I.M.O. Review: Brave and the Bold #23 (DC Comics) By Eddie R.

Future Warning.

I knew this was coming. I said to myself eventually this meeting had to happen. I mean, how could it not? After all the recent adventures the JSA had with the Earth- 22/ Kingdom Come Superman, and the recent introduction of Magog into the current DCU, a meeting between Magog and Booster Gold was inevitable.

Unlike what usually goes on in the current Booster Gold series, this one- shot story of the Brave and the Bold #23 starts off in reverse. Sometimes at the end of each BG issue, the heroes usually end up back in Rip Hunters lab after staving off another time anomaly. From there we are shown a series of clues, usually via the infamous chalkboard, and the adventure stops for the meantime. In this issue however, this is just the beginning.

Responding to an alarm of an unauthorized entry into Rip Hunters lab, Booster and Skeets come face to face with two distorted figures fighting on the Time Platform. As Skeets reports, Dr. Hunter has been missing for a while, due to one of his solo temporal adventures, but has managed to access the Time Platform as an emergency return to the present, right in the middle of a possible life and death struggle.

When Booster does manage to break Rip free of the fight, Rip re-materializes with not only a piece of evidence as to where he might have gone, but also mumbles a certain name before passing out. Soon Booster uses the platform to travel into a future where he emerges in a world full of death and destruction. After being yanked back unceremoniously by Rip to the present, Booster sets out on a mission to confront the one man who he thinks is responsible for this apocalyptic future: Magog.

When Booster and Magog do finally meet, you can sense the hostility brewing. Both men don’t see eye-to-eye on many points, and you can cut the tension with a knife. Things get even more complicated when Rip shows up, and reveals that even though he hasn’t done anything yet, Magog must play out his part in history, therefore Booster must leave him alone.

But before leaving, Booster gives Magog a warning. He knows what Magog will become, and when the time comes, Booster will stop him. But for now, all Booster can do is continue to watch and wait. And so will I.

8/10
