The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Sells Out & Returns With A New Printing!

One minute, she’s a girl from Kansas and the next she’s the great sorceress of the Munchkin people! How does Dorothy make such a radical transformation? Well an unexpected trip to the land of Oz sure helps. With Dorothy’s critically acclaimed descent into Oz, Marvel is pleased to announce that The Wonderful Wizard of Oz #1 (of 8), by Eric Shanower and Skottie Young, has sold out at Diamond and will be going back to press. The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz #1 Second Printing Variant will feature an all-new cover from Skottie Young, depicting Dorothy and her beloved Toto. Adapted from the beloved L. Frank Baum classic, fans and critics agree-- this book is a must-have!

“The art team really runs wild, delivering one of the finest visual experiences of the year. And it's likely that, with seven issues to go, things will only get better from here. Marvel's endeavors with its adaptations have been quite outstanding; Oz is yet another example of this publisher growing its business and doing it in a way that is both respectful and incredibly entertaining” says Richard George of IGN.com.

Doug Zawisza of ComicBookResources.com raves, “Shanower and Young have nothing but love for this concept and the characters therein… The visuals on the book are simply kinetic. Young brings his overly cartoonish expressionistic style here to a great fit for his work –- as though he has found the assignment of his lifetime and seeks to pump his own life into it. His characters are bouncy and engaging and the colors make the story live even moreso.”

Her first moments in Oz have been memorable. In the short time she’s been there, she has met witches, Munchkins and a living Scarecrow! There’s more in store for our young Kansas native, and to see where it all begins, check out The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz #1 Second Printing Variant!

Tom Brevoort - 5 Quick Questions

Tom Brevoort is an American comic book editor. Since the 1980s, he has worked for Marvel Comics. Brevoort started as an intern and worked his way up to an assistant editor and later an editor in his own right. As of 2007, he holds the title of Executive Editor with Marvel and is responsible for multiple series including New Avengers, Civil War, and Fantastic Four.

He agreed to answer 5 Quick Questions:

1) What would you say is your greatest achievement in comics?

Just being able to remain in comics for close to 20 years. Outside of that, it's really for other people to say what teh best stuff I've worked on might have been.

2) Who was your favorite writer or artist that you worked with & why?

I don't think it's possible to select one writer or artist as my absolute best or favorite, not without slighting too many other people. But it's always cool to work with Stan Lee, or simply exchange greetings with him and realize that he knows who I am.

3) What character you have never worked .., would you like to do & why?

In terms of the Marvel characters, I think the only major one I've never really handled has been Daredevil, so maybe at some point down teh line.

4) Who are your influences?

Stan, Julie Schwartz, Mark Gruenwald, Jack Kirby, etc.

5) What hero or villain would you like to change if you could and why?

I don't know, I don't typically look to go changing around heroes or vilains. If I like them, then I like them for who and whay they are, and if I don't like them, then I'm not in a big rush to use them.

You can check out Tom's blog at http://www.marvel.com/blogs/Tom%20Brevoort/entry/ Read more...

Christopher Yost - 5 Quick Question

Christopher Yost is a comic book and animation writer best known as the co-writer (with his frequent collaborator Craig Kyle) of the comic book series New X-Men.

Yost began his career in 2002 as an intern in Marvel Comics' west coast office. His spec film scripts got attention from Marvel executives who hired Yost to write episodes of the TV series X-Men: Evolution. In 2003, Yost and Kyle co-wrote the episodes that introduced mutant character X-23, female clone of the popular X-Men character Wolverine. Marvel executives were impressed with X-23’s reception on TV, and asked Yost and Kyle to adapt the character into comics, first by writing a six issue eponymous six-issue mini-series (titled X-23: Innocence Lost), and then by taking over writing chores (as of issue #20) on the New X-Men title, bringing X-23 in as a regular character. Yost and Kyle also co-wrote a second X-23 six-issue miniseries, titled X-23: Target X.

Currently, Yost co-writes the latest incarnation of X-Force with Craig Kyle since the New X-Men title was canceled as of issue #46. Yost also recently wrote a five-issue mini-series titled Emperor Vulcan, a spinoff mini from the Uncanny X-Men story arc, "The Rise and Fall of the Shi'ar Empire" Emperor Vulcan featured the third Summers brother, Gabriel (alias Vulcan), in his quest to bring stability to the struggling Shi'ar Empire after his successful coup d'etat against previous empress Lilandra. He is following this up with the Kingbreaker mini-series, which sets the scene for the War of Kings storyline Yost is also the writer of Ender's Game: Battle School, the first in a series of adaptations of Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game by Marvel.

1) What would you say is your greatest achievement in comics?

I would say my greatest achievement in comics is being IN comics. It's pretty great just to be here.

