ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND: THE POP WONDERLAND SERIES

Michiyo Hayano (W) and POP (A)

On sale Mar 24
FC, 40 pages
$16.99
HC, 10 1/8" x 8 1/4"

Lewis Carroll’s universally known story of a little girl who falls down a rabbit hole into a magical wonderland is given a new spin in this lushly illustrated version of the classic tale.

Alice was sitting in a field reading when a white rabbit scampered by. She didn’t know what was odder: that the rabbit was running on its hind legs, wearing a jacket, and carrying a pocket watch, or that it was talking, shouting, “I’m late! I’m late!” From the moment she decided to follow the rabbit into his rabbit hole, Alice was transported to a fantastical place called Wonderland, where anything was possible. All of the familiar characters are here: the Hatter, the March Hare, the Cheshire Cat, the Caterpillar, and the wicked Queen of Hearts.

• A new line of children’s storybooks, the POP Wonderland series is rendered in a friendly pastel palette, with engaging art that brings familiar fairy tales to life in a
brand-new way.

• Parents know their children love anime and manga, and the art style in these books will connect with moms and dads looking to get their child a book drawn in a modern style, yet telling a story they can identify with from their own childhoods.

A centuries-old interstellar conflict threatens humanity’s very existence as a long-lost Predator clan stakes its claim for galactic dominance, intent on exterminating its rival clan, the selfsame trophy hunters who have plagued Earth’s history and every world they have touched. And if the advanced technology and military precision of this new threat weren’t enough, they have an even more terrifying weapon at their disposal—Aliens, weaponized and under their malefic control. This puts earthmen in the dangerous position of parlaying with the same alien warriors who have relentlessly hunted them, and who better to carry out the negotiations than Machiko Naguchi, the only human known to have spent time alongside the Hunters.

• Features the creative team of original AvP writer Randy Stradley and penciller Rick Leonardi (Cloak and Dagger, Uncanny X-Men, Vigilante), and stunning cover art by Raymond Swanland (Aliens, Predator).

TV News: Cartoon Network Enterprises Expands Publishing Program for Ben 10 Alien Force

Scholastic to Publish Novelizations, Handbooks and More for Hit Boys Action Series,
While Modern Publishing Renews Deal for Color and Activity Books

Reading just got a lot more action-packed as Cartoon Network Enterprises (CNE) announced today an expanded publishing program for its leading boys brand, Ben 10 Alien Force. The global licensing and merchandising arm for the television network has signed Scholastic, which will publish a full line of readers, novelizations, handbooks and chapter books for Ben 10 Alien Force. The new publishing program will be launched across all tiers of retail this fall. Scholastic joins Modern Publishing, which recently renewed its deal with CNE for color and activity books based on Ben 10 Alien Force, and Del Ray Manga, an imprint of Random House, for manga and cine-manga that is currently available at retailers nationwide.

“We have had great success with the Ben 10 publishing program thanks to the rich content from the series and expansiveness of the Ben 10 universe,” said Christina Miller, senior vice president of CNE. “As Ben 10 continues to take root as an evergreen brand in the boys action category, having strong programs in place with the right partners will continue to be critical to our ongoing success, and adding Scholastic to our roster is a tremendous opportunity to deepen our publishing product for the brand.”

“We are thrilled to add Ben 10 to our licensed publishing list and to continue our successful relationship with Cartoon Network,” said Debra Dorfman, VP, Publisher for paperbacks, novelty and licensing, Scholastic Trade book publishing. “Ben’s world, complete with aliens, adventure, and mystery, is rich with the best kind of storytelling that Scholastic looks for in a successful book series for young readers.”

As a top-rated Cartoon Network original series for boys, Ben 10 Alien Force continues the Ben 10 saga and picks up the story five years later when 15-year-old Ben Tennyson chooses to once again put on the OMNITRIX and discovers that he can now transform him into 10 brand new aliens. Anchored by a full toy line from Bandai America, the Ben 10 Alien Force product line also includes apparel, interactive, home entertainment, consumer electronics and more.

Created by Man of Action and produced at Cartoon Network Studios, the third season of the Ben 10 Alien Force series recently debuted on Cartoon Network and currently premieres on Friday nights 8:30 a.m. (ET/PT) with replays throughout the week, and the highly-anticipated live action movie, Ben 10 Alien Swarm will debut on the network in November.

The special Star Wars: The Clone Wars premiere event on Friday, Oct. 2 will feature all-new back-to-back episodes starting at 8 p.m. (ET/PT).

During the special presentation, Cartoon Network will feature an exclusive sneak peek, as well as an insiders’ tip for the Wii™ version of the game. MySims™ Agents will also be featured in co-branded premiere on-air tune-ins on Cartoon Network leading into the programming event. Last season, EA offered viewers a code to help viewers play the new game at the time, SimCity™ Creator.

