Comic Review: Star Trek Crew TPB

As so dramatically demonstrated by this summer's box office blockbuster Star Trek, there are several different continuities in the Star Trek franchise. What many people don't realize is that the "canon" continuity, you know, the one from The Original Series, The Next Generation and the subsequent shows and movies, is not the original continuity. The very first pilot episode of Star Trek back in the 1960's did not feature Captain Kirk and was a de facto alternate universe Enterprise and crew. The show was rebooted and a new pilot episode was filmed with many new characters but that episode, "The Cage," represents Gene Roddenberry's original vision for Star Trek.

The IDW comic series Star Trek: Crew is set in that alternate timeline. the individual stories have now been collected in a new trade paperback of the same name. The stories in follow the exploits of the nameless crew member who we first saw as "Number 1," the first officer to Captain Pike in the original Star Trek pilot episode. We follow her here from her days as an ensign on the very first journey of the Enterprise, to her distinguished career and to the eve of her return to the Enterprise and where we found her in "The Cage." She's a really terrific character and almost supernaturally capable and prepared. As a nod to the running joke in Star Trek lore, she is never named during the whole course of the series. In her sole appearance, this character was played by the late Majel Barrett, the widow of Gene Roddenberry, so Star Trek: Crew is also a tribute to her, the grand dame of Star Trek. It is nice to be able to follow this character on the adventures she was never able to have on the show, some say due to the fact that audiences were uncomfortable with such a strong and competent female character.

If you are a fan of Star Trek (especially The Original Series,) you will really love Star Trek: Crew. In short, it is very good Trek and captures the feel of the original series perfectly both in the very retro art style and in the way that the stories are paced. One almost expects to hear the classic end-of-credits music in the final panels of each entry. While I think that the art style is appropriate for the overall feel of the book, it is not exactly pretty to look at. It looks somewhat primitive, as though you had picked up a comic that had been printed in the 1960's or 1970's. Again, I am sure this is a choice and I get it but I'm not crazy about it.

The classic feel goes beyond the stylistic choices and carries over to the actual stories themselves which feel like wonderful heady 1960's sci-fi plots that could have very easily have been dreamed up for The Original Series. Whether it's a race of aliens trying to avoid the end of the universe in the distant future or cloned Vietnam warriors that had been mysteriously teleported to an alien planet in the 1960's, the stories have the prerequisite social commentary that made Star Trek more than just kiddie space opera.

I have never been a huge fan of The Original Series but I really enjoyed Star Trek: Crew both as an homage to an under explored corner of the Star Trek universe and as a well-written and well-produced science fiction. I also found it an interesting counterpart to the new Star Trek continuity that was launched with the most recent movie as it is set in a similar, yet alternate, time period. It seems the opportunities for storytelling in Trek are unlimited.

Comic News: Bloom County Debuts at #1

First ever chronological collection tops The New York Times Best Seller List

Opus, Milo, Bill the Cat and the entire cast of Bloom County characters make their triumphant return as The Bloom County Library Volume One debuts at the top of The New York Times Best Seller List! The first of a five volume series, The Bloom County Library Volume One features every daily and Sunday strip from 1980-82 in chronological order, many reprinted for the first time, plus context pages and commentary from the creator, Berkeley Breathed.

“Honestly, I thought most of the old Bloom County fans were either wandering the streets talking to Pluto on their CIA brain implants or dead,” said Breathed. “Instead it seems that they’re still out there in large numbers, lucid and sober enough to read. NOW I find this out, years after I quit.”

Breathed's Bloom County is one of the most popular and critically acclaimed newspaper strips of modern times. Premiering on December 8th, 1980 - a month after the election of Ronald Reagan as President - the strip brought to the comics pages a unique amalgam of contemporary politics and fantasy, all told with hilarious wit and humor. Breathed was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 1987 for his work on Bloom County and at its height the strip was published in an astonishing 1200 newspapers.

“While debuting as #1 on The New York Times list is incredible,” said editor Scott Dunbier, “I’m even happier to be able to say to Berkeley: ‘Told you so!’”

In addition to a complete chronological reprint of the first two years, The Bloom County Library Volume One contains a series of context pages sprinkled throughout the book, providing perspective for the reader and presenting a variety of real-life events and personalities that were contemporary at the time of original publication. Breathed also adds his own commentary, giving the reader insight on certain strips and his creative process.

The Bloom County Library Volume One is the most recent release from IDW and its imprint, the Library of American Comics, helmed by Eisner Award winner Dean Mullaney. The Bloom County Library Volume One is edited by Dunbier and designed by Mullaney.

