OBAMA MEETS SHAMELESS HUCKSTERISM – FOR CHARITY
Licensable BearTM ponies up limited Barack Obama edition for Hero Initiative
Trying to squeeze a few more drops of sweet economic nectar from the well-squeezed stimulus package known as “Obama comics,” About Comics has created a special limited edition of Licensable BearTM #4 (Barack’s first comic book appearance) for the Hero Initiative. A mere 60 copies of the Obamaesque (is that an adjective already?) Shepard Fairley-inspired cover have been printed, with 50 copies hand-numbered and signed by Licensable BearTM creator Nat Gertler. The numbered copies are currently available via Hero’s eBay store.
“I’d like to take credit as President Barack Obama’s creator in comics as well,” said Gertler. “Four score and seven weeks ago (well, actually in the year score-zero-seven), it was Licensable Bear #4 that had Obama’s first comic appearance. If only I’d trademarked him!”
Detail-oriented collectors will want to note that this limited edition is getting more limited by the minute. “My seven-month-old baby got hold of one of these copies and chewed and/or gummed it up pretty good,” noted Hero Initiative President Jim McLauchlin. “We’re now down to a limited edition of 49. And I can attest that Licensable Bear #4 makes for a tasty baby snack; less the staples, of course.”
Staples and paper were provided by USA printer Ka-blam.com, whose comics print-on-demand service makes low runs such as these 50—wait, 49!—economically practical. “More money for me to waste on Peanuts books,” noted Gertler.
Copies are available at $25 per, with copies #1, #44 (the number of Obama’s presidency) and #50 being placed for auction via eBay. “I even circled #50 on that copy,” Gertler said. “It’s all part of my commitment to quality customer service.
The Limited Hero Initiative Edition Licensable BearTM #4 can be purchased and auctions found at:

Three New Scripted Dramas to Premiere in the Fall, Along with Returning Favorites
And a Timeslot Flip on Monday Night
Midseason Premiere for New Drama “Life UneXpected”
(formerly “Parental Discretion Advised”)
The CW Network has set its fall premiere schedule, featuring the debut of three new series, returning favorites and a timeslot flip for the hit Monday night team of Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill.
The CW’s new schedule begins Tuesday, September 8 with the season premiere of sophomore drama 90210 (8:00-9:00 p.m. ET), followed by the series premiere of the updated version of Melrose Place (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET). As they did once before, 90210 and Melrose Place will combine for a great night of television.
On Wednesday, September 9, Tyra Banks returns with a two-hour premiere of the new season of America’s Next Top Model (8:00-10:00 p.m. ET), featuring contestants who are petite by modeling standards ─ 5’ 7” and under. The regular Wednesday night lineup begins on September 16 with America’s Next Top Model in the 8:00-9:00 p.m. timeslot, followed by the series premiere of the glamorous new drama The Beautiful Life: TBL (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET). From executive producer Ashton Kutcher, The Beautiful Life: TBL focuses on the daily lives of young models living together in a models’ residence in New York, while struggling to deal with the cutthroat competition and fleeting fame of the fashion world.
On Thursday, September 10, the new lineup features the premiere of The Vampire Diaries (8:00-9:00p.m. ET) and the return of fan favorite Supernatural (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET). Based on the best-selling book series from Alloy Entertainment, The Vampire Diaries focuses on the battle between two Vampire brothers – one good, one evil – who compete for the love of the same young woman. The Vampire Diaries provides the perfect lead-in to the chilling Supernatural, in which the Winchester brothers battle the other-worldly forces that tore their family apart.
On Monday, September 14, the smash hit team that made The CW one of the top destinations for young women returns with a new twist: One Tree Hill will take over the 8:00-9:00 p.m. timeslot, while television’s most buzzed-about series, Gossip Girl, moves to the 9:00-10:00 p.m. slot.
Smallville relocates to its new home on Friday, September 25 (8:00-9:00 p.m. ET), with the non-stop action and classic DC Comics characters viewers love. Smallville will be followed by encore episodes of America’s Next Top Model (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET).
The midseason premiere date for the drama “Life UneXpected,” which was formerly titled “Parental Discretion Advised,” will be announced at a later date.

