Comic Review: Star Trek DS9: Fool's Gold #1

IDW has been on a real roll lately with their Star Trek comics, particularly with their takes on The Original Series era stories like Star Trek: Crew and Mission's End. Their new comic, Fool's Gold is set in the Next Generation era and brings back the characters and locations from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

It's great to see this era and especially this series get some love from IDW. Deep Space Nine was the Star Trek show that broke all the rules: there was no Enterprise, not even a real star ship to speak of until later in the show, most of the action took place in a confined space station, the characters were not a harmonious bunch of space explorers but a sometimes fragmented group of realistic personalities with their own agendas. It was a ground breaking sci-fi show that paved the way for gritty shows like the reimagined Battlestar Galactica.

Fool's Gold is the first part of a series and wisely takes some time to reintroduce us to the cast of characters and the station itself. I like the fact that the story starts with another ship docking with DS9 and we get a chance to experience the station as outsiders coming in and all of the main characters have a short bit with occasional inside references for fans of the show. The story seems to be set somewhere in the middle to early seasons of the show while Jake is still younger and before Worf joined the cast and it involves a pair of outsiders who come to station and are seemingly up to no good. Of course, it involves the Ferengi Quark which raises the ire of Constable Odo.

Trekkies and fans of DS9 will definitely want to pick this one up to see how the story unfolds. I can't overestimate how great it is to be able to re-enter the world of Deep Space Nine again. It looks like the popularity of last summer's Star Trek movie is creating a resurgence in interest in all things Trek, and that's a good thing.

Comic Review: Transformers: Tales of the Fallen #5 Ravage (IDW Publishing)

One the few classic Transformers characters that was actually done justice by this summer's Michael Bay juggernaut Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was the Decepticon scout Ravage. In his G1 appearances, Ravage transformed from a cassette tape into a robotic panther. In his movie incarnation he transforms from a, um, projectile into a weird cycloptic mechanical feline. Despite his makeover into the overly-complicated movie aesthetic, Ravage was the same bad kitty we all know and love. He was one of the cooler new characters in the movie. And then they killed him.

But if I learned anything from Revenge of the Fallen, it is that characters can be conveniently and inexplicably resurrected whenever they (or at least their character model) are needed. So, Tales of the Fallen begins with Ravage's reassembly and one of the mysteries of this little tale is figuring out who has reassembled him and who is his new master. It was also not totally clear where he was being reassembled. What we get in the meantime are lots of cool Ravage action scenes and cameos from Soundwave, the Kitchencons and the metallic hairball robot.

Unfortunately, the comic ends rather abruptly and left me wanting to know what happened next, which is not a bad thing at all. The artists seem to be having a lot of fun with Ravage and there is some very nice artwork through out, especially a very cool panel where Ravage is skulking underwater. I was having a good time with Ravage and then I saw that the next issue was a spotlight on the Arcee unicycle triplets.

Comic Review: Giant Monster (Boom Studios)

Writer Steve Niles and Boom! Studios brings us their take on the classic kaiju genre with the new hardcover, Giant Monster.

A somewhat tongue-in-cheek homage to the great and Godzilla and Gamera movies of yore, Giant Monster had many of the elements that made those movies so much fun back in their heyday in the 1950's and 1960's: mad scientists, a space mission gone awry, a giant robot and, of course, the titular Giant Monster in the form of an astronaut who falls prey to a space parasite that mutates him into a huge, skeletal monster. Unlike those Japanese classics, Giant Monster also has a sharp sense of humor as well as an impressive amount of blood and gore. In fact, one of the images that is repeated through out the book is a very realistically depicted human being who has been crushed under the monster's foot. People must get stepped on left and right in kaiju movies but you never really are shown the results. Thank you, Giant Monster, for going there and making me throw up a little in my mouth.

All in all, it's a fun read that perhaps lacks a really iconic monster design. The monster in question is basically a giant gory skeleton which raises all kinds of weird questions, but if I can accept giant earth-defending butterflies and a big turtle that has jets coming out of its legs I guess I can suspend my disbelief a little bit. Unfortunately, the story ends rather abruptly and unsatisfying, but Giant Monster is definitely worth checking out.

Comic News: DYNAMITE GOES DIGITAL THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

Premiere Comics Publisher Rolls out Two Digital Titles in time for the Holidays

Dynamite Entertainment announced today that they have partnered with comiXology to roll out two of their titles via the Comics by comiXology iPhone app before the holidays.

Fans can look for Dynamite's Terminator and the Army of Darkness Holiday Special now in the Comics by comiXology app! The free app is available, with over 700 comics, on Apple's iTunes App Store.

"The world is evolving and along with it, the way we purchase and view entertainment, including comics. That's something that we all are adapting to. But there is a ‘wow' part, and that is in combining the cool comics Dynamite produces with the work that comiXology is doing and usher it to the brand-new audience waiting to experience our DYNAMITE publications. While we love producing comics as monthly periodicals and collected editions, introducing new fans to comics through the iPhone and other technologies will help to complement and grow the industry. Working with comiXology is a great way to take existing comics and bring them to a new audience, and work to bring that audience back to the comic shops. So, while until now we've been hesitant to do anything that would adversely affect our comics retail partners, the additional features that comiXology adds that allows fans to find out more about the comics stores near them has made this the right time and a win-win for everyone."

"We're incredibly excited to expand Comics by comiXology with Dynamite Entertainment," said David Steinberger, CEO of comiXology. "The amazing titles and work will really shine on the platform. Terminator and Ash are a great start to a full line of Dynamite titles on the iPhone."

The Guided View feature of Comics by comiXology keeps the entire page of a comic intact, unlike other solutions where the page is cut into individual pictures the user browses like a photo application. The app's retailer locator will enable customers to contact local retailers from within the app itself to order the print edition of Dynamite Entertainment Comics.

Fans can review the available Dynamite titles on the web beginning on the aforementioned days here: http://www.comixology.com/digital/publisher/5/dynamite

To download Comics by comiXology from iTunes:

To get more information about Comics by comiXology:
http://comixology.com/iphoneapp

Dynamite iPhone catalog page on comiXology:

And this is just the beginning as Dynamite closes out the year with these initial offerings and plans to release more in early 2010, stay tuned!