The Bloom County Library Volume One ($39.99; ISBN 978-1600105319) is now on sale.

Comic Review: Clive Barker's Seduth #1

Horror and comics have had a long and profitable partnership and it is not uncommon for many of our great horror fiction writers to return to the medium that inspired them in their youth. After all, a comic is a great vehicle for that staple of horror storytelling: The Weird Tale. British author Clive Barker is no stranger to the comics and his new comic Seduth makes good use of the medium and is produced in old-school 3-D as well.

Seduth is a compact tale of a man who possesses a diamond which contains a malignant darkness, and what happens when it is unleashed upon him and the world at large when it is physically cracked open. The story fits nicely in the Barker body of work and explores his common themes of hidden worlds and body horror. For a short piece it covers a lot of scope, particualarly with the introduction of Sanguin Crystalis, a plague that is released from the opened diamond that reveals itself in crystaline growths in the blood and on the body.

Seduth is presented in 3-D and retail copies will be packaged with 3-D glasses. This has the effect of muting the color palette somewhat but it actually pays off in dividends in the last third of the comic, which features some truly trippy visuals that put the 3-D to good use. Seduth is a great treat for fans of Clive Barker and anyone who likes their horror surreal and disturbing.

—Street Naming Celebrates Author of Famed Children’s Book, Where the Wild Things Are, which Comes to Life on the Big Screen in Spike Jonze-Directed Film on October 16—

—Sendak’s Work Commemorated with a Special Department of Education Curriculum, Available to Schools Nationwide—

NYC & Company CEO George Fertitta, Chancellor for Teaching and Learning at the Department of Education Santiago Taveras, author and illustrator Maurice Sendak, director Spike Jonze, and 50 school children from PS 41 today honored Sendak at a street naming ceremony in Greenwich Village. Sendak, whose most celebrated book, Where the Wild Things Are, was adapted for film by Jonze and Dave Eggers, wrote the childhood story while living on Greenwich Avenue. Two signs at the corner of Greenwich Avenue and Christopher Street temporarily declare the intersection of “Maurice Sendak Way” and “Wild Things Way.” A proclamation declaring today “Where the Wild Things Are Day” was also unveiled.

“We are privileged to welcome back Maurice Sendak to the very neighborhood in which he wrote the classic children’s tale – a story about discovery which still resonates today with audiences of all ages,” said NYC & Company CEO George Fertitta. “Today’s declaration of ‘Where the Wild Things Are Day’ is a highlight celebration during ‘Wild Things Week in NYC’ and which we are honored to share with the author who started it all 46 years ago.”

“Where the Wild Things Are is one of the most beloved and best-selling children’s books of all time and the New York City Department of Education is thrilled to celebrate the opening of its release as a film,” said Santiago Taveras, Interim Acting Deputy Chancellor for Teaching and Learning at the DOE. “We are especially excited to honor Mr. Sendak’s work by offering a curriculum that encourages teachers to use it to engage students to make connections between
the book and the film.”

Also announced at today's event was the creation of a special curriculum resource, created by the New York City Department of Education. Guided by the belief that appreciating the film begins by looking deeply at the book this resource invites elementary and middle school teachers to engage their students in thoughtful comparisons and analyses of the two media. The curriculum is posted on the DOE's website of the Office of Arts and Special Projects, and is available to educators nationwide.

Maurice Sendak was born in Brooklyn in 1928. His most acclaimed literary work, Where the Wild Things Are, which won the coveted Caldecott Medal in 1963, has consistently ranked as one of the 10 all-time, best-selling children’s books by Publishers Weekly since it was first published in 1963. The book continues to touch millions of readers worldwide and, with its enduring and captivating appeal, provide an invaluable contribution to the ongoing fight for global child literacy.

Directed by Spike Jonze, “Where the Wild Things Are” has attracted the attention of fans young and old - including the original, loyal supporters of Sendak’s timeless classic, the young readers for which it still appeals, and the youthful generation of enthusiastic, devoted followers of Jonze’s unconventional work.

“Where the Wild Things Are,” distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, opens in theaters nationwide on October 16.

In celebration of the highly-anticipated, big-screen adaptation of the book, NYC & Company, has partnered with Warner Bros. Pictures to bring Wild Things Week in NYC to New York City, from October 12 - October 16. Wild Things Week in NYC provides New Yorkers and visitors of all ages the chance to embrace their inner wild child through a week of one-time cultural events, special exhibits, celebrity appearances, promotional giveaways, outdoor adventures, and “wild” festivities throughout New York City, leading up to the films national release on October 16.

