Toy News: A Tale of Two Aprils

The figure so nice we made her twice!

You might recall back at SDCC we had our exclusive April O'Neil figure in a blue costume. Well, there's more in store for everyone's favorite TMNT heroine, because NECA is happy to reveal that April is going yellow and green!

Whether you prefer the April O'Neil computer programmer from the original Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman comics (on which this sculpt is based) or the reporter from the children's cartoon, there's no denying she's one of the most memorable characters in the world of TMNT. Able to rescue just as often as she needs to be rescued, April was a prototype for strong female characters everywhere and is a great addition to NECA's ongoing Turtles line.

We all remember the yellow April from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon, and the green variant is just one more way for collectors to get their fill. Like the exclusive blue outfit, the yellow and green Aprils come with two Mousers with articulated jaws and have ball joints in the necks, shoulders, hips, hinges at the elbows, knees and ankles, and swivels at the waist, wrists, and cuffs.

The green and yellow-costumed April O'Neil will hit stores by the end of this month, and of course they'll also be available online at our Amazon storefront.

Keep it tuned to necaonline.com for more info on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and other lines from your favorite games and movies.

Last April BOOM! Studios showed the world that "Mark Waid Is Evil" with the smash hit series IRREDEEMABLE. Now Mark Waid is INCORRUPTIBLE. Comic News: In Stores Today: IDW and Habro Release G.I. JOE: COBRA Special #1

Special Editon Complete Mirror Image of Self

Available In Stores September 30, 2009

IDW Publishing and Hasbro (NYSE: HAS) today announced the release of G.I. JOE: COBRA Special #1, a groundbreaking special edition comic in the popular G.I. JOE: COBRA comic book series. Available in stores today, G.I. JOE: COBRA Special #1 tells the gripping tale of twin brothers drifting apart, framing the story in panels and pages that mirror each other. G.I. JOE: COBRA Special #1 is written by renowned G.I. JOE scribe Mike Costa, with art by fan-favorite Antonio Fuso.

“When Mike and Antonio first told us what they were planning for this Special, a story about twins that is perfectly symmetrical, it seemed almost impossible to execute,” said Michael Kelly, Hasbro’s Senior Global Publishing Manager, Entertainment & Licensing. “My first thought was, ‘If you’re going to cite Watchmen issue #5 as your inspiration, you’d better deliver on a level never seen before.’ G.I. JOE: COBRA Special #1 is an amazing accomplishment. The IDW team has given readers something to talk about for a long time.”

Spinning out of the red-hot mini series, G.I. JOE: COBRA, G.I. JOE: COBRA Special #1 follows up on the surprise reveal from COBRA #4 and focuses on masterminds behind this evil organization. The engaging storyline explores the deep conflict between twin brothers and how the feeling of isolation can trigger some dark consequences, all of which is enhanced by the art and design of the comic itself. As each brother tells his story, it is mirrored by the other. The level of detailed design throughout the comic, creating an exact panel to panel mirror, also serves to highlight the very different views of life that each brother has.

“Mike and Antonio have created something unique in the comic book genre,” said Andy Schmidt, G.I. JOE editor for IDW Publishing. “The imagery and complexity of the story are breathtaking. Watching this story come together with such a perfect integration of script, art, color, and lettering has been like watching a baseball pitcher work through a perfect game. I could feel the tension in my chest as we closed in on the final adjustments before we sent it to the printer. I’m looking forward to seeing what G.I. JOE fans and comic fans alike think about the issue.”

G.I. JOE: COBRA Special #1 ($3.99) will be available in stores on September 30, 2009.

Highlights of Hasbro’s new toy and game offerings for the 2009 holiday season include the following:

TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN Movie Line

TRANSFORMERS MOVIE FIGURES
(Approximate retail price: starting from $12.99; Ages: 5 & up; Available: Now)
For more than 25 years, TRANSFORMERS action figures have been known for their “MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE” play pattern, with robots converting into vehicles, and then back to robots again. In 2009, TRANSFORMERS movie action figures featuring the new film’s most popular characters will be available in three scales: DELUXE, VOYAGER (larger scale), and LEADER (largest scale and includes lights and sounds). DELUXE includes 24 characters, VOYAGER offers 11 characters, and LEADER features three, including OPTIMUS PRIME and JETFIRE.

BUMBLEBEE MOVIE VOICE MIXER HELMET
(Approximate retail price: $39.99; Ages 5 & up; Available: Now)
In both TRANSFORMERS movies, BUMBLEBEE was a scene-stealer and an instant favorite among kids and long-time TRANSFORMERS fans. Now, kids can pretend to be the fun-loving AUTOBOT character BUMBLEBEE with a role-playing helmet. The toy allows kids to mix their voice through a “radio” — just like BUMBLEBEE — and also features realistic robot battle sounds and radio tune-in phrases to add authenticity to the play experience.

TRANSFORMERS MOVIE CONSTRUCTICON DEVASTATOR
(Approximate retail price: $99.99; Ages 5 & up; Available: Now)
The largest and most powerful foe the AUTOBOTS encounter in TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN is DEVASTATOR, a monstrous DECEPTICON robot made up of six separate construction vehicles known as the CONSTRUCTICONS. The TRANSFORMERS MOVIE CONSTRUCTICON DEVASTATOR allows kids to re-create the film’s awesome action sequences.

GI JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA Movie Line

G.I. JOE MOVIE 3-3/4-INCH MOVIE FIGURES
(Approximate retail price: $7.99: Ages: 4 & up; Available: Now)
G.I. JOE invented the action figure category 45 years ago, and the G.I. JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA movie-line 3 ¾-inch action figures continue this great legacy. All figures are sculpted to match their on-screen counterparts, including Sienna Miller as BARONESS, and Channing Tatum as DUKE. Figures come with high-tech gear and projectile launchers, allowing for play among multiple waves that are set to be released in 2009, starting in July.

G.I. JOE MOVIE NIGHT RAVEN VEHICLE
(Approximate retail price: $39.99; Ages: 4 & up; Available: Now)
Based on the iconic jet from the 1980s and playing a big role in the movie, the COBRA NIGHT RAVEN comes fully loaded, with an array of engines, weapons, lights and sounds. The largest vehicle in the entire new G.I. JOE vehicle series, this jet also features a pump action “Lock and Load” system that readies the missiles for attack. Manning the controls in this ultimate G.I. JOE movie vehicle is a 3-¾-inch Air-Viper figure.

G.I. JOE MOVIE ACCELERATOR SUIT DUKE
(Approximate retail price: $69.99; Ages: 5 & up; Available: Now)
This unique figure captures the spirit of the G.I. JOE team leader and all of the technology needed to fight the COBRA forces. The ACCELERATOR SUIT DUKE figure comes equipped with the armored accelerator suit that DUKE wears in the G.I. JOE movie. When activated using an easy hand grip control, DUKE simulates his accelerator running motion, with motorized head, torso and arm movements as well as lights and speech with more than 50 phrases. With the ACCELERATOR SUIT DUKE figure, kids are able to “run” with DUKE and play out their favorite scenes from the movie or create their own new G.I. JOE missions.
