will be picked at 2:30 pm on Saturday. Each sketch will be $250. All proceeds will go directly to Hero Initiative.
We'll try just about anything to raise money, and so will Ink Fusion tattoo artist Brian Stringer! You can also purchase $5 raffle tickets to get a tat from Brian designed by Marvel Comics all-star artist Ron Garney! Tickets will be available all day Friday and until 12:45 on Saturday at both the Hero and Ink Fusion booths. Drawing takes place at the Hero booth Saturday at 1 PM. Ron will be signing at the Hero Initiative booth from 1-3 PM on Saturday, and will draw the winning ticket himself and create the winner’s design. The raffle winner will get his (or her) tattoo from Brian Stringer at 11 AM on Sunday. For full details, see: http://tinyurl.com/y2jp97g
Enjoy the con during the day, but make sure you spend your evenings at Reggie's Rock Club, 2109 S. State St.! It's only about four blocks from the convention center, but FREE shuttle buses decked out with demons and skulls will be running between the con and Reggie's! Events include:
Saturday night, 7:00 PM, KIRBY KRACKLE and THE FUGLEES! Kirby Krackle features comic store owner and convention promoter Jim Demonakos, while the Fuglees are fronted by artist Andy Kuhn! $5 cover at the door for this event. The party continues following the show with live art, music played by various DJs and dancing SHOJO SHOWGIRLS. The parties don’t stop ’til 3 AM!
In addition all day Sunday at Reggie’s, the Custom PopCult Art Show features the work of SHAWNIMALS, JIM MAHFOOD, JOSH BLAYLOCK, STEVE SEELEY, JOEY POTTS, MIKE HUDDLESTON and a host of others, all doing their own custom versions of Drippy, the PopCult mascot. 25% of the money goes to Hero, and the rest to the hard-working artists. In Addition, everyone's favorite parody news source, THE ONION will be on hand with their Pop Culture trivia, and harvesting photos of volunteers for use in their articles. Yes, YOU could be "Area Nerd" in a future The Onion piece.
Also at Reggie’s on Sunday form Noon to 2:00pm, Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab will hold a "Meet-’n'-Sniff"! The scent-makers at BPAL will be debuting a NEW Witchblade scent at C2E2, and even if you can't make the scene at the con, swing by to meet up with other Black Phoenix fans and sniff and trade scents!

INITIATIVE AUCTIONS OFF TOM BREVOORT ‘TAKE MY TRADE’ BOOKS
Yea, verily! Almost 50 Stan Lee-signed books on eBay!
The trading is over…so let the bidding begin!
Marvel Comics Editor Tom Brevoort brought trading back into comic collecting with his yearlong “Take My Trade” program that took place on his blog at Marvel.com. Tom wanted to see if he could trade all the way up to a vaunted Fantastic Four #1 if he swung the right deals with fans…and he did! When it was all said and done, Tom decided to donate the books he traded for along the way to a worthy cause—the Hero Initiative.
Hero got Marvel founder Stan Lee—and in some cases, legendary Marvel artist John Romita as well—to autograph all the books, which will be auctioned off starting Monday, February 22, at 1 PM Eastern time. Approximately 10 books per week will be auctioned at via Hero’s eBay page at http://qurls.com?i=48837 until all 48 books are gone!
All books—including the Fantastic Four #1 as well!—have been graded by CGC, Comics Guarantee Corporation, and have encapsulated as part of their prestigious Signature Series. All books will also come with a Certificate of Meaninglessness from Brevoort, noting that they were part of “Take My Trade.”
“It was outstanding and humbling to experience the extreme generosity that comic fans showed both by taking part in this fun little trading event, and by giving far more than they asked for in return. I think that’s a testament to the power of the good work the Hero Initiative has been doing to help comics creators of years past who’ve fallen down on their luck—Marvel fans were much more motivated to participate knowing that the end goal was to give back to some of the talents that entertained us all over the years. Now my great hope is that these books generate a staggering amount of capital to continue that good work—so come on, get in there and bid, generously!” sais Brevoort.