Dark Horse Comics has announced that its forthcoming limited-edition statuette of Disney’s Uncle Scrooge character has sold out its edition.
The Oregon-based publisher is giving one of the comic book medium’s most revered casts of characters the Syroco-style treatment in a new series of sculpted statuettes based on Carl Bark’s Uncle Scrooge stories. There are six statuettes scheduled for the initial series.
Dark Horse has won countless accolades for this series of vintage-style statuettes featuring the best characters from comic books. Modeled after products that were popular in the 1930s and 1940s, these statuettes have been designed and manufactured to be consistent with earlier Syroco-style figures. These latest pieces, sculpted by Yoe! Studio, join the ever-growing collection of the world’s most famous characters from comic strips, books and, cartoons presented by Dark Horse in this unique style.
Described by Craig Yoe as “primitive but charming,” the initial figures are limited to only 950 hand-numbered pieces per character. Uncle Scrooge arrives in August 2009, with the others following monthly. The second statuette will be of Donald Duck, with Gyro Gearloose, Magica De Spell, Gladstone Gander, and one of the Beagle Boys rounding out the program. The edition size will be reduced to an even more limited number after Donald Duck.
The Classic Uncle Scrooge Character series depicts the characters as they were originally presented in the comics. They are also somewhat more rough-hewn than is common, with features including nonslick surface textures, visible seam lines, and other slightly “distressed” aspects, for a vintage look and feel.
“We are delighted with the support from the collector marketplace,” Dark Horse product development head David Scroggy stated, “although it comes as no surprise given the worldwide collector base for Uncle Scrooge. Many consider these to be among the best comics ever produced, and we hope to equal that high standard with these pieces.”
Each hand-numbered statuette comes carefully packaged in a custom-tooled, full-color, litho-printed tin box. Also included is a small booklet about each character and a vintage-style pin-back button of the character.

Something might be happening in INVINCIBLE #63 and whatever it is will quite possibly be rather amazing! In an unprecedented move, writer Robert Kirkman and illustrator Ryan Ottley have made a cryptic, semi-confident promise that INVINCIBLE #63 might be kind of a big deal for reasons they wouldn't say and plan to back it up with a special Wednesday shipment direct to comic shops!
"All I'm saying is INVINCIBLE #63 reorders should be double or triple over all retailer's orders combined plus fifty thousand," Kirkman stated. "I even heard President Barack Obama might call a press conference to discuss the contents of this very special issue, because there may be something of national interest in there. Also, every newspaper ever could possibly make it a front page story. Who knows?! All I can say for sure is every single human being on the planet, regardless of whether they read comics or even know what they are, will definitely be extremely interested in this issue, maybe even enough to buy a copy!"
INVINCIBLE #63 might even possibly be the biggest comic book event of all time, up there with The Death of Superman, The Death of Captain America, The Entirety of the Early Nineties and Action Comics #1! The only certainty is everyone must place a ridiculously massive order for a non-returnable product they may or may not make a profit on sometime in the near future. Or never. Don't ask - just buy it! You trust us, right?
Added Image Comics Publisher ericstephenson, "There's a chance this could very possibly an event of undetermined importance, both for comics fans and people of all walks of life, with only the most passing familiarity with comic books, or even books, period. We can't really say what happens in this issue, but trust, something does happen. And it might even be something interesting. Best not to jinx it, though, so let's just go with, 'Something happens.' It's somewhat likely a number of people we have yet to identify will want one. "
INVINCIBLE #63 (APR090384), a 32-page full color comic book easily worth around $500, but costing only $2.99, will be in stores June 17th, 2009.