“Following up on a record-setting first season, we could not be more excited to have EA on board again as our exclusive promotional partner for the second season premiere of Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” said John O’Hara, executive vice president and general sales manager of Cartoon Network and Adult Swim Ad Sales and Marketing.

By recruiting different MySims, each with their own special skills, players can build up their very own crime-busting dream team. From tracking footprints and using forensics to picking locks, hacking into computers, following leads, and collecting clues, players must rely on their wits, skills, and trusty gadgets to piece together the clues to solve mysteries. Jump aboard a private jet to reach an ancient temple, a spooky mansion, a seedy industrial section of the city, a sunshine filled beach boardwalk, or an icy mountaintop chalet. Each clue you uncover will lead you closer to the sinister Morcubus. Return from their adventures with cool treasures that can be used to construct and customize your five story headquarters. In MySims Agents on Nintendo DS™, players are agents assigned by their agency to help the mayor stop a notorious thief from stealing an ancient treasure. Comic Review: Star Trek- Romulans: Schism #2 (IDW Publishing) by Ed Rondo

In technology we trust....

Star Trek- Romulans: Schism #2 continues the high pace cat and mouse game between the Romulan’s/ Klingon’s and the Federation already established in Issue #1. Our Heroine, the former Number one under Captain Christopher Pike, who is now a Commodore and in command of the U.S.S Yorktown, is before the Federation Council in a last ditch effort to try to persuade the council members into finding an alternative method to using the stolen Romulan cloaking technology, in order to bring about a less brutal solution to the escalating crisis near the Neutral zone. Falling upon deaf ears, The Commodore and the crew of the U.S.S Yorktown are dispatched to a Federation listening post along the border of the Neutral Zone, where they will get a chance to see if the technological gamble the Federation has taken will prove effective in preventing war.

Meanwhile on Romulus, the current Praetor embarks on a tour to inspect the newest ship in the Romulan fleet, one that might possibly tip the scales in favor of a Romulan victory over not only the Federation, but the Klingon’s as well. All the while, a fleet of Romulan ships near the Neutral zone finally make their presence known, hoping to force the hand of the Federation into a fully fledged conflict.

If anything, I think the general theme of this issue would be “faith in technology”. The way the Romulans and the Federation are being shown to have bestowed total confidence in each others technological achievements, reminds me of another famous Star Trek TOS episode “A Private Little War”. In that episode the crew of the U.S.S Enterprise discovers the Klingon’s interfering with development of a peaceful race, by providing them with advanced weapons technology, in order for them to defeat their enemy. This soon turns into an arms race, and Captain Kirk must provide the other side with firearms just as equal in order to level the playing field. It’s nice to know that Mr. Byrne is never at a loss at showing how these themes are still as valid today’s as they were 40 years ago.

As usual the artwork is meticulous & exquisite, full of enough details to make any Trek fan giggle like a school girl with glee. The color scheme for me is what sets the tone. It’s spot on for the time this is set in, and invokes a sense of nostalgia each and every time.

However, my only complaint would have to be the following: Does anyone else think it’s about time The Commodore (and former Number One) got a name? I mean it’s fine if this is not addressed here, but if it was, that would be some pretty sweet icing on an already decadent cake.

Comic Review: Angel #26 (IDW Publishing) by John H.

You’re an Angel in disguise…

I am a great fan of continuity. I love when certain glimpse is given within stories that wink to the audience saying “let’s see if you guys remember this!” I find that Joss Whedon does this more than any other creator. During the TV run of Buffy and Angel, we the viewers were given many winks and hints to let us in on the big picture, as if we were in fact part of the gang. I believe this is why most of us became such strong fans of the Whedonverse, we were all somehow involved.

The same can be said today in the comic book incarnation of Angel, where constant references to the past and even winks to Buffy are choc-full of brilliance. In Angel # 26, Angel and his brood are basically in hell: no not the Living Hell they have been through for the past several months, another more horrible type of hell...A comic book convention! Now wait and hear me out! This may seem like a bliss filled Paradise for some of us…but it really is a hellhole for them. Cause when you see caricatures of our heroes basically rampaging around, being imitating badly, and then add to that a magic spell which…well all I will say is just think back to the first season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, around the time of Halloween, and you’ll get a good glimpse at what surprises may be in store.

I found this to be a great light read, with no effect on any of the ongoing stories here. Basically it’s just a little bit of fun, just like old times. The art is the same great style we have been privy to, but when reading, just take a little look away from the main action in this issue, and check out the backgrounds. I will guarantee you’ll see a few nods to other Pop Culture characters and comic book series that will surely please more than a few fan boys out there!

I really loved this one! Hope you will too!
