Finding Nemo Reef Rescue #2 (BOOM! Kids)

I’m starting to like it...




Every one has seen Finding Nemo (The best selling DVD of all time). And it’s only right to make toys, games, clothing, and comics related to it. I’m sure we are all hoping for a sequel, but until then we have Finding Nemo Reef Rescue!

In #1 of Reef Rescue Marlin and his son Nemo discover that the coral is changing colour and dying so along with Dory they volunteer to find out what is happening. In Reef Rescue #2 they meet up with Nemos old friend Gil, who gives them some advice. They discover what is happening to the coral but they still don’t know how to stop it.

Like most, this is a beautifully drawn comic. Nemo's small fin, Gil’s scars, and everything else you saw in the movie, is also in the comic. Not one thing is left out. It’s full of colours! Red orange yellow green and blue are everywhere. You learn about the characters right from the start, and their facial expressions keep coming.

When I read #1 I was a bit skeptical. As I read about aliens and superheroes I’m constantly reading and looking at the pictures. I take no breaks, I never stop to think about the hard work that was put into it, and I never put it down half way. When I was reading Reef Rescue #1, I stopped. I had a coffee, maybe thought a bit about it. When I read #2 I didn’t stop I didn’t hesitate. I read the whole thing from start to finish as I would with another comic. I really like this one. Maybe #1 was a slow start because now I can’t wait to read #3.

I was not one bit disappointment with this comic book either. If I could change one thing it would be to make it longer. At one point in the comic I doubted what had happened, “Pfft ya right!” but I think back on it now and remember that it’s made mainly for the children.

If you want to introduce your children to comics I recommend you buy this for them, read it to them. It’s totally rated G. It's cute and funny, and easy to read and understand.

This is a great comic. I’d purchase 1-4 in a heartbeat. If you’re a fan of Finding Nemo, I recommend you buy this. If you have children, or if you just want to read this, I recommend it. Its fun, easy to read, and exciting! I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it, and you could be too. Great book!

Zombie Tales 2061 TPB (Boom!)

A whole different take on zombies

So, I know a lot about zombies. Im prepared, and I read about them lots. But this comic was a little different. The zombies rule, and use the humans as slaves!? I can see it happening, and I kind of dig it. But either way, I didn’t like this comic one bit.




This single comic is a VERY short recap on the series. And it all goes so fast. I was bored! I wasn’t very interested in reading the rest, although i did. Not exciting, not fun and not long. The comic tells enough so you can figure out what’s happening and how the story goes, but nothing more.

I did like the art though, I really did. But i did notice a lack of facial expressions on the humans. Very sketchy at times, but i did really like it. The zombies interact and communicate with each other, own stores, homes...i liked the ‘different’ look towards them.
I would NOT recommend this. It’s short and boring and unsatisfying. But it is a recap on the series, so it’s not as great as another comic you may read. I didn’t like it though; I found that it lacked everything a real comic had.

Comic Review: Last Resort #1 (IDW Comics) Review by Oliver C.

Last Resort #1 IDW

It’s only the beginning

Zombies originated in the Afro-Caribbean long long ago, and later hit the world hard thanks to the film ‘Night of the Living Dead’. Movies, video games, storeys, and comic books have taken the mythical reanimated corpses into their own hands, and have shown the world their way of seeing these monsters. Everybody has a different theory about zombies and how they act, eat, and move, and so on. Last Resort #1 just hints as much as it can at this series being all about zombies.




The book starts off with an infected human in a raft who makes it to the shore. But the shore is the beach....and you can guess what happens from there. And in the other half of the comic it tells the story of a few different people all eventually boarding the same airplane.

This is a well drawn beautiful comic like most, and a lot of people up to proportion as well as great character development. You learn lots about the people described in the comic.

I LOVE zombies just about as much as I love comics, but when he two come together I am just filled with joy. It’s been a while since I’ve read a good zombie comic and this one isn’t all that great either, but it only tells me that the next will be better. I liked the blood and how no one was afraid of adding some swears and nudity to the comic.