My favorite two issues I've worked on are New X-Men 42-43, I was pretty happy with that, that was the moment when I really felt we'd gotten to the right balance with that book. Of course, 3 issues later, the book was cancelled, ha ha.

2) Who was your favorite writer or artist that you worked with & why?

That's impossible to answer, because we've been blessed with some seriously great artists. Billy Tan, Mark Brooks, Paco Medina, Skottie Young, Mike Choi & Sonia Oback, Clayton Crain... we are lucky men. Diogenes Neves is a rising star, and Dustin Weaver is doing amazing stuff on Kingbreaker.

3) What character you have never worked .., would you like to do & why?

Between comics and animation, i've been lucky enough to work on a really wide range of characters. i've not worked with many DC characters, I suppose. I wouldn't mind trying Cloak and Dagger. I always liked them.

4) Who are your influences?

Joss Whedon is my master now. I love Grant Morrison, but I'm much more mainstream. And less cool, sigh.

5) What hero or villain would you like to change if you could and why?

I don't know... Stan and Jack got it pretty good. I'd like to see more VILLAINS. And any villain that went good... I'd like to see them evil again. The world needs more evil. :) Read more...

Terry Morre - 5 Quick Questions

Terry Moore is a comic book author, graphic novelist and illustrator.

He created the popular series Strangers in Paradise, and was involved in the founding of Homage Comics.

Following the examples of independent comic creators such as Dave Sim and Jeff Smith, he decided to publish Strangers in Paradise himself through his own Houston-based "Abstract Studios" imprint, and has frequently mentioned a desire to do a syndicated cartoon strip in the authors notes at the back of the Strangers in Paradise collection books. He has also mentioned his greatest career influence is Peanuts' Charles Schulz. Some of Moore's strip work can additionally be found in his Paradise, Too! publications.

His work has won him recognition in the comics industry, including receiving the Eisner Award for Best Serialized Story in 1996 for Strangers in Paradise #1-8, which was collected in the trade paperback "I Dream of You".

It was announced on June 15th, 2007 that Moore would be taking over for Sean McKeever as writer of Marvel Comics's Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane series starting with a new issue #1. On July 27th, Marvel announced that Moore would also take over for Joss Whedon as writer of Marvel's Runaways.

On November 19th, 2007 Terry Moore announced in his blog that his new self-published series would be named Echo and its first issue would appear on March 5th, 2008.

He agreed to answer 5 Quick Questions

1) What would you say is your greatest achievement in comics?

Staying in comics.

2) Who was your favorite writer or artist that you worked with & why?

That's a Sophie's Choice, you know, because they'll read this and all but one will say, "Wha...?! What about me?"

3) What character you have never worked .., would you like to do & why?

Supergirl. She needs me.

4) Who are your influences?

I'm influenced by everything, even the bad stuff. All my comic book influences are vague and scattered. I'm not really anybody's boy ward, more like a b*stard child of the entire art world.

5) What hero or villain would you like to change if you could and why?

Batman. What a jerk.

He was once the step-son of fellow comics creator John Byrne (with whom he collaborated on the Torch of Liberty strip) for a period when Byrne was married to his mother.

He agreed to answer 5 Quick Questions

1) What would you say is your greatest achievement in comics?

I guess just having a career in the biz for 20+ years and never having to go looking for work. But in terms of my favorite project, I'd have to say my adult humor series LCD: Lowest Comic Denominator. That was the most fun I've had doing comics. Followed by my most recent work, XXXombies.

2) Who was your favorite writer or artist that you worked with & why?

My collaborations with my good friend Rick Remender are the most fun I've had working in comics. A great treat to work with a friend and produce the sort of stuff we enjoy reading ourselves.

3) What character you have never worked .., would you like to do & why?

I've never really done Spiderman, and since he was a fave of mine growing up, it would be a treat to someday do a story with him. I've also always liked the Creeper and Deadman.

4) Who are your influences?

Buscema, Romita Sr., Toth, Byrne, Mort Drucker, Jack Davis, Dan Adkins, Al Williamson, Mike Mignola, Francois Boucq, Moebius, Jaime Hernandez, Dan Clowes, et al

5) What hero or villain would you like to change if you could and why?

Sorry, but I have no useful response to this question. ;)

I always welcome any collaboration with my pal Chuck Dixon. I'm hard-pressed to call it WORK when Chuck's involved. As far as artists go, working with Butch Guice on RUSE raised the creative bar for me. The same goes for Chris Sprouse on NUMBER OF THE BEAST. Some of my other favorite collaborations include Marcos Martin on BATGIRL YEAR ONE and Wes Craig on WILDSTORM: REVELATIONS. These days, I'm loving what Mike Huddleston does with my Gen13 scripts.

3) What character you have never worked .., would you like to do & why?

