COMIC NEWS: BOOM! STUDIOS PRESENTS 7 PSYCHOPATHS THIS MAY!

A NEW MINI-SERIES
FROM CRIMINAL CO-CONSPIRATOR
SEAN PHILLIPS!

7 MEN. 1 IMPOSSIBLE MISSION.
ASSASSINATE HITLER!

This May BOOM! Studios brings you a World War II epic like no other with 7 PSYCHOPATHS, written by Fabien Vehlmann and interior art by CRIMINAL co-conspirator Sean Phillips.

With World War II in full swing, there's only one way to draw the war to a quick end: kill Hitler. But who would be insane enough to try? One person knows just the men to do it. Insane? Psychotic? Mad? Call them what you will, but the 7 PSYCHOPATHS are now the only hope the world has!

"7 PSYCHOPATHS is probably the most difficult story I've ever drawn,” said 7 PSYCHOPATHS artist Sean Phillips. “Nine or ten panel pages, having to find reference for everything I had to draw, drawing a type of story I'd never tackled before, it was hard work. Many times I wondered if it was worth the effort. Then I started to receive jpegs of Hubert's coloured pages, and it was definitely worth it. He's made it look like a book drawn by someone who knew what he was doing! It seemed as if I could do Fabien's great story justice after all."

7 PSYCHOPATHS #1 hits shelves in May, is written by Fabien Vehlmann and features cover and interior art by Sean Phillips. Cover price for 7 PSYCHOPATHS #1 is $3.99.

“Working with Claudio has been an absolute revelation in terms of Coheed and Cambria's popularity,” said AMORY WARS co-writer Peter David. "I cannot tell you the number of times I've encountered people who don't read "X-Factor," never heard of "Fallen Angel," but I mention that I'm working with Claudio and they instantly declare their undying love for all things C&C. They start rattling off titles, song lyrics, and they absolutely cannot wait to get their hands on the next installment of Claudio's epic science fiction vision. For those fans who have been waiting years for this new comic series, the wait is over. For anyone who's going to be entering Claudio's world for the first time, welcome to Heaven's Fence."

“I know fans have been waiting for this story for years,” said Coheed and Cambria lead singer and AMORY WARS writer Claudio Sanchez. “I’m excited about partnering with Peter David and BOOM! Studios to finally get this story out of my head and into your hands.”

THE AMORY WARS tells the story of Claudio Kilgannon, son of Coheed and Cambria, the subjects of a privately developed anti-terrorist unit. Comic Review: Kill Audio #6 (Boom! Studios)

BOOM! Studios' Kill Audio #6 is a bittersweet review for me. On the one hand, I am excited to see Claudio Sanchez's vision for this story come to fruition. On the other hand, I'm sad to see this mini-series end. I've loved every issue, and this issue is no different. Sanchez and co-writer Chondra Echert have brought everything to an action-packed climax filled with the same violence and humor I've come to expect.

In this issue Kill is still trying to do his job as part of the Void and bring order to the chaos that is music, while trying to thwart his brother Art's plan to end the world with a destructive frequency piped through Bone Beaver's brain. This issue opens right in the middle of the fight between brothers that turns in to an all-out brawl complete with a decapitation and someone being cut in half.

Lest you think this is just all about the action, think again. Sanchez once again provides commentary on the juxtaposition of art and order. Bring that up next time your friends say comics are just funny books. (See? You can learn something from comics.)

This is my favorite BOOM! Studios title by far. Fire up the turntable, iPod, or ghetto blaster and rock out with Kill Audio and friends. I can guarantee a good time will be had by all.

COMIC REVIEW: Weekly World News #3 (IDW)

Weekly World News #3 is here! IDW's hilarious journey through the cavalcade of freaks and Ed Anger's quest to run them out on a rail continues, and I'm excited to be along for the ride.

One of the things I was afraid of when reading this series was keeping it fresh. Would it become gimmicky and lose its flavor like dime store bubble gum? The answer, simply put--no. Chris Ryall and Alan Robinson team up once again to create a book that's fun to read. Robinson's cover apes the cover of the Actual Weekly World News, but JK Woodward's cover takes the prize, with Bat Boy doing his best Coppertone baby impression.

We begin our story where we last left it: Ed Anger, on his mission to oust freaks like Bat Boy from their place of acceptance, continues to mount evidence against them. In this issue we see our old friends Manigator, Bat Boy, and PhD Ape, along with new favorite of mine Freeze-Dried Baby. Ed continues his typical rhetoric about the freaks (including his opinion on a certain Kryptonian) in front of web journalists and spreads his message across the media landscape. Will he be successful? Well, that's part of the fun.

The genius of this comic is the crazy amount of allusions to bits of pop culture. The annotations are great, even for a pop culture junkie like me--I caught most of them, but there were a couple that slipped by me.

Buy this book. Even if you can't find the other two issues, you can easily pick up the story, and everyone can enjoy the crazy goodness of crotchety old Ed Anger vs. the Weekly World News freaks.