I didn’t at all like some of the long speech bubbles in this book, but they have to be read for the reader to fully understand the rest of the comic, right? The comic did move a little slow, but it had to be done, lots was explained.

This comic is rated R. Boobs. Swears. Sex. And more boobs. Of course all the nudity wasn’t very necessary and neither were the swears, but in reality that would have happened. So you can blame ‘em for adding those just to make it a little more believable. Do NOT read this one to your kids.

By looking at he cover of this comic you can pretty tell what it’s about and also the title “Last Resort” helps with that too. The comic moves so with not a lot of excitement but does tell a lot. #1 Issues usually don’t have a lot happening in them, because they have to tell the story and foreshadow. You need to know what you will be expecting in the next issue. The most excitement lies in the cliff-hanger ending, that I was surprised to read.

I recommend this comic to people over the age of 18.

Sinister Spider-Man #1 Out of 4 (Marvel Comics)

Just what I’ve been hungry for

Sinister Spider-Man #1 (out of 4) is on hell of a comic book. I loved it. I loved it. I loved it. Sometime after Norman Osborn had became the most powerful man in the country Gargan had bonded with the symbiote and became “The New Spider-Man”. Norman also gave him a position in his own team of Avengers. Long story short: He fights crime..... And then eats them.




You may know Gargan as the low-life who Spider-Man fought and put in the can, or you could know him as the genetically engineered super-human, The Scorpion. But none of that matters to him anymore because he kind of digs this new spider-man thing. And the best part is the fact that he can eat on the job, get the ladies and have fun, all while getting paid for it.

This comic has everything! It starts out when a swastika-wearing criminal dressed in a wolf costumes robs what looks like a bank. Gargan catches him and well, eats his arm. After some more of that, he has some more fun by picking up a hooker. After some more excitement a new character is introduced. The Redeemer, who looks similar to the punisher. The Redeemer wants to hunt down Gargan and (Duh) redeem him.

In my opinion this comic takes it just a little bit over the top, and has some much unexpected plots twists in it. I like that. It makes me sad to think that I’m only going to buy and read here more of these. $3.99 US/CAN is not a bad price, but it’s not all that good either. The point is that it doesn’t cost any extra than another standard comic book. Its rated T+ so don’t read this to your children.

This was just a great comic and I’ve already had a few dreams about issue two. I recommend this, even if you don’t like Spider-Man (if that’s the case you should go stick your head in a hole and get stuck there with your hands tied behind your back).

Finding Nemo, Reef Rescue #1 out of 4 (BOOM! Kids)

This one is for the kids.

I’m starting to think that maybe if I was 5 years old, I would’ve liked this comic better. There are two ways to look at this book: It’s a comic or it’s a kid comic. From my point of view comparing this to the comics I read every day, it was awful and boring. But you have to remember the fact that it was written for kids.




I saw the movie Finding Nemo, and I liked it. This comic has all the same main characters, including the cute little turtle named Bert. It’s full of fun and surprisingly it made me laugh once or twice. Since this is only the first out of four comics the main conflict is introduced but NOT resolved. If you read this comic you will have to read the other three to find out what happens. The comic is true to the movie, but only as true as it could get.

The coral is sick and Nemo and his father Marlin accompanied by Dory, go embark on an adventure to find out what is making the coral ill and to make it better again. The most excitement in this comic is Dory constantly popping up from behind them and frightening Nemo and his father. Unless you are trying to find a fun comic to read to your children or if you are extremely obsessed with Finding Nemo, I suggest finding something else. I think this would be great to introduce your children to comics, or help them along the way to reading the big titles.

This comic is funny, but no more exciting than giving your grandmother a sponge bath only to find out that she invited a few of her friends over to get cleaned as well. And you’re all alone to do it yourself too. Like I said: If you are looking for a comic for your child/children this is great. But if you want something exciting and not 5-year-old-exciting then please, buy something else. I recommend this to kids.

I.M.O. Review: Justice Society of America # 28 (DC Comics) By Eddie R

As real as it gets

To me, this issue of Justice Society is exactly why I like the series. Even though sometimes it does get bogged down with either some very campy storylines, or polar opposite ones which have darker overtones, there is one thing which is consistent: It feels real and believable.