About Ed Hannigan
Ed was born August 6, 1951 in Newport, Rhode Island, the first of what would become eight children. His dad was an officer in the U.S. Navy, and later an engineer/sales executive for Tidewater Oil (later to become Getty Oil). He grew up throughout the Northeast, where his grandmother used to give him comic books. With their help, he learned to read at a young age, particularly impressed with World's Finest, featuring Superman and Batman.
Ed soon became a Marvel fanatic, and was determined to draw comic books some day. In high school in Ashland, Massachusetts he practiced drawing constantly and produced comics of his own. He also illustrated the senior yearbook. In 1971, after moving to New Jersey, he managed to wrangle an invitation to visit Marvel Comics’ offices. He showed his art samples to the folks there—Marie Severin, Mike Esposito, Herb Trimpe and others. They were polite, but less than impressed. But he still kept coming around. Then one day Sol Brodsky needed someone to do some lettering corrections on the British weekly reprint series, Mighty World of Marvel. Ed volunteered and for a short while, became a letterer.
Sol then needed someone to do some zip-a-tone shading on the same reprint line. Ed and Klaus Janson took on that job and were friendly rivals for a while as they shaded photostats of old Spider-Man, Fantastic Four and Thor stories. But Ed did not give up on drawing comics, practicing and learning from the pros at Marvel. Eventually he was allowed to do some sketches for those same British reprints and finally was given a Planet of the Apes cover to draw. After that he started helping Art Director John Romita to design covers for other artists and occasionally himself to draw. He also illustrated some stories. By and by, Ed became the busiest comic cover sketch artist in the place. At one time or another he did cover designs for just about every comic in the line.
Ed tried to tailor cover designs to the style of whichever artist was going to do the final art, but he also introduced some trademark features of his own, most famously, "messing with the logo" in some way or another, destroying or distorting it. The sketches became more elaborate and often were fully colored. He continued to draw some stories ands even wrote a few (Defenders was his longest run), but cover sketches were his mainstay for the next several years, and that's what he is best known for in the industry.
When the comics business contracted in the early 1990s, Ed was forced to find other employment. He end up doing computer graphics for a publisher in Massachusetts for nine years. Hero Initiative and Marvel Comics
Proudly present
The Invincible Gene Colan
With more than 65 years at the drawing board, Gene Colan proved himself to be Marvel's most dedicated, and one of its most important artists. Now Hero Initiative and Marvel Comics have created a breathtaking collection that looks back at Colan’s important career and phenomenal work as no other volume has before. The Invincible Gene Colan is a 128-page hardcover book that showcases Gene’s amazing art, and includes important analysis from Stan Lee, Roy Thomas, John Romita, Walter Simonson, Neil Gaiman, Tom Spurgeon and Tom Palmer.
Originally solicited as a softcover, The Invincible Gene Colan is now a hardcover, at the same price of $19.99. Net proceeds will benefit Gene Colan. The book can be ordered in the Hero Initiative section of Diamond Previews, using order code DEC090880. Orders must be in by December 24, 2008, and the book will be in-stores February, 2010. Through special arrangement with Marvel Comics, there will be only ONE printing of this book EVER.
“As a fiction writer in the early 1990s, I had the profound good fortune of seeing Gene Colan illustrate several of my stories,” said book Editor Clifford Meth. “Then, last year, Gene contacted me with the hopes of finally retiring. That call sparked the genesis of this book. The Invincible Gene Colan is a lasting and long-overdue tribute to perhaps the greatest master to touch the comic art form. Gene Colan is the Bob Dylan of visual storytelling. He is quite simply without peer.”
"It's quite an honor to have the most iconic, respected and beloved comic book company, Marvel Comics, publish a book honoring my career,” said Gene Colan. “It was apparent from the time I was a young boy that I had talent drawing. As I grew older, I began to sharpen my skills and point them in the direction of comics, my passion. Since 1946 it's been a thrill for me to be part of the Marvel family. And it really is a family! The Invincible Gene Colan is the culmination of a 63 year relationship with Marvel. I'm deeply grateful!"
Please place your orders with your favorite retailer immediately. You will not want to miss out on adding this amazing collection.