A complete list of “Wild Things Week in NYC” events can be found at www.nycgo.com/wildthingsweek.

The TARDIS arrives on Androzani Minor, the source of a life-prolonging drug refined from a substance called Spectrox. Production of the drug is controlled by Sharaz Jek, a madman in self imposed exile, who blames Morgus, a powerful industrialist on Androzani Major, for all his misfortunes. The two sides are pitched in a convoluted ongoing war which, unknown to Jek, gives Morgus a monopoly of Spectrox on his planet, Major. Jek becomes infatuated with Peri, and saves her and the Doctor from being executed on Morgus’s orders. However, the two travellers learn that they have contracted spectrox toxaemia, a fatal disease. Mattel took time out their busy schedule to answer some questions

1) Does Mattel have any type of buyback policy with the major retail outlets for unsold DC figures? If so, can you tell us what the buyback percentage is?

Sorry, this is not information we can share.

2) The upcoming Superman/Batman: Public Enemies figures are just great. Was there are reason they weren't released the same time as the DVD? Production, shipping, customs, etc.

The figures release is timed for an aisle switch over which will happen a few weeks after the DVD release.

3) Will we be seeing 3 1/3" & 6" figures for the new DC Animated movie, Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths? If so, will these be another retail store exclusive?

We won’t be doing Crisis on Earth 2, but if Public Enemies does well we may look at future DVD releases as inspiration for toy lines.

4) In terms of selling to local comic shops & other types of smaller stores, do they buy directly from you or do they buy through Diamond Distribution? Personally I know my LCS does buy through Diamond, but wondering how others, like online stores as Enchanted Toy Chest & Big Bad Toy Store, buy your product.

The short answer is both. Each retailer decides how to order their product.

5) I'm especially excited for the World's Greatest DC Superheroes series. These are the just like the Megos I grew up with. Are you using the same tooling for the bodies, or have you redesigned them? And will the costumes be removable?

They are 100% new bodies, but meant to mimic the classic vintage look in style and articulation. The costumes are removable. Our goal for the line was to make them as close to the original in feel, look and cheesyness.

6) There are a lot of International collectors that can't get some of the store exclusives, like Wave 10. Are there any plans to make the exclusives available for them? What about an international/European online shop?

Wave 10 will be available at Wal-Mart locations world wide.

7) On the bios for the MOTUC figures, it seems heavy on the 200X continuity. Are a lot of the bios coming from a 200X series bible or the comics bible?

The bios are a combination of several MOTU stories including the 2002 series, the mini comics and other vintage material. One of the goals of the line was to create a continuity that would be true to the core details while still leaving room to incorporate fan requested characters like Goddess, He-Ro and Wun-Dar into the world. Not an easy task!

Comic News: KIRKMAN & SILVESTRI KILL FOR GOOD: PILOT SEASON: MURDERER #1

Top Cow Productions, Inc. proudly announced today that Pilot Season 2009 will kick of with Pilot Season: Murderer #1.

Due to arrive in comic books stores across the country on November 18, 2009, Pilot Season: Murderer #1 is 32 pages of moral torment in a character study spuriously conjured from the minds of Image Comics partners Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead, Invincible) and Top Cow founder Marc Silvestri (X-Men/Dark Avengers: Utopia, The Darkness).

Kirkman writes the story of Jason Sparks, a man cursed to spend every waking moment being bombarded by the thoughts of strangers around him. Every dirty little secret and every hidden desire screams out at him in a cacophony of voices in his head. The only way to silent these voices, the only thing that buys Jason a moment of respite… is murder. Up and coming artist Nelson Blake II (The Darkness, Broken Trinity: Witchblade) performs the artistic duties to flesh out the story of a man trying to use his powers for good. Pilot Season: Murderer #1 features a cover by co-creator Marc Silvestri and colorist Sunny Gho of IFS.

Pilot Season: Murderer #1 is priced at $2.99 as part of Top Cow’s ongoing initiative to maintain their price point at $2.99 throughout 2009 for all of their regular comic books. It is the first of five new concepts created by Kirkman and Silvestri especially for Pilot Season 2009.

Pilot Season has been an annual Top Cow tradition since 2007 that give fans the power to choose the next two Top Cow series based on a selection of one-shot Pilot Season “pilot” issues through online voting. The inaugural Pilot Season initiative garnered more than four million votes from fans across the globe.