Justice Society of America # 28 opens with the dramatic exit of the Spectre and the rest of the JSA, who are crossing over to a limbo, where the missing JSA members from the previous issue are being held by Kung. The way the news media, outside the JSA headquarters, acts when they see this grand exit is exactly what I would expect to happen. I mean, it’s kind of hard to ignore a pink elephant in the room, especially if he’s The Spectre.

As for the JSA members who were abducted, they are having a hard time trying to figure out if they really have been transported to the middle of the Second World War, or is it just an illusion created by Kung? All their senses say that this feels real, but is it? And if it is, will this adventure do any damage to the timeline?

The best part of this issue for me was the revelation of how Kung and the Spirits got out of their limbo in the first place. I enjoyed seeing how a previous storyline was tied into this one, and how the spirits escape route was well planned out. Even the vessel, which Kung chose once as a means of convenience, seemed to feel appropriate. Although I am surprised at how out of all the members of the Marvel Family, Kung chose the oldest and most unreliable. No wonder he had to change bodies again.

Another highlight for me was to see the Spectre return to the JSA. There is just something electric about him which feels right when he is working with this group. And I feel that it is this spark which is the only thing lacking in the JSA roster. With so many new recruits coming aboard, I guess I long for a touch of something familiar.

The end of the story is a bit heartbreaking though , as Atom Smasher tells Stargirl something which she doesn’t want to hear, but must accept. Atom Smasher must accept the reality of this situation also, but you can tell that even though the story might say “The End” in the final panel on the page, it feels like it really isn’t in this case.

Comic Explosion G.I. JOE Movie Adaptation #1 (IDW Comics) Review by Oliver C.

Official G.I. Joe Rise of the Cobra Movie Adaptation #1 IDW

Action packed and loaded!

I never read any of the old G.I. Joe comics nor watched the TV. show but I am excited to see the new movie one on top of that: to read the rest of the comics.




This comic starts off slow, with talk about a new weapon to make war ‘safer’ and it slowly introduces a few characters. While a package is being transported and protected by a special elite nato unit, enemies attack and try to steal it. This is where it gets good. Neck breaking, sword slicing, and lots and lots of explosions. Not to mention the very sexy Ana.

The action in this really seemed to explode from the pages, and the characters were instantly part of me. Almost everything in this comic was well done. In the beginning I was just utterly confused. I seemed to get distracted and bored. I did know that these boring parts were crucial for the rest of the book, if I didn't read the first half I wouldn't understand the other.

Ill say it once more: The killing and explosions were awesome! The many things going on make you look over the frames more than once. This issue #1 of G.I. Joe really seems to promise a good series about to unfold.

The story moves along quickly and it’s not at all hard to follow. The artwork is nice (as always) and a beautifully done front cover. If you ever read or watched the old G.I. Joe comics/cartoons I can’t tell you if this comic here is anything compared to the original. But for those of you who are hoping to get this comic and learn about G.I. Joe for the first time I recommend this.

This is no better or worse than a normal comic book, nor is it very exciting or suspenseful. But remember: it’s only the first issue, and it will get better. I liked it, and I would like to read more to come.

Comic Explosion: Aliens #1 (Dark Horse Comics) Review By Oliver C.

A Great Start for a Great Comic

ALIENS #1 Dark Horse Comics

I’ve always loved the Alien series, and this new comic by dark horse has really brought back some not-so-far-away memories. I finished this short comic book in only a matter of minutes, but it was so good I went back to read it again.




There are two available covers: the daylight cover and the night time cover. And it’s slightly cheaper than the other comics at my local store ($3.50) as well as thicker. The book itself is very over-loaded with ads though.

This was a regular read through observing our everyday heroes do their work. And like most comics, this one kept me reading and left my eyebrows half an inch higher than they usually are at the end. Not much excitement is printed inside this comic, but it is full of surprises. I think this is a great start for this new exciting series, and I hope to read even better books of this series in the future.

Aliens #1 was great and I would recommend it to any fan of the Alien series, or if you just like to read comics.