COMIC NEWS: Dan DeCarlo's Archie Is Back

IDW to launch hardcover, first-ever collection entirely dedicated to
this seminal Archie artist

Beginning in May

Starting in May 2010, a dean of Archie artists will be showcased in his very own series, kicking off an extraordinary series of important Archie collections from IDW Publishing. Archie: The Best of Dan DeCarlo Volume One offers the very best of this classic and influential artist, gathering strips from the mid 1950s through the early 1970s.

“As a long-time DeCarlo fan, I am very excited about this series, as well as the rest of IDW’s Archie books,” said IDW chief operating officer, Greg Goldstein. “This is an amazing property that has influenced generations of people around the world, and this is the first book to specifically showcase Dan’s amazing art.”

Coming of age in World War II era-America, Archie captured the hearts of young and old alike. Archie and his friends remain hugely popular today through an appealing blend of timeless, humorous stories and classic Americana.

Dan DeCarlo spent nearly 50 years with the characters of Riverdale High, drawing every character at one time or another. Archie: The Best of Dan DeCarlo Volume One contains dozens of stories handpicked by DeCarlo connoisseurs, all newly scanned from rare original art and recolored to capture the flavor of the original comics.

This is the first in IDW’s “Best Of” series, which will grow to include collections of Bob Montana, Harry Lucey, and Stan Goldberg, among others.

“It’s no secret to anyone who knows me that I am a great fan of Dan DeCarlo’s work,” said IDW Special Projects Editor, Scott Dunbier. “His classic style inspired and influenced scores of artists and entertained countless fans.”

Archie: The Best of Dan DeCarlo, Volume One ($24.99, full color, hardcover, 156 pages) will be available in stores in May 2010. Diamond order code MAR10 1052. ISBN 973-1600106545.

COMIC REVIEW: G.I. Joe Origins #13 (IDW)

G.I. Joe Origins focuses on one of the lesser known Joes this month, Ripcord. In the old Marvel run, Rip had a few good issues, mostly focused around the Cobra Island storyline, but he could hardly be termed a major player. Whether that's going to change or not in this new IDW continuity is uncertain, but the character has certainly changed (and that's ok). Fanboys will probably argue over whether IDW is trying to cash in on lingering recognition of last summer's movie, or whether Hasbro has declared that Ripcord, across all media, is now the wise-guy/sidekick who wants to be a pilot. Ultimately it doesn't matter; that's who Wallace "Ripcord" Weems is now in the IDW Joe universe as well as the Rise of Cobra Joe universe. If you, as a Joe fan or comic reader, don't like that, steer clear.

If you don't fear change, this issue of origins is a solid return to being a military action comic, something the last issue certainly can't claim. And while I enjoyed that Baroness issue and its utterly-un-GI Joe-like art, it was a pretty big departure from the usual Joe fare, so it's probably a good move by IDW to return the reader to more familiar ground. Instead of a wealthy socialite joining the Revolution, paratroopers are jumping out of planes, Spy Drones are being deployed, and a bad-ass, highly motivated soldier is continuing his mission despite setbacks that should have completely scrubbed it.

What more does any Joe fan want? That was always the dominant theme of the Joe team; continuing against all odds, finding a way to get the job done, out-thinking and out-working an enemy that's been given the advantage. G.I. Joe Origins #13 delivers a really old-school G.I. Joe comic feel, and that's a good thing. It helps that Ripcord's wisecracking in this book is almost certainly better than in his film incarnation. Lest you think it is all about the writing though, a word on the art; it's not outstanding, but it gets the job done. The inks, by Walden Wong, are particularly evocative in a series of night-in-the-jungle scenes. One slight problem is that, occasionally, some of the faces become a little too similar, so that when a group of soldiers are standing close together, it is slightly difficult to pick out who is who. This is a minor quibble, though, with what is otherwise a book any Joe fan (provided they're willing to accept the changes to Ripcord's background, which I am) should enjoy. It isn't breaking any new ground, but it is telling the first part of a solid military action story, G.I. Joe style.

COMIC REVIEW: A-Team Shotgun Wedding (IDW)

I have mixed feelings about the upcoming A-Team movie. I loved the show as a kid. Mr. T with his "I pity the fool" and Hannibal's "I love it when a plan comes together." I still want a van like theirs. But a movie? And a comic based on said movie? IDW has done such a thing.

In A-Team Shotgun Wedding, writer Tom Waltz and artist Stephen Mooney introduce us to the familiar characters on a mission in the Bering Strait. Mooney draws the team as their current incarnation, with broad strokes of Liam Neeson, Rampage Jackson, and Bradley Cooper. (Even so, when I was reading B.A.'s lines, Mr. T's voice was in my head.) The story was what I would expect from an episode of the show: a little action, a lot of snark, and good guys winning. I'm interested to see how this story goes and how or if it ties into the film.

If you can't wait for the movie, or if you're nostalgic for the old show, this will tide you over. I don't know if it would hold anyone's interest outside of that.