Paul Kirk, Manhunter... or Captain Comet. I consider Archie Goodwin and Walt Simonson's Manhunter series one of the finest examples of the medium, bar none. CC is simply a personal fave. I have a soft spot for those old SECRET SOCIETY OF SUPER-VILLAIN issues featuring Comet chasing the Society across universes.

4) Who are your influences?

Denny O'Neil. Gerry Conway. Len Wein. Marv Wolfman. Eliot S! Maggin. Alan Moore. Bob Haney. Etc. Etc. Etc.

5) What hero or villain would you like to change if you could and why?

Aquaman. I think I could make him work. Original costume. One-hour time limit. Ethan Van Sciver, are you listening? :)

Without doubt, Al Williamson. A great artist and a true gent. I met him early in my career and he sort of took me under his wing - he liked the way I drew and made a point of encouraging me and I learnt so much from him. He also did some of the best inking over my pencils.

3) What character you have never worked .., would you like to do & why?

Gerard Way's Umbrella Academy brought to life!

Gerard Way has managed to make quite a name for himself in the comics industry over the past year—racking up an Eisner for Best Limited Series, and a Harvey for Best New Series, for his breakthrough miniseries The Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite. In tandem with series artist, multiple-Eisner winner Gabriel Bá, Way has created a bizarre world which defies the space-time continuum, and pits a dysfunctional family of super-powered siblings against animated monuments, talking chimpanzees, a secret society of robot assassins, and each other.

Right on the heels of the first issue of Way/Bá’s highly anticipated follow-up series, The Umbrella Academy: Dallas, Dark Horse Deluxe is proud to announce the release of a new figure set depicting the six members of The Umbrella Academy introduced in Apocalypse Suite, as well as a book-and-figure set that includes a hardcover edition of the first collected graphic novel and a 4-inch figure of Vanya, AKA The White Violin, the shunned UA sibling with the sinister set of strings!

The Umbrella Academy Book and Figure Set features a previously unused cover by Gabriel Bá for the special digest-sized hardcover. The included 4-inch figure depicts Vanya as The White Violin, poised to end the world in concert with The Conductor and his evil Orchestra Verdammten! It is scheduled for release in April 2009 at a suggested retail price of $24.99.

The Umbrella Academy Figure Set features the six members of the Academy, sized to scale, with Spaceboy measuring a beastly 5-inches as the largest figure in the set, and The Boy stacking up at a small-but-substantial 2-inches. The Dark Horse Product Development team worked closely with Way and Bá, adding bold shadowing and strange angles to create uncanny likenesses that evoke the characters exactly as they appear in the comic. The final product is as unique and quirky as the story itself, encasing the six siblings in cylindrical 360-degree packaging that displays the team under an umbrella-shaped dome. See these superheroes in all of their splendor when they hit retail stores in May 2009, with a suggested price of $39.99.

“In my six years at Dark Horse, I have never experienced this much cooperation and inspired creativity on a project,” says Rebecca D’Madeiros, Senior Product Development Manager for Dark Horse Comics. “Gerard and Gabriel, the team here at Dark Horse, and the manufacturers have contributed a wealth of ideas for the figures and the unique packaging. It’s been great fun along the way. We are all proud of the outcome: a 6-piece figure set worth displaying on a revolving shelf with spotlights and soundtrack music!”

Art Adams - 5 Quick Questions

Arthur "Art" Adams is an American writer and comic book illustrator.

Art Adams was born on April 5, 1963 in Holyoke, Massachusetts, and dreamed of becoming a comic book illustrator from a very early age, largely teaching himself the skills he would later use. He became a fan favorite when he penciled the critically-acclaimed Longshot miniseries, written by Ann Nocenti and published in 1985 by Marvel Comics. Adams' highly distinctive and detailed artwork gained him considerable popularity and he found it easy to find further work in the field. However, due to the labor-intensive nature of his detailed art, Adams found it difficult to meet the short deadlines often found in the comics industry. This has led to him to pursue work for shorter projects such as miniseries, specials, and annuals rather than pursuing work for ongoing comic book series. Exceptions to this include a 1989 two-issue run on X-Factor, and a 1990 three-issue run on Fantastic Four. He also had a ten-issue run on Tom Strong's Terrific Tales (2002-2004), which being an anthology, required only eight pages from him for each issue.

Most of Adams' work has been on properties owned by others, but he is also the author of the creator-owned series Monkeyman and O'Brien, also published by Dark Horse.

Adams is also a highly-regarded cover artist, and he has provided cover images for issues of Superman, Batman, Justice League of America and Vampirella, among other titles. In addition to his work on comics themselves, he has also produced popular commercial art, such as numerous illustrations for trading cards, posters, shirts, and various other comics-related merchandise. Outside the field of comics, he has also provided illustrations for various magazines, movies, games, worked in toy design, and even a series of X-Men-themed Campbell Soup cans.
